I think people have some sort of inherent knowledge in rhythm sense (especially when sightreading a map), but doesn’t know how and why understanding it helps in difficult maps. Good episode peepoSit

I think a good way to explain how repeating similar patterns help is *priming* . The fast pattern processing in your brain is built on association. Imagine it like a huge network of patterns where similar/associated ones are connected. If you see the first pattern then that pattern, and also rotated or more spaced versions of it, get activated in memory for quick recall. That way you can read the pattern much more easily when it shows up later in the map. All of this happens automatically (not just in osu, but in every facet of your life, I recommend "Thinking - Fast and Slow" if you want more info), but consciously thinking about it will make it even stronger. I imagine learning music theory also helps by organizing your memory network according to groups of 4.

Oh so it’s normal. My strategy for maps that I couldn’t acc well was to set the tempo of the song in my head or even say 1, 2, 3, 4 out loud in order to keep on the timing. Thanks for the video! At least now I know that my strategies aren’t rubbish.

I am confused about whether I am more confused after watching the video than before. Music theory is theoretically so simple at a basic level at least, yet my brain says, "Fuck you, I don't care!" and as a result, it always confuses me a lot. I keep the information of this video in the back of my head, and maybe one day it will help, but for now, I feel more confused. Thus I will just "ignore" it because I am sure it will mindblock me.

I think it would be interesting to do a survey of people's rank and if they play an instrument or not and see if playing an instrument correlates to a higher rank in the game. Not only because of things like general finger dexterity and stuff like that but also because of music theory knowledge and rhythm sense.
