As a game it has some interesting parts, but essentially it's just an Orky Gaslands. I can see people buying this for the vehicles more so than the game. I think Gaslands is still a better driving game. Good battle report. You showed what the game is and it's nice to see if it is worth the investment. Great job guys.

I purchased this boxed game the other day after watching this video and reading these comments. First I should confess that, due to strangely fortunate circumstances, I was able to buy Speed Freeks for very little cash out of pocket. However, I had already been strongly leaning toward purchasing this box instead of investing in Gaslands. My rationale is that this box is a complete package: models, rules, game boards, terrain, dice, markers, templates and other stuff. Gaslands seems extremely cheap at first, given that the rulebook is ~$13 USD street price and brand new Hot Wheels cars are only $1-$4 each. But when I started looking into what it would take to get "same or better" build quality and detail with respect to boards, dice, templates, terrain, and mods/bitz, it starts to add up. In no way am I making the claim that Gaslands' "all in" price is more than that of Speed Freeks, but I contend that it's closer than it seems at first blush. Sure, some of us may already be sitting on a mountain of bitz, terrain and hobby tools, which would greatly decrease Gaslands' entry price, but that's a fundamentally different comparison. Anyway, I didn't price out this comparison to the cent (or even to the dollar), but I figure whatever excess Speed Freeks has cost me is the premium I'm paying for a) convenience and b) brand (Orks are so fun and funny!). I'm okay with that.

Looks like a good time, but the price point is way off. Only 40k Ork players that are planning to transfer the models over into their armies are going to want this. $150 for a board game is crazy, especially for what little there is here in the box for casual board-gamers. Seems like a missed opportunity to get people that don't actually play 40k into a cool, themed board game.

I agree entirely. I preordered because I'm an Ork player and a board gamer wanting to get my friends into 40k. This video showed me it is the right game to try and get my friends interested but none of them are going to buy it since it's overpriced to buggery. Gorkamorka was a much better deal. Two warbands and terrain for 150 instead of 250 (talking Australia dollars)

Setting aside the models, that's a pretty nice mat. Most good mats run you 75 dollars, and the cheapest are 30 dollars. This is a pretty good mat for something to play regular 40k at home when you can't make it to your local game store.

Since Gaslands is inspired by and borrows from GWs old Dark Future, I think it's the other way around. The author even mentions Dark Future in the Gaslands credits.

Which is itself a variant of GW Battle Cars which is in itself a GW rip off of the original Car Wars.

Car Wars used a turning key and Battlecars turned to the map gird. The key standout in Gaslands that was borrowed from Dark Future was the turn/maneuver templates, not that it was car combat.

I think the little game mode is fun, if you are an existing Ork player this box is probably not worth it as you probably have enough choppa's by now however I think if you are new to Orks this is a great jump off point! Gaslands knock-off or not it really shows what dem boyz are all about and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience!

Paul Gibbons The minis are at least useful in 40k, unlike titanicus, you can also play this on a regular 40k board so I think this is a pretty cool minigame style thing for people who already own ork armies

It is no Gorkamorka. In fact it is just some kind of the gorkamorka movement rules + something = that's the game. Gorkamorka was a fun game and as with every side-games from GW, nobody is ever really missing them for long. The reason for this is that the players still have other games to play OR keep on playing the unsupported games but society in general simply never gets informed about it. I mean for real, are you always letting the whole world know that you play gorkamorka, mordheim, gothic or whatever right now!?! I don't think so! So it is easy to say that nobody is missing a game when nobody is writing about it. By the way, gorkamorka did not really needed much support, it was a campaign game and thus long-term enjoyment. A game I missed a lot for instance when it went out of the GW stores was Battlefleet gothic. But sadly it was said to be too boring, what in fact was just the official saying for: the movement phase demanded too much tactical intelligence.

It's par for the course for them. To be fair it's not the first ( or last ? ) time they've had a stab at monetising the whole Max Max genre. Battle cars in 83 was the first attempt - a streamlined and board game version of Car Wars ( both of which I used to love ), and then another attempt with the much more miniature based Dark Future in.. 87 ? You could argue Gorka Morka was a half stab at a 40k version of the same thing. And now this. Gorka Morka lite, vehicles only ! Depending how you're counting this would be their fourth Max Max iteration.

For a start, price wise, Gaslands is 10 times cheaper. It means nothing in terms of gaming, but it remains an important point. As far as the game itself is concerned, Gaslands allows you complete custom teams, with about 10 types of vehicles to choose from, and half a dozen sponsor. Loads of weapons and special equipment are available as well. Not only cars and buggies, but also more "exotic" vehicles: Wanna field 15 kamikaze bikes? Go ahead. Wanna field a tank, a bus and a helicopter? Right this way. Then, and although I haven't played speek freeks, it seems to me that gasland feels faster: vehicles cover more distance during a turn, and the faster you go, the less maneuverable your car becomes, which doesn't seem to be the case in SF (yea if you fail your roll, your car spins, but that doesn't scratch the "spectacular crash" itch the way gaslands does). All in all I guess it's not targeted at the same audience, and I know which of the 2 I'm more drawn to.

@@ReverendRift I'm kind of a tabletop wargaming noob, and I'd never heard of a driving/mad max/demolition derby type game before but it sounds like a blast to play. I watched this video because I was so intrigued after hearing about Speed Freeks but I'm so glad I read your comments because now I'm looking into Gaslands. I'm not much of a hobbyist...is it tough to kitbash some Matchbox cars for the purposes of the game? Do you DIY all the obstacles for Gaslands? I'm so curious about this now. Thanks very much for chiming and for your help!

Not necessarily, there is a Gaslands group on Facebook with tons of tips and inspiration, and Ash has a couple of batreps on the channel, so you can have a look for yourself. But I know some people play just using matchbox cars straight out of the box, without modding or painting them. And as far as obstacles go, you don't need many of them. I mainly use rocks (styrofoam, tree bark, or straight up real rocks from the garden), and piles of tires from cars I cannibalized for parts.

You’d be amazed how unpopular fixed camera is. I’ve used it in the past for certain games and it’s only really the preferred format of the precision measuring crew. Honestly it’s far easier to film so I’d be happy to, but it definitely isn’t what the majority of folks want to watch!
