Of course beating your child isn't always necessary, but there are some kids wholl just ignore your words. that's where the punishment comes into play (especially in young kids). Do X and Y will make me feel pain, don't do X. Then when it's possible explain why they shouldn't do X in the first place. Also, I'm saying this as someone who was never beaten as a child (because I generally did what I was told), but off of pure common sense and psychology.
