Deucalion's accent is weird because he's played by Gideon Emery, it's a South African (English edition) accent with British overtop - iirc Emery lived here for a large part of his childhood, so his accent is wonky. (still haven't watched the show, but now I might, because Gideon Emery's goddamn voice has captivated me since Dragon Age 2 came out 😂)

Re: the criticisms you got on the 1st video. I think some people hear about camp and immediately think it means something sucks? But I think they don't understand camp or how people can genuinely enjoy it FOR being campy. Since camp is an ironic style there's an inherent internal tension that invites the viewer to laugh alongside the show. (And the disappearing camp is a large part of why my enjoyment of the show diminished in season 3.) So they think if you're pointing out the silliness it means you're just a jaded adult being unfair to a teen show. At least that's the way some of the anti-criticism comes off. I was shortly in the TW fandom when season 1-3A aired. I was a young adult at the time, mostly talking about the show with other 20-27 year olds, and the camp was the biggest draw for most of us young queer adults! That and the promise of queer characters which we didn't experience a lot in the teen media when we were growing up. So it was refreshing to have a (seemingly) queer-positive show. Not gonna get into the Teen Choice Awards clip, because I cringe so hard just thinking about it, but some of us got our hopes up that we were finally getting something that had been denied us in our formative years: main characters in a hit show being queer. Anyway. Going back to your first video. For the record, I don't think you were saying that anyone is wrong for enjoying TW. To me the recaps (I watched the show recaps first) had a very light touch in terms of criticism! You mostly pointed out that the show tackled big socially charged topics without making space for the emotional charge that they hold. Which is more than fair! And I really appreciated how you brought up Kali's visual treatment (the bare feet thing) because it was a BIG deal in my adult corner of the fandom. People were angry at Jeff for doing that to the only female character of colour. So yeah, I 100% agree that there's nothing wrong with engaging seriously with unserious media! Otherwise we could never talk about any comedy or kid's show. Which is ridiculous because there's a whole specialization in literature and media that's concerned with how to make good media for kids: how to approach serious topics based on the age group, what language to use, how the brain develops, how to introduce new ideas or words to expand their understanding, etc. Just because those cardboard picture books end up with the corners chewed off by toddlers doesn't mean the entire field shouldn't exist.

Ok, actually commenting on this video now. 😅 I think another way the movie undercuts traditional masculinity is how their team is called the Beavers? Not to be crass, but that had to be deliberate, no? TW the tv show being inspired by the animated series makes so much more sense in retrospect! It also explains why the first 2 seasons were so much more campy and cartoonish. Stiles really feels like he could be a cartoon, but that's in large part to Dylan O'Brien's acting, so maybe that skews my impressions. Given that in an animated morning cartoon the characters don't really change as you pointed out, it might have carried over into Scott's characterization in the MTV show. At least with how he's written in the first 2 seasons. His priorities--to his own detriment, and sometimes with people's lives in the balance--are always Allison and their relationship. That feels a lot more like a cartoon character's 1 defining trait, than it does a teen show's protagonist. You may already know this, but there's another repurposed hearse that chronologically falls right between the TW cartoon and Degrassi's season 10. It's in 6 Feet Under where Claire's family owns and runs a funeral parlour. I think Degrassi's writers were probably more familiar with that show since it was a huge hit. It was written by Alan Ball right after his American Beauty success. (Though it is funnier to think they borrowed it from the TW cartoon).

I think it makes sense if Scott's character improves after he's no longer paired with Allison. I didn't watch the show past 3A, but your explanation made sense to me. Also, I find it a little hilarious that people object to ships based on real life morals like age gaps or one tried to kill the other. It's fiction. It's not didactic! Where else are people supposed to explore dark or unconventional themes? Fiction is the safest and healthiest place to try those things. I'm also very tired of cops. So many cop shows on tv! And I get that there's an intrinsic narrative structure to solving a mystery or crime, but the teens solved whodunits on their own in the earlier seasons with only limited participation from the Sheriff, so it sucks to hear that TW got bloated with cops in the end. Bleh.

