For years, disability organizations and others have been aware of the violations that many people with disabilities experience in exercising the right to make their own decisions. All the while, we hear more and more stories of people having that right stripped from them through guardianship and substitute decision-making. Community organizations have been exploring what supported decision making could look like on the ground. In Newfoundland and Labrador, community has been talking with government about a significant overhaul of legal capacity laws. During this Zoom session, Michael Bach, Managing Director of IRIS (Institute for Research and Development on Inclusion and Society), discusses the concept of supported decision-making and where community is with the issue.
