I never had enough time to play Shogun 2 when I had Steam. But when I did play, it was always as the Chosokabe. I lived in Kochi Prefecture (formerly Tosa Province) for 4 years as an English ALT on the JET Program, so the people of that region-along with the history of the farmer samurai of the Chosokabe- have a special place in my heart.

I know this is 4 years old but I just started playing Chosokabe. I love MrSmartDonkey and his videos and I will, no doubt, watch them all. I learn a lot from him with each one. As any wargame is like a game of chess, there are many ways to approach each problem that is laid before you. Below I've laid out one such strategy for castle defense. ( My gut tells me it will be easy to gain rank for my archers so I must not depend on them too much. Otherwise my infantry will be weak and unable to defend them against other, more melee oriented clans whose infantry will be ranked higher.) Once I know where his army is, I place everyone where the inside of the front wall is just in range of my archers. My ashigaru go right in front of them. Samurai retainers positioned next to them on the side away from the enemy archers. As we are out of range of the enemys' archers, the AI will begin climbing the walls with whichever unit gets there first. If the archers get there first (ideal) I send in all of the infantry, placing the retainers on the flag. My infantry kills the archers and then I pick off their infantry with my archers and infantry as they climb over the wall. If he sends in his ashigaru first, I kill them with my archers as they climb over the walls and take what damage I must to route them with my infantry, (my moving my archers forward to engage their archers) then pull back, out of range, until their archers climb the walls and then it's rinse and repeat only on their archers this time. Just a suggestion you guys might want to try. I always like to cause damage with my archers but hate the, often times, needless damage caused by enemy archers.

They aren't bags they're a form of defense when you're being chased down by Calvary with bows the air mixed with the parachute type thing on their backs deflect arrows

The daikyu samurai have a way lower upkeep cost than the warrior monks, and their arrows do hit harder, however they shoot slower than the bow warrior monks. Also, the daikyu samurai are not made of glass like the warrior monks with far better armor and melee stats. They are both awesome units, but you should build daikyu samurai when playing Chosokabe because of the difference in upkeep cost alone, its like 250 versus 165 or something. Matters a lot when you have multiple armies with like 8 each of these guys. Also shooting slower but harder means your ammunition lasts longer. Personally, I never make bow warrior monks anymore because they just die and are so expensive. I am all about my rice based economy.

So I know this is old as shit, but the Chosokabe island is named Shikoku. The main island is called Honshu, and the northern one that isn't part of the base campaign map is called Hokkaido.

Man any time I try to do this campaign the Miyoshi declare war as soon as I move to take Iyo which means by the time I can get back they've got a bunch of troops on my doorstep, and then the other clan on the island piles on. The AI is so much nicer to you.

On Legendary they're very expensive for an early game unit, and they're by far the worst Samurai unit in the game, I rate them lower as Yari Ashigaru. In fact they are one of the worst units in the game whereas Yari Ashigaru are in my opinion the best unit in the game (not counting DLC units).

Sorry, I know this is 6 years old now but at 24:16 you said that your archers are better. Is this true even on legendary difficulty? I thought enemy units get buffed so aren't their archers better at this difficulty.

they completely changed AI so now you get always attacked at turn 2 by Iyo army and around turn 4/5 by Awa from woods

I end up not using the Daikyu Samurai units though, so if that's what you were hoping for it'll sadly be disappointing. The army composition ends up having 10 bow units though, so hopefully that'll make up for it.

Seriously... I was playing on hard and damn the neibough which looked like neutral nation to me . DECLEARED WAR ON ME Then. The 2 enemies worked together and bring 2 armies and one of the them encirclementing me... Couldn't do anything gg no re. Hard> Legendary? Coz I didn't even anger them or anything. Just randomly decleared war on me. I hadn't even taken a province and the war declerastion came right after I killed the rebels ??? Weird game. Jk. Started playing more again... Nothing else to do lol. Good information. Many new things to learn and enhance :P

I'm sorry, sometimes I'm not in the best of moods when I answer questions and when it feels like a silly question to me I give a silly answer. No offense was meant to the person in question. I'm usually pretty clear with my titles and descriptions, if I'm using a mod, it'll say it in both, on top of that, you can very easily tell if Darthmod is being used from the footage, Darthmod units have very distinct unit colours, and things of that nature. All in all, it's a question to which the answer is easily found without having to ask, which I consider laziness, and a lazy question deserves a lazy answer.

I heard late campaign can be a disaster and my major units are the Samurai Archers, Yari and Naginata Samurai, and Naginata and Bow cavalry. At war with the Shimazu clan who has taken their starting Island and all Mori lands. I havent faced any of their armies yet but I've taken their first 2 provinces lol. I wonder how I will fair against those Katanas but I suspect my archers will rip them up.

MrSmartDonkeyLP legendoftotalwar did a series like it in medieval 2. From what I could remember, he would exterminate all conquered settlements, raise taxes to the maximum, execute all captives after every battle, etc.

No mods in this campaign, some of my more recent Let's Plays do use mods, usually just visual ones or a camera mod, but I didn't use any yet in this campaign.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Awesome, I'll catch your whole playlist in this campaign. I'm just getting torn apart after realm divide no matter what faction I play. After maxing every farm, sake den, ect I still cannot afford doom stacks and cannot withstand the stacks marching at me. I've tried abandoning provinces and re-attacking them to kill single stacks at a time, but not making much headway to capture more provinces in time limit. I'll watch how you do it. The drinking companion retainer honestly isn't all that bad. Sure it's -1 morale but it's nothing compared to that -5% bonus against assassinations, which, when you end up having to go up against all those ninja and geisha agents in the mainland, it would be a great help, especially if you get more retainers in the future which stack up on that.

I find that I get maybe 1 general assassinated every 3 campaigns, it very rarely ever happens, and that’s playing on legendary. As long as you use your agents to remove enemy agents it never really becomes a problem. Also I don’t think I’ve ever seen an enemy geisha in the 2000+ hours I have in the game, I finish my campaigns way before anyone gets the chance to recruit them.

Check upkeep costs or the fact that I can’t save my campaign. Fuck I hate when people comment shit like this, just because you suck and can’t finish a campaign on Legendary difficulty doesn’t mean that I’m cheating the system. I have done a few dozen Legendary difficulty campaigns, normal campaigns, challenge campaigns, etc. if you choose to believe that I’m going as far as to “cleverly” edit the videos you might want to take off your tin-foil hat. Again, check upkeep costs, they’re the clearest indication of Legendary difficulty. I also have many of my Legendary save files on my PC so if you really want to see I’ll send you some. Lastly it always tells you when a major clan dies and any smaller clans that you’ve met, it doesn’t tell me about clans I never met either. Do some research before accusing me of shit.