When season 2 first aired, I remember being so excited to see Michael Hogan show up. I’d loved him in the Battlestar Galactica reboot: another show with some very campy aspects thrown haphazardly into very serious topics. Honestly, “his username is Allison. His password is also Allison” is an absolute classic moment of camp. I remember people changing their tumblr’s title to that line because of how hilarious it was. For all that Scott wasn’t a compelling character, he gave use some amazing moments!

I think a lot of straight women that ship M/M it is about the equality of the ship. Later in life I did find out I was a transmasc person, but I've never been into the whole... self-insert. On that side note: There's a loooot of fanfics making one of the male characters hyper feminine, especially omegaverse fanfics, like why. Nothing wrong with hyper feminity, but why ship them at all then, when changing the base of the character. But ye, having two single males on a show, that has no love interest, that have great chemistry together and are pretty? Recipe for shipping.

Okay, so i watched the video and need to add somethings that i just want to. 1)Kabir was hurting more emotionally while fighting saurabh-khalid knowing that his khalid was dead than when the supposed heroine died. Hrithik is an amazing actor, so we know that was intentional. I also know that it was the big finale but there was more hurt than explosive anger radiating from him while he fought saurabh. 2)Kabir explicitly destroys saurabh-khalid's face telling him that "he didn't deserve that face" as he proceeded to do so. So no, whatever he was feeling was only for khalid and not saurabh. 3)Khalid was there only for the first 50 minutes of the film but he was still able to identify the fake Khalid (i will completely ignore the fact that kabir's a RAW agent with above avg iq, cause why not) 4)Saurabh's crazy villain persona kinda just radiated the "he's dead but you still want him while I'm left in the dust" or "i love fighting with you" cynical obsessive love interest vibe? Idk that's purely my perspective. Batman-Joker stuff?

Oh my god this video hit deep. I was one of the people who shipped Andrew and Jesse HARD, one of those who found solace in their enigmatic friendship. You made me tear up a little at that ending. It brought back so many memories of being that awkward, nerdy, internet - obsessed kid who thought they were so cool. I'd still love to think that apart of me will always that kid. Always.

I definitely think you're onto something during your riffing about the appeal of a ship where neither character has a body like the reader's. Especially when dealing with gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia (or before someone realizes that's what those feelings were). It can come as a relief to read about characters and be entirely in that fictional world and ignore the physical for a while.

This is a great video and analysis. I watched it all the way through without having sought it out in the first place. The only other dimension I would add is that in the beginning when the powers that be switched from playfully teasing at the ship textually and outside of the show from actively avoiding scenarios that might be determined ship material going forward was out of pure desire to avoid having a ship like this overpower the actual narrative of the show. Alas, seeing as they didn't even stick with that approach, they did a pretty bad job, or gave up on it after a season or two completely. Again, love the video! Very compelling.

I love your videos. To me they are on the same level as Jenny Nicholson's videos. I have some video essays that I like to re-watch and your 13 reasons why videos are on it as well as Jenny Nicholson's Vampire Diaries video. The first and second videos in this series seem a lot more fun and escapism and this video feels a lot more thesis, especially at the beginning. I love that as well, but it felt like a big switch from what I expected. I love learning about facts and hearing you talk about the show in a deeper sense. But I also really love listening to you and other creators talk about their opinions of the show and what they liked and didn't like. ❤ When you said you were only going to discuss one non-canon ship I got sad, because I thought you meant Sterek and that means that you wouldn't be talking about Thiam. But then you started talking about Thiam and saving Sterek for its own video. 🎉 The first time I watched Teen Wolf season 6b wasn't out yet and I thought it was completed at 6a. So when I re-watched I for the first time and realized there were new episodes I hadn't watched I was really excited. And I also immediately loved Thiam. The elevator scene is basically them confessing their feelings for each other after constantly bickering and defending each other. The hot and cold of "I don't trust you, but I will protect you" is so good. My second favourite scene of theirs is when they have to make it seem like they're with a big group and Theo just pushes Liam and gets him angry. And then after Nolan and co. leave they argue about the fight and Theo says "You broke my nose two times, it healed and then you broke it again." And Liam punches him in the nose and goes "Three times". I just love them and the chemistry they have is so good. I love that you adressed the Thiam were supposed to kiss thing. I had heard about it a bunch of times, but I never knew the source of it. I am excited to watch the Sterek video. I also saw a comment where you said you were watching Grey's Anatomy. And I was wondering if you plan to make a video about it? It is a really long show with two really long spin-off's and you said that you wouldn't like to do a Supernatural video in part because it's a really long show. However, I love Grey's Anatomy and I love your videos about shows, especially the bits you do (the shirts, the clay make-up look, and the howling bits are a few that I can think of of the top of my head) and your opinions of the characters, the plots and the relationships. Thank you for this video. It is so good, as are your other videos. And I love the length of these videos too. ❤️

