@@shannonrussell898 This is the first time i've ever heard of a band named crowed house. i've never heard any of the songs they've talked about. but i sure as hell remember Vanilla Ice, his song being used for TV ad's, and his lawsuit. I also just went around and asked my coworkers if they've ever heard of crowded house, and most of them went "was that some kind of old tv sitcom?" and one person knew them, sorta. Blair was completely right. Gandalf is perhaps more wise, but he has vast knowledge of basically everything, especially because of his wide travel. Sam is a perfect example of wisdom over intelligence, he might not know about much outside of the Shire, but he is certainly wise, for instance towards the end when they are in Mordor he says to Frodo, “But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.” I mean just look up any list of his quotes and there may not be deep knowledge about Ents and their ways, but there is certainly wisdom. I would say that on the other side is Saruman, he is supremely intelligent, creating things that are just about never seen in any of the other kingdoms of Middle Earth, Isengard is almost in its own technological era, but as Treebeard says about him, "He has a mind of metal and wheels, and cares little for living things." Many misinterpret this as Tolkien just hating on modern technology, a trait of CS Lewis falsely ascribed to him by many, but really what it shows is Saruman's lack of wisdom, wisdom to tell what is right, wisdom not to use the Palantir, to not be so egotistical as to think he could wield the one ring. Also as a side note, while DnD was based on LOTR, it was created after and has moved away from it into a more general system not explicitly based of off one thing, so DnD stats aren't really relevant.
@RileyBruh Жыл бұрын
100% agree with Blair's assessment of Gandalf vis a vis wise-intelligent but her referencing Sam's name as a factor in why she considereded him full wise... Sam is a modifier of wise, meaning half. His name means "half wise" or "half wit" because he was thought of as a very simple person. not saying he isn't wise in actuality but his name quite literally means the opposite 🥲

I don't know whether there was just confusion about what is actually on Woodface, and obviously a lot depends on what country you're listening from. Sam is quintessentially wise, in that he has a lot of emotional intelligence but is as dumb as a box of cat piss. Sheldon would be all the way in the right, for example, and then all the way on the left you have your Peter Sellers from Being There. Sam is just a notch or two below that. As an Australian, re Crowded House, in Australia and NZ they would absolutely be a large degree to the right. UK and US you can argue the other way, iirc Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong are their only songs that actually did really well in both the US and UK. Those two hits were both off their debut album and were about as far as they ever truly got chart wise in the US..On the flip side, over 30-40 years they have had 12 songs in the UK top 40, and have a healthy touring calendar in Australia, NZ and the UK in particular (I think they have something like two weeks of dates including Isle of Wight festival this year booked just for UK and ireland dates). The dichotomy of this question is kinda off for that band though, because one hit wonder kinda implies they did one big song and then disappeared. If you take out the US market (where they still had two big singles), they easily had an album's worth of material that a large number of people contemporary to when the various eras were released would recognise, and are definitely pop icons in their countries of origin. They probably weren't a good clue for that reason.

@@ishoottheyscore8970 to be fair I would have totally gone to bat for Lynyrd Skynyrd as well, but it's an admittedly tougher sell. Even aside from Sweet Home and Free Bird they've done some bangers

@@JonGracey69 That's the unfortunate thing about the tag "One Hit Wonders", it tends to invoke sentiments about novelty acts which makes people want to defend people who pick up the tag, but for me, a lot of very good niche acts probably do fit that label to some degree. I'm a fan of Soul Asylum who really only had Runaway Train as far as the UK charts are concerned, but had some wonderful (and odd) tracks that showed off their talents. String Of Pearls, Cartoon, Misery, Without a Trace... Curious what other ones you'd have raised for Skynyrd, I've done Simple Man and Gimme Three Steps at karaoke, but calling them hits is maybe stretching it. Heck, most of what I listen to, it'd be a stretch to describe them as having a hit! I don't see 65daysofstatic bothering the charts any time soon (even though Taipei is just a gorgeous bit of music...) Now I'm wondering if there is a version of Wavelength where you have to name a few items along the spectrum and your team would have to place them in order and you get more points for the more items you list (so you could easily do 3 for example, but how about trying to do 6 or 7?)

@@ishoottheyscore8970 For Skynyrd I would back anything off Second Helping, but it's totally fair to say they're not hits in the same way as their big ones are. And you're totally right about Soul Asylum from a UK perspective - Runaway Train was big but I'd be hard pressed to sing you another of theirs. And I'm loving your Wavelength / Timeline mash-up! Great idea!

When Tom asked John about his ideal mouthfeel, I was definitely expecting someone to say "adult Nala from Lion King".

10:33 That's dead on what I was thinking and I love it. Edit: Shame it didn't go that way XD But I get the line of thinking, Gandalf is intelligent AND wise, whereas someone like Yoda is wise but not necessarily as intelligent (from what we see), and someone like say...Scottie from Star Trek is very intelligent but not necessarily as wise. Also man, I feel like Jon was killing the A Team lol

Funnily enough, Blair, Samwise the name supposedly means roughly "half-wise". So his name is actually "halfwit".

48:30 I would not have been able to resist "Marmite" as my clue for this. An absolutely worthless clue unless you happen to have heard me talk about it but I simply would not have been able to resist.
