I just finished a great melon called a "kiss". I think it's a mix between a honeydew and a cantaloupe. Now you got me wondering whether it was GMO or not. I just googled it and can report it is a hybrid and not GMO, yay.

Most of our food like that is hybrid. Like I mentioned in the GMO section with the info graphic, there are actually very few varieties of GM foods on the market.

When I first saw cotton candy grapes in the stored, I did NOT buy them. I thought they had been artificially flavored! Years ago I had bought what I thought was an apple hybrid, the grapple....but that was a normal apple with artificial grape flavor injected into it. But after I found out cotton candy grapes were not artificial, I got them and loved them. I really love the lemon drop melon, which tastes like lemon candy... Only can get them in melon season.

I'm old fashioned. I get heirloom produce whenever I can. I don't like cotton candy grapes - too sweet for me. However, it was good to know that cross-pollination is something that can happen naturally with many crops, so probably not something that would harm us. That being said, I know that some foods, such as wheat, have been tampered with far too much and are actually not as healthy as they used to be. Eventually, manipulating plants that way can lead to them losing important nutrients and rendering them difficult to digest (hence gluten intolerance or celiac disease).

Fascinating info thanks! When cotton candy grapes first started hitting our market a handful of years ago there was only one brand, and they were only available for 1-2 months. I read an article back then from The Grapery, and they discovered the grape originally by accident when the two grapes you mentioned cross pollinated. Now of course other companies are creating them too, and we are able enjoy them a few more months of the year. My favorite grape!

Really interesting! I’d love one on GMO food and would like you to also address a related but important question: somewhere recently I read that even when these methods are safe the foods are risky because they were bred to survive pesticides so are more likely to have been sprayed heavily.
@Wwetitanfan273 жыл бұрын
Yeah the people who think there is nothing wrong w gmos are definitely missing that
@omarb26532 жыл бұрын
@@Wwetitanfan27 GMO in and of itself isn’t the issue then, it’s pesticides which are known carcinogens. Modifying an orange to express higher amounts of homogalactouranin, the enzyme that synthesizes pectin which gives the cell walls a thick protective coating, is not bad. In fact it could potentially reduce pesticide use which is good because there is a bigger protective layer between the inside of the fruit and the outside world which is full of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that would love to eat the fruit. GMOing a plant to be more herbicide and pesticide resistant could be dangerous to the consumer because more cancer causing agents are being sprayed onto your food which is a bad thing. It’s not so cut and dry as “GMO bad”
@Wwetitanfan272 жыл бұрын
@@omarb2653 I agree. My point was there are some who say GMO not bad and it's not that cut and dry in that direction either

I'd love to see what other info you can find on hybrid and GMO foods. I've read that anything without seeds is GMO even if they claim its non GMO. The biggest concern is what our countries consider non GMO and safe. For instance China sells a bottom feeder type fish to the US and calls it salmon. How do they get away with calling it salmon? Cuz China just slapped a label on it calling it salmon and the US don't care if its real salmon or not and they buy it cuz its cheap and then charge us consumers more money for it making us think its real salmon.
