That ending was such a rollercoaster. From the defeatism after counting cards, to realizing they counted wrong and they would win, to losing by cubes after they were SURE nothing could stop them. The shocked reactions to the Game Lost screen were wild. What a ride.

I've never seen you all so shocked at an ending. It was perfect. I was watching cubes all game and once everyone got confident, I couldn't stop panicking. XD good game though. Was fantastic.

If Adam hadn't moved Blair she was on Atlanta. She could have cured blue first, taken the cubes off of Atlanta. Flown to San Paulo and then moved down to meet Sully. Then sully would have had to take the yellow card from Blair and moved into San Paulo and cured yellow. Adam got too ability happy and just started moving people without paying attention to what he was really doing. Great game though.

Normally, indecision in board games merely results in analysis paralysis. But 39:15 shows us what what happens when a board game simulates indecision in the actual high-cost manner that is common to the real world. Sullivan knew this. And he taught us a valuable lesson here today.

This is what I love about Pandemic. You think you have it nailed and the game punches you in the throat. It's fun but at times it's brutal. From elation to heartbreaking in the turn of a card. I love it

They only played 4 epidemics though - I'd be interested to see if the set of roles they played with would beat a 6 epidemic game, even with very good players

@@CaptLoquaLacon If the deck is merciful to the contingency planner, maaaybe? Double dipping on events can be powerful but they need to line up well. Also you'd need the researcher to ignore all cubes and laserfocus on gathering cards for the cure from turn 1.

One of the things I’m looking forward to about lockdowns being lifted soon in the U.K. (pray I don’t jinx it) is that soon Board Game Club might be able to just stop showing us how much fun board gaming can be even under the constraints of lockdown, and will just be able to show us how much fun board gaming can be.

I think the mistake was to not get rid of red when there was just 2 places with it, that will give you a whole lot of problems later and with 2 gone you can focus on just half the world instead. Pandemic is a pretty hard game because it tends to give you some nasty surprises just when you think it is over and you have won. I don't think I seen any player skip half their turn though, I am not sure what they were thinking and I was screaming at my screen when everybody agreed Blair should just skip.

It's pretty great! When we played, it ended up being surprisingly emotional; the permanent mechanics such as named characters that can get scars/meet their ends and the lasting city changes got us surprisingly invested! My favorite character was my Medic, Rafael, who earned some abilities and relationships but whom I was *terrified* of getting into harm's way after his first scar.

*SPOILERS* On the last round of turns, if adam hadn't zipped Blair to South America, on her turn she could have Cured in Atlanta, treated in Atlanta, flown to the research center in South America, and moved beside Sully. That would have gotten added the 1 extra blue cube needed and Sully could take the Yellow cards and cure on his turn. ...I think.

I feel like they did more harm earlier - Adam discarded the Miami card when Sully was near it. The thing I've found with Pandemic is that you need to commit early to someone curing a colour, I don't think they did until people had 3 cards, but by that point it can be a bit late in proceedings. If they had made more of a move on yellow, they may have had a few players freed up to firefight in the later rounds

That would have been better for sure. But Adam had Sao Paolo and could have used himself as the airlift to Sao Paolo and then pulled Sully with him. That leaves Blair in North America with 3 actions after curing so she could have pulled four blue cubes on her turn between Atlanta and Washington. John had blue cards as well and could have pulled four more blue on his turn getting it to Sully.

I would love to see you guys play some Resistance: Avalon. Don’t get me wrong, I love the BotC episodes, but the myriad complexities of it can get a bit overwhelming, whereas Avalon/Resistance is really just all about the “Are you evil?” For this reason, I insist that both Brooke and Sully participate.

Yeah, I wondered what Adam was on about until he corrected himself - the contingency planner does rather suck if the events don't get dealt out and played early, and in the normal base game there are only 5 events, rather than the 2 per player that was introduced by On The Brink. The poor cyan doofus can be really underwhelming in the base game

Spoiler for the end: Blair should’ve flew to San Francisco and gotten three cubes for the reserve…but there is still potential of more blues being infected. So you still could’ve lost. Great episode guys! My favorite so far!

They should have played forecast, they should have tried to set up Sully to cure yellow sooner, Sully shouldn't have done the mad border hopping... There are lots of little points where you think they could have done better!

Ops expert one of the worst?! My go-to role every time - special action fly to a 3 cuber, drop a research station, cure 2 - rinse and repeat - board rarely in danger, is super connected for everyone else and late game good for trades and dropping stations for cures. Easily top tier alongside medic and scientist. Also - love your channel - discovered it last week and have been working through it all - top notch stuff edit: just watched a little further - turns out you got the role mixed with contingency planner - total agreement - utter garbage role

Pandemic, to me, is a great example of how themeing is important in board games. I didn't care about Pandemic at all until Reign of Cthulhu, then I bought it. Logically I know it's more or less the same game but the theme just appealed to me so much more.

Pandemic is truly a brutal game! Tense episode, great fun and I hope you do another! I for one, greatly enjoy Adam's pick of three core members here. These four would honestly find a way to be entertaining reading the tax registry. And of course poor Sully gets stuck with the contingency planner! x) At least in this game the contingency planner had a few moments of usefulness, so it wasn't a total waste.

Never played Pandemic, and 20 minutes in so far. I could imagine this game having a social deduction mechanic, where one guy is secretly a saboteur who wants to watch the world burn and he keeps giving really bad ideas and the team have to a) save the world and b) figure out who the saboteur is so they can counteract them and save the world

@Marc - it almost does: the excellent expansion 'On The Brink' has a Bio-Terrorist scenario which pits the team against the viruses AND an extra hidden player roaming the board dropping a 5th virus strain.

Typically you want the first epidemic card to come out early on, as you have at least 9 city cards already out (following setup), this dilutes the risk of being hit with city card with three disease cubes on it, and also the longer it takes for the first epidemic card to make its appearance, the increased likelihood of having two epidemic cards come out in quick succession.