Thanks for the sweet comment! Yes I am currently watching Grey's Anatomy, I made it through maybe 10 or 11 seasons as a kid but have been rewatching lately and I'm finally on the seasons I never watched back in the day. It's so interesting to see parts of the show that are completely new to me! I'm on season 17 and I've actually been really enjoying the last few seasons. Grey's is so soapy and fun, easy to get invested in. But like you said about Supernatural, I don't think I'll ever make a full Grey's breakdown just because it's SO LONG I don't even know how I'd begin to approach it lol. But that being said, I do have a lot of opinions on it so I have thought about maybe doing a shorter video someday where I zero in on a specific Greys-related topic? For example I recently got to the episode where Alex leaves the show, and it was so incredibly weird, I thought it might be fun to make a video just discussing that episode (no promises though!) Or maybe an unscripted vid talking about some of my general opinions or something. But I'm currently hard at work on my Lifetime Wrong video and after that I have another TV show breakdown planned (but it's a secret because I want to drop it as a surprise 😌) so I can't say if or when I'll get around to a Grey's Anatomy video. Even if I do I don't know if I'd include the spin-offs; I did watch a little Private Practice as a tween when I was first watching Grey's, but Station 19 doesn't interest me much tbh. Anyway thanks so much, I love to hear people say they rewatch my vids on the regular because I do that with my favorite youtube videos. I'm honored!!

Personally I found this film difficult to watch. I like Kristen Stewart but something was off about her the whole film. She doesn’t come across as natural at all and is over exaggerated every time she opens her mouth. Way too obvious that it’s an American actor playing a Brit.

I only watched the show after it aired, mainly because I’d heard so much about Sterek. I was absolutely shocked at how little there was to go on, and honestly, I didn’t ship them in the show at all, even as I voraciously devoured Sterek fic, of which there are so many brilliant works. I do agree that it’s a shame that the writers pulled back so hard, simply because, as you said, platonically they make a great “odd couple” comedy/drama duo.

I think one reason why these teen-adult relationships seem to be okay for a lot of people in these shows is the actual age of the actors. Tyler Hoechlin is 4 years older than Dylan O‘Brien, who was already 20 when the show was aired. Same with Nina Dobrev in TVD. So its not like its a real teenager and adult falling in love, which subconciously makes it a lot easier to watch.

thinking back about watching teen wolf and shipping Sterek... for me it was just their energy, I guess. I like the completely opposite personalities they had, that somehow worked in their scenes together. I rarely ship hetero couples, mostly because the girl is very... girly and the man is very... manly. I like the strong, independent women characters, but they don't usually get put in romantic relationships, because they are just that: a strong independent woman. Stiles had that vibe; outspoken and not afraid to say what was on his mind. But he also had this weird spark/connection with Derek. and sometimes these damsel in distress moments, but also not helpless. I think that's just what made it a perfect match for me. Both strong in their one ways as a single character, but also strong together. (at least, what canon gave us. we had to fill in a lot with headcanon to make it work 🙈)
