Hey Peter, great Video comparing the older Sony cameras to the new a7siii. I think many people just think about the price of the camera not about the needed ecosystem upgrades that come with the purchase. The CFexpress Type A Cards (800mb/s) are rumored to cost 199€ for 80GB and 399€ for the 160GB 😅 so almost 2,50 per GB 🤯 for comparison a 128GB sandisk uhs2 sd card (300mb/s) will cost 155€ so 1,21 per GB. If we compare read and write speed I think the price for the new cards is expensive but reasonable. Lets just hope there will be some competition from other memory card manufacturers so prices will go down after a few months 🙏

I actually see the A 7s III as a great low light photo documentation camera. do the couples shoot of a wedding with the high res A 7r IV, and the festivities with 12 MP only. If your shooting style does not rely on cropping into scenes heavily, you should be doing great that way, getting the best of both worlds and 12 MB being more than enough for an 8x12 print. Which party image needs to end up on a billboard?

I’ve been waiting a7siii forever but unfortunately This pandemic happened and I must set my priorities right now budgeting. Hopefully things look better and more stable in a year. For now, I’m enjoying all the videos you post.

The s3 is a specialized low light 4k video camera in a compact body. The moment one works with 10 bit and higher frame/data rates computation automatically increases drastically. How much the extra visual improvement is from4k 30p (downsampled from 6k in some cases) vs price - computation time is another question. Monitor playback is another. However the increase in the technology that sony has given both in its s3 & r4 also raises the bar with what they will give with their next hybrid. Further if one complements the r4 with the s3 one has an amazing gamut of possibilities - including adding on audio tools

Nice! Helpful insights! Have you tried shooting in 420 10-bit instead of 422 10-bit? Wondering if that edits easier. Also if files sizes are smaller with 420 instead of 422?

Low light photo A7iii wins by a noticeable margin. Low light video A7siii wins by a large margin.

@@JamesClark1991 Where’s the visual proof? Of course the a7s III should perform the best but there are virtually zero low light video tests comparing all 3 especially against the a7R IV. Would be nice to see rather than just hear about it.

@@dwmspace Well in low light the A7Riv performs worse than the A7iii in low light and the A7Siii performs better than the A7iii in low light due to its second native ISO of 12800. Tells you all you need to know. Sharpness however is a totally different story and the Siii is dead last there. For the photo side of things there are DR charts which show very clearly the A7iii is currently the best lowlight performer.

btw, have you tried a Proxy workflow? Not sure how to work that with Final Cut, but on davinci, it's amazing. Imagine working with 720p files, then exporting in 4K. I see that the A7siii records proxies, and I'm wondering if the AF is gimped like in the past.

Good point on Data usage. I use a D750 and shoot 1080 - Im trying to figure which mirrorless has the best 1080 and not actually 4K as I really don't need or use it. I know that the Z6 has good 1080 and I think the R6 has as well but I really don't know about the A7S3.

I don’t think megapixel count matters as much. I think image quality produced by the sensor. Gerald Undone did a test against the R5. Can’t tell the difference if it’s not going to be blown up.

what kind of data rates did you see on the A7S III in 1080p? I'm looking for something to film with decent dynamic range, but as I edit on a laptop (recent i7) I'd be avoiding crazy high bitrate 4k. Any idea on 1080p filesizes etc that the S iii outputs?

Did you edit in 10-bit 4.2.2 or 10-bit 4.2.0? According to Max Yuryev the 4.2.0 is much easier to edit, he made a video where 4.2.2 video from the R5 made his very expensive Mac Pro struggle... I would be really interested to hear your thoughts and experiences on the Sony. I’m on a maxed out MacBook 16" 2019 and I’m beginning to feel it’s ancient already.... 😬

2:18 Did you use the H265 Compression? Try using the H264 SLOG3 Version, this should help you with your MacBook and speed problems.

Concerning the need of a fast computer, why not record in h.264 instead of h.265 and also choose a lower bitrate? Is that not possible? H.264 gives you bigger files but chosing a low bitrate could give you small files, right?

Helpful video! However all these comments about video size affecting computer speeds....and I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned using Proxy footage which is a setting you can use on the Sony A7 series that captures the 4k at the same time. Premiere has made it super simple to switch between proxy and 4k by the single click of a button on the menu bar. NO SLUGGISH editing and easy to toggle between both when needing to do fine tuned color correcting and touchups. Doesn't matter how powerful your computer is, even if you're editing off of an external SSD USB 4 drive it's still bottle necking and not maxing the Memory and Graphic Card et al. With proxy I've been able to edit on laptops with 8k footage using proxy at 1080.

I end up in your vid bc of a google search. But I stayed because daaamn! Man, your picture is so clean! Is that recorded with the a7iii? I am just curious which one should I get. The only reason I am getting into sony is because of the focus system and tracking. Is it worth to pay the double for the a7siii if I mainly want to use the cam for photography? I will maybe use it too for some video stuff after seeing you can reach a good picture like your video. But I normally use specific video/film cameras for that. Sorry, I went out of the topic. The A7SIII Is absolutely worth double the price, but the A7III is a damn good camera too! If you have the budget, I’d recommend the A7SIII!

Hey! The struggle is not because of your low specs; it is because of the 4:2:2 10 Bit. No graphics card supports 4:2:2 10 Bit yet. Though they supports 8/12/14/17.... Bits. So due to that the footage depends only on CPU. So don't blame your MacBook, that is a beast. You can play your footage on your iPad Pro, since it has HEVC Encoder and Decoder built into the proccessor.

Hey family, quick question :) Do you think that on a professional level this camera can be used for photography? (Outside of printing ofcourse) I shoot mainly swimwear, portraiture and events. A member of my team has an a7riii so for food/product photography which i do from time to time, i could just borrow his. Honestly i have this feeling to wait for the sony a7iv , i want something small and powerful in videos and photography . I own the BMPCC4K although i edit 4k 60 fps slow motion Raw videos, but i can easily edit the clips using my 8 core mac pro the old version and my late 2017 fully customized MacBook pro , so after hearing that its hard editing on the sony a7siii clips it reminded me of my struggle in editing the canon 1dxmii 4k clips , i guess i made my mind to wait. On the other hand, I know the sony a7siii has this high quality features but somehow i miss the cinematic feel that i can find in a7iii camera, after watching and watching lots of a7siii videos . Thanks bro

Peter .. the reason for ur computer to slow down is nly because of the the GPU ... That's because these GPUs r not able to decode the 4:2:2 format ... This info is available in nvidia's official website...
