this congressman said the most vile and disgusting things (on multiple occasions at their residence) to a 19 year old and a 20 year old, both interns at his place of work, who repeatedly say "no," and he thinks it counts as consentual because no one screamed and ran away or had him arrested on the spot? or is it because the bastard had him a tiny bit of power he could wield over these girls and thought he could get away with it? well, he did get away with it for awhile. his own colleagues investigated and found him guilty but did they expel him or even remove him from his committees? no, they did not...because...republicans.

I don’t know why it’s so hard to see how power dynamics affect the concept of “consent”. The average 19 year old is not going to be able to stand up to a 40ish year old year old man who she works for, when he wants to have “adult” interactions. Especially if she has been raised to not be assertive. If half of what I have read about this situation is accurate, this is not a new thing for him. How many drag queens or communists were involved?

The guy who resigned? He's 39 years old. He (allegedly) creeped on an intern who was 19. I dunno about y'all, but this isn't exactly a good look for the TN GOP. Saying "hey, she's an adult" is technically true, but come on. If you're twice the age of the person you're hitting on at work, then politics aside you need to check yourself.
@Marewig Жыл бұрын
I'm already creeped out by the idea of approaching someone 10 years younger (it would probably be less weird if I'm 50+, but that's not where I am). I can't imagine hitting someone half my age and thinking that it's fine and dandy. Add the workplace setting, and even more power imbalance stack up. That's just... nope.

"I do not argue with results" 200%. My dad is an intellectual and philosopher, but he also grew up poor with a union organizer dad and grandfather (Laborers - LiUNA) and ultimately ended up working as a safety coordinator at a chemical plant, then as a laborer in construction, and then spent a couple decades as the Secretary Treasurer and eventual President of his local laborers union hall. Linguistic register is important. Knowing your audience is crucial. Want a laborer to take you seriously on safety regarding chemicals they might be exposed to? You can't sugar coat how it'll affect them. I sat in on some of the safety classes my dad taught. With a degree in geology and chemistry and a wealth of knowledge of other sciences, he could have easily just thrown up a boring ass PowerPoint presentation for a few hours and made everyone fall asleep. But, my dad understood his audience. Instead, he'd say things like "Now, if a POS foreman tells you to go clean out a tank that had benzene in it without a fresh air line, you tell that foreman to go f**k himself until you get the proper PPE!" In an industry in which the law of physics can kill you in milliseconds, he also devoted a LOT of time to understanding those forces that are seemingly just incomprehensible until disaster strikes. Like, simply just understanding how liquids behave under extreme pressures and massive volumes. It's truly amazing just how dangerous large volumes of water under pressure can be. There was an incident at the old chemical plant after my dad had left in which several workers lost their lives and another suffered serious brain damage...all because someone up the line noticed a valve was shut off and rather than radio up and ask WHY it was off, he decided to just switch it back on. He didn't know that a team down the line had dug up the 3' diameter pipe in order to replace a section of it. "You can do everything right, but people can still die because one asshole just didn't get the memo." (lesson on SOPs and effective communication on jobsites)
@stevenserna910 Жыл бұрын
I agree Jesseart, you can't reach everyone the same way. "Lock-out, Tag-out" should have helped, if that was in their SOP. I'm a "Safety Guy" myself. The inherent difficulty is that; it's very hard to have people understand that sometimes you gotta; Do, or Not-Do things a certain way, or bad stuff happens. 1. You can be direct: "Don't do that, or you go BOOM!" 2. You can be forensic: Refer to 29cfr1910.blah, blah: "The temperature of the mixer/container SHALL NOT exceed 300°F, If this happens immediate death by immoliation shall occur. See item 12 table blah-blah C." 3. Or you can be flippant and nonchalant: "Uh yeah, if this stuff gets over 300°; you're gonna be covered in it and melt, sooo, you might wanna make sure to hit the "Bug-out switch." To be successful, you must know how to combine all 3 methods, so that each type of learner gets an idea of what the point is. You're always gonna get flak from the older employees, "I been doing this for 30 years and I'm still ok doin' it my way, uhh... someone hand me my finger." Beau is very good at using a relaxed, & forensic approach, to convey his ideas. Hats off to Beau.

I'm with you 100% on how important it is to speak the right way to the right group of people, especially around safety issues. Context: I payed my way through art school by working in a steel foundry. Being the smallest person on the midnight maintenance team, I quickly became their small spaces specialist, and you'd better believe that I took my safety and PPE *very* seriously there! Fast forward a few years to where I working in a prop shop for Broadway level theatre, and people were splashing around all sorts of solvents and toxic adhesives without masks or gloves, and even keeping an unlicensed drum of mineral spirits in the basement for the sake of convenience, with no safety training for anyone using it... I got everyone together over lunch one day for an impromptu meeting about my work history, what those chemicals they were using so flippantly would do to them, and how the entire block would go up if someone was stupid enough to spark a joint in the basement if that 50 gal. drum had the tiniest leak. My line was "You guys might not like living much, but I intend to stick around here for another 50 yrs or so, and I'd prefer if none of you turns this entire warehouse into a smoking crater." Safety practices improved greatly after that, and I got a very quiet raise.

I was starting to get jealous of all my trans and pregnant sisters out there, but now I can sleep soundly knowing I, too, am swept up in the wave! One of my friends received the same letter, so I'm sure others will as well. I am seriously considering putting out a call to all my perimenopausal sisters in TN and suggest we visit the Nashville legislature and drop our pants for them since they are so concerned with if we have the proper genitals for progesterone treatment. Now THAT would grab national headlines - having an army of women in their 40s and 50s flashing the TN legislature.

I like things at a slow pace, precise and well chosen language, and ideological soundness. Beau ticks all those boxes for me. Keep it up.

Shoots... I didn't recognize the name, but I have definitely already seen Drew's act, and it's fanfuckingtastic. Spot on. Absolutely NAILED it.

I saw a clip of a local tv news reporter confronting Campbell with a transcript of the ethics hearing. Campbell seemed really uncomfortable when the reporter pulled the transcript out and started reading from it and then asking him if the interns and the ethics panel was lying.

Thanks for the section on Drew Beau. There's a similar dynamic to that question going on in a part of the left I follow and that helped solidify my feelings around it into words. It can be easy to lose track of the forest for the trees and a prompt to refocus is invaluable in the quest to spread progressive ideas.

Hello Tom! I do remember seeing Dolly Parton like 20+ years ago - this was first time me seeing her, though I did hear name. Of course at the time Dolly the sheep was still popular.

Hi Jan ! Hope you're good. Lot of politicians out here - not a lot of ethics.

It's fair to say that the GOP and politicians in general have ethics issues.

@@tombrown4683 Just added 1 to my age. A bit depressed about this, since I feel like I need another 100 in my age to properly represent my tiredness. And ethical politicians were a rarity. I was lucky enough to know some, but it doesn't last long. Besides the system makes those with ethics - ex-politicians.
@jannegrey Жыл бұрын
@@comfortablynumb9342 True. Hard for it to be different when things are so stacked against people with ethics. And in GOP even vestigial spine can get you into trouble.

Dolly and Miley singing Jolene was a beautiful thing ❤ There's an old story about being observed by something akin to "eternity"... it's a caution to mind our behavior. A "well-placed" f-bomb can prove a powerful point, from time to time. I haven't had time to sit to compose my email to my Governor...
