I wish you were in Ohio! We're looking to replace an original (30+ years old) wood french door with a sliding patio door for the reasons you explained so well in this video. The door is solid, well-made and presents no problems, other than the inconvenience of it impeding furniture placement and easy access exiting or entering. My major concerns are the many problems that often arise with the workmanship involvement with replacement of an existing door. Horror stories abound in reviews about poor installation, leaking, poor seals, foggy windows, complicated warranties, and unscrupulous pricing - to name a few! Makes a homeowner think twice about replacing a good -- but somewhat inconvenient product -- only to run into unanticipated installation, warranty and product failures (like so MANY problems identified in online reviews). Many thanks for your You Tube videos that empower us with KNOWLEDGE of the product and the process of buying windows and doors! I agree with you that KNOWLEDGE is power when it comes to home improvement projects!

@HoustonWindowExperts6 ай бұрын
The track height will be dictated by the flooring height and how much overhang you have on your patio. If you do not have much of an overhang, you will want a higher threshold to prevent water from coming inside.

Great video. You are the tops! I'm looking to substitute my old sliding door (one fixed and one sliding panel) but I need one with a low effort to open or close. Do you happen to know the maximum effort allowed by codes or average in the industry? I have an older person living with us and she can't do a lot of effort to open one. My neighbor has one that needs considerable effort and even I have a problem. He has no idea of what effort has to be exerted. This would be very useful to add to your videos and would surprise others that have older relatives or disabled family members. Any particular brand for budget limited persons?

Can you recommend a patio door with a low threshold or flush. We had a NT patio door put in and the threshold is a tripping hazard waiting to happen. Our old patio door the threshold was flush and we needed that because our as you pass thru the patio door there is a small step down to our garden room. We need to find a solution either it being us buying a new patio door, this door is only 2 months old or some time of ADA solution that allows us to step on the threshold without the guide for the door sticking up and making stepping on the threshold uncomfortable. Our sales man says he doesn't know of any doors that have low or flush threshold, quite disappointed with him right now. Any help you can suggest will be appreciated.
@HoustonWindowExperts2 жыл бұрын
NT doesn't actually make their own sliding door. It's made by another manufacturer for them. I've never seen the door something can't say whether or not it's higher than a typical door. Can you go to a few showrooms and compare it to what they have? You might also consider a transition board that would slope upwards to the threshold to reduce the chance if tripping. I'm guessing you probably have a tile floor. Tile is much thinner than wood. It could be that their door was designed primarily for wood flooring. All the best, Jeff

The fiberglass product would be the best between those two. However, I usually do not make a door four panels wide until it gets past 15 ft in width. A four panel door in that size would have very narrow pass-throughs when you open one door. I think you'd be better off with a three panel door anytime you're not over 12 to 15 ft.

@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for the insight. That makes sense. But looking at the brochure, it looks like the widest slider Milgard offers in Ultra is 12’. They offer 16’ on the Trinsic.
@ratpinscher2 жыл бұрын
I do have room to go wider than 12’, but maybe the 3 panel is better

If all you need is 11 ft, doesn't that solve your problem?

What are your thoughts on fiberglass (Ultrex) and composite (Fibrex) sliding doors?
@HoustonWindowExperts3 жыл бұрын
Ultrex by Marvin and Impervia by Pella are great products and made from real fiberglass. Fibrex is not a fiberglass product. It is good but cannot be categorized in the same zip code as true fiberglass.

Thanks for the quick reply. How do these products hold up in a sliding door application? I was thinking along the lines of Marvin Essential and Andersen 100 Series sliding patio doors.
@HoustonWindowExperts3 жыл бұрын
The Marvin door is going to be much better. The Anderson door is very nice though.

What are your thoughts on the “folding doors” or even the newer “independent single panel sliding & swing open” doors? They’re in high demand in southern california & all claim to be reliable and efficient but would love to hear your thoughts or what to look for?
@HoustonWindowExperts4 жыл бұрын
Hi, we also offer those styles. Maybe I can make a video about that soon. I think they are great products.
@Snail_Nailz4 жыл бұрын
Houston Window Experts A video would be awesome- there’s a lot of new manufacturers concentrating on JUST the single pane version that allows multiple options (gaps between, some swung out with other still in place, etc). There’s anything from DIY only vendors to the more traditional white glove install so its crazy trying to figure out what points are important to consider. thanx for the lighting fast supply!

Houston Window Experts Since its such a new concept my regular window & door place wont touch um yet (they’re old school but extremely knowledgeable so I’ve been avoiding the option for client projects)

You lose a lot of glass with folding door systems, and usually end up with more panels.

@@shrekylou bi folds are nice for kitchen to outdoor living spaces where a pocket/multi slide isn’t realistic.

Yes, they all do.

Fleetwood sounds expensive as fuck!
@HoustonWindowExperts2 жыл бұрын
It's pretty expensive. They have had a lot of issues lately so we dropped them as a vendor. The quality is still there, but they are making a lot of shipping and production mistakes.
