I'm not sure what Vance'a background in debate is, but if he debated competitively in high school or college, or had a job where he debated professionally, like an attorney, and Waltz does not, It will make it very difficult for Waltz to win Being a teacher doesn't make a good debater and might actually cause problems.

Also, I could be wrong, but he has a Yale law degree, which as far as I now includes some training and exercises in debate. As far as 20 years of experience (I'm assuming you mean Waltz here), what are you referring to. 20 years of experience in what? I'm only expressing a concern here. Being a good debater doesn't make someone a better person. But I've seen plenty of cases of experts being torn to pieces by someone who knows very little about the subject matter but is well practiced at debates. They weren't wrong, debate isn't for fact-finding, it's for persuasion. There are better methods for fact-finding (e.g. a courtroom trial, academic peer review), and even then they're not without glaring flaws.

If Vance can spew lies in a confident manner while Walz provides facts with any sort of hesitancy or equivocation, Vance might end up closing the gap between them, at least for the low-information voters. It could be a win of form over function. Fortunately, I don't believe even this worst case scenario will be enough to move the needle much on the ultimate outcome.

Would love it if Walz just goes 'Midwest Dad' and says something like, "Well, that was a lie, right there. But here's what's really important..." then continues with his point on the subject without pause. Leave it up to the audience to figure out what the lie was without getting overwrought or even refuting it. "Whew! You're gonna be in confession for that one, buddy. Now, what people are really worried about is..." Nothing like dadding or teachering (giving the teacher look) another candidate to make him look foolish. As a former teacher and foster mom, this could be fun to watch.

To my mind, with Trump's rapid deterioration, Vance is far more likely to be the next president than Trump. This makes the debate doubly important for Vance, it's his big pitch for the presidency. (Although a Vance presidency would be equally catastrophic for the country).

Vance is going to lie, lie, lie. He will try to do it in a calm, measured tone to try to give his lies gravitas. Vance will say the sky is green and expect people to believe him. I also expect Vance to try to portray Walz as weak and imply he isn't a "strong man". He'll say that Walz avoided Iraq. Vance will try to get Walz to sound defensive and thus make himself look stronger. I hope Walz stays positive, but also drills Vance on what he has said about women and that he was chosen as Trump's VP because of his willingness to be a sycophant.
