I have only lived in Montana since the 1970's. I guess that makes me a Newcomer? I agreed to honor the Salish traditions of keeping Grandmother safe for 7 generations, and I told one of the Contemporary Elders that I would do all I can to enable that on our 20 acres. I attempt to influence the actions of the Settlers who keep filling up the Bitterroot Valley, about the limitations of Nature to provide water for the growing population of Montana. We have confronted Senators about the issue and they were mixed about the effects that development created. Daines seemed defensive, Tester appeared to understand the limitations of water to satisfy all the demands the developers intended. We will miss Tester, now that the Republicans have accomplished their Goal of installing a new Junior Senator in Congress. I am sure the Poor Little Rich Boy from Minnesota will solve all the issues.............Right?

As a Montanan, I've not had anything positive to say about my state since the residents voted against their own interest in 2016 and 2024. I, for one, am very proud of them! There must be a first step in any action taken.

The concept of having a responsibility to future generations is one we need to adopt. Because it's a traditional one that literally built civilization. It's the reason why Greek farmers planted olives. For context olives, don't bear fruit within the lifetime of whoever planted them. Those who do plant olives do so to benefit people who are not yet born from their labors. We need to readopt this mindset for the good of our species.

I can totally see the people in 1970s Montana writing this into their constitution. I lived in Colorado back then and we felt the same way. We were FIERCE about keeping Colorado clean. We felt it incumbent on every one of us to pick up trash we found in the mountains and to shame those who tossed it. We fought for cleaner air and water, and won in Denver with laws that limited emissions from factories and the largest single polluter in the city, which was the coal-burning power plant. I remember the heavy smog in Denver in the late 70s. I moved away in 1980, and went back for a visit in '84 and Denver's air was almost clear compared to how it had been. I wish that sentiment of feeling individual responsibilty for keeping our environment clean had lasted. We were trying back then. But... profits uber alles. sigh
