Also, making cuts in social spending tends to backfire and results in far more expense down the road, I remember reading somewhere that for every $1 spent for WIC/SNAP now saves the government $7 later, example being lowering petty crime like shoplifting and the resulting prison and court costs.

France tried the guillotine in 1793, & after that incremental revolutions, 1830, 1848, 1870 & eventually developed a decent system. England didn't do much manor-burning, & had one civil war. They tried a non-monarchical system for 11 years, & put a king back on the throne. Thereafter, they depended on legislation. Now they have a constitutional monarchy, as do Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Spain (also restored), the most committed & functional democracies in the world. Almost every county has a community pantry where you buy low or even no cost canned goods, day old baked goods, frozen foods, etc. Stock up there. My sister in law puts out a ridiculously large garden every yr, we end up combining zucchini, peppers, green tomato's, etc into relish and canning it. Can tomatos or juice. Buy corn, eggs, fresh bread from the Amish, they won't price gouge you. Buy your meat from a local meatlocker, much cheaper than a grocery store, especially if you buy a quarter or half a beef/hog. Invest in a chest freezer. Shop at Sav-A-Lot or Aldi you can get incredible deals there. As for me, it's medication I worry about. I had a kidney transplant about a yr ago, if I lose Medicare I'm in deep doodoo.

They're going to go after Interior, which runs on less than 1% of the federal government. The average National Park unit runs on $1.5 million per year. Some get more, most get less. Then they'll move the goal posts and say "look we reduced the budget" and privatize the parks (Xanterra and Eastern National already treat their employees like shit) or sell them for scrap to whichever mining corpo waves the most money at Trump. What we're about to lose is going to be indescribable.

Then it's up to the people to prevent that loss by alternative means. Wildlife flourishes in guerrilla warzones, active minefields and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, there are ways to make the land unprofitable to exploit that harm it less than the companies would. Wildlife doesn't care much about spikes in trees or antivehicular mines. At least it might be possible delay them and grind down their resources for the 2-4 years it takes to get a possible reversal. Unfortunately, most such methods only attrit working-class patsies of the real villains, rather than the decision-makers, so while delaying actions are fought, efforts to cut the problem off at the source need to go on in parallel.

Thank you for the commentary, Belle. Congress does not fund Social Security. That is paid for by separate tax which is used to invest in US Treasury bonds. The Social Security Administration is the largest domestic creditor of US debt. Congress votes on how much of the loan to pay back.

Not one penny of the National Debt. was due to Social Security or Medicare. Both are still, and have always been, in the black. According to that all of the National Debt came about through discretionary spending that was both spent too much and not funded enough.

To get real net savings out of cutting those programs, they'd have to cut the programs without cutting the taxes that fund them. That'd be even less popular than cutting them already would be.

Besides the line item tax funding Social Security. The SSA buys Special US Treasury Bonds. The SSA is the largest domestic holder of US National debt. They are the creditors not the debtors.

@@shawnr771 In a sense. Depends on how you look at the accounting. Whether you just look at the general budget or whether you look at all federal revenue/spending. In the first case, you're right, but from the second point of view it's just more income and more expenditure. From the first pov, cutting SS spending without cutting revenue would actually increase the debt, while doing the opposite would lead to the SS Fund going broke faster, but also reduce debt.
