Dear Juilo I hope you are well. I own the pro 2 and recently seen a well priced phase one mamiya fitment P30 digital back. However, as far as I understand this won't work with the Pro II as I require a hassleblad v-fit adaptor? I'm confused as to what I need.
@RyuuzakiJulio5 жыл бұрын
Ferhan Khan Photography Phase One mamiya fitment? You mean is a Mamiya Mount? The same digital backs, P30 per example, can come with different mounts. A P30 can come with V mount or H mount or M mount or C mount. This is part of the mounting mechanism on the digital back, the internal components are the same, but the body is designed to fit a certain type of camera. Most of mounts can be used in a RZ Pro II, but only the M mount has an adaptor that rotates on R mode. So I would not recommend any other mount than M mount. If it says the back is for mamiya, then is most probably an M mount. But I would ask to what camera it connects directly without using an adapter. If they say it was used on a Hasselblad cm500 per example then its a V mount and i don’t recommend you to get it, you can still use it on the Pro II but you still need to buy a 1000 dlls adapter anyway and it wont rotate. You would have to disconnect it and rotate it with your hands in the air and connect it sideways or vertical. I’m not a fan of exposing the sensor every time I need to turn the digital back, the best point of the RZ is the R = REVOLVING, so it would loose its most important feature. Hope it helps.

I see you use RZ 67 Pro II and digital back through adapter and with NO any cabels... Will be appreciate for you reply! Thank you for what you're doing! ;)
@RyuuzakiJulio3 жыл бұрын
You do need 1 cable. And set up your digital back as a non Pro IID version in the camera settings. I think the other version just says RZ67 (not Pro II) I made the mistake of doing that settings trying to save the EXIF data as having a more “cool” camera (ProIID) but when you do that setting the digital back is waiting for the trigger signal from the ProIID connectors that the ProII doesn’t have. So yeah, you do need a cable. Check my other videos for it. One of the latest I explained everything about digital backs including plates and cables.

interesting video, the term you are looking for with regards to the cables is what phase one and other back makers call "latency"- i.e. is the back always 'on' or does it require a "wake up call", the same also applies to 4x5 photo lenses as well.
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
You are completely right, Latency mode. I didn't got the name until I started using a Phase One more often. Leaf backs don't really explain clearly whats going on. But thanks for making it clear again.

Hi Julio, first I would really like to thank you for your help regarding the use of the RZ with digital back. I am just starting shooting my RZ with a digital back and, of course, a lot of questions raise and will keep raising in the future. You have mentioned the crop factor in the beginning of the movie and I have been trying to figure out what would be the result on mamiya lenses, I mean, lets suppose I have a 65mm MF Lenses, what would this be with the digital back, a 80mm? I did not find any chart online that would give me an answer. Muchas gracias y un saludo desde Lisboa, João
@RyuuzakiJulio5 жыл бұрын
There is some math formulas to do that. The problem is that the factor is not the same. Some sensors are more square than the 6x7 they are not proportional. An easy way to do it is to see how much percent of space hour sensor uses out of the 6x7. If you get a circle and put a mark on the 110 lens edges, the 50 lens edges, and so on. When you put a digital back and take a photo you might be having a closer guess at what is the actual angle of capture.

joao nauman well it doesn’t really matter that much. If you have the image on the frame, I had never bothered to know exactly how much MM it was equivalent. Specially if latter you crop your image, technically you would be zooming in (making the lens mm a larger number) just as an average a 110 lens on the RZ would be like a 55mm on the 35mm cameras, and with a digital back you might be looking around 75mm on the 35mm. Is a lot of numbers specially if you want to compare to the angle of capture of the 35mm cameras.

@@estudio_peso the aptus has a connector that looks like the headphones one, but is a bit smaller, that cable to pc-sync. Is easier to find than the IQ cable. and way more chepaer than it. Ugly part is the firewire which is specially made to fit the Aptus and is more expensive than the IQ firewire.

Ben Hanggai hi Ben thanks for the question. I have said a lot of times I totally recommend the RZ67 Pro II because of the fine focus and the half step speeds. But if you already have the RB just make sure you get an M mount back and that the adapter plate you use on your RB can be used on the RZ if you decide to upgrade. From the RB to the RZ there isn’t much price difference if you consider that you will go for a digital back and an adapter plate anyway. Just the adapter plate will cost you the price of a used RZ. No need to go for the 2000 dlls pro IID

Hi Julio, do you find that the Pro ii D with the DM 33 has a shutter lag? My friend has a non D model with a P65+ and he is able to shoot really fast with no shutter lag.
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
Peter Diseris well the shutter mechanism is in the lens themselves and there is no lenses specially made for the Pro IiD it actually uses the lenses from the Pro II and Can use even lenses from the RB systems. If you are talking about the moment when you press your finger thinking you freeze the subject at a certain moment and on your photo it seems like that moment has already passed for some micro seconds, yes! I had that feeling since I moved out of 35mm DSLR to my Pro II (Not D). The shutter button is not an electronic small button but it has to travel a movement distance from its resting position, passing trough the security exposure checks (half press) and finally the actual shoot, it is a button that works with electricity but is triggering action is more mechanical than a DSLR. Once depressed all the way the large mirror needs to lift up and then the lens would be ready to start an exposure, so you have the moment you decide to shoot, the moment the finger starts pushing down, the moment the pushing passes the half press state, the moment it actually triggers and starts lifting the mirror AND set the exposure leaves on the desired aperture, the moment it takes for the mirror to lift up completely and tell the lens is ok to start the exposure and finally when the lens opens its covering leaves letting light in trough the already set up aperture. I have used several Pro II with 6 digital backs and all of them do the same, is a matter of not waiting for the moment but learn to time yourself to anticipate that moment and push before, also I keep my finger half pressed when I’m shooting something fast. If you are talking about some serious lag then the lens could be acting up. I noticed some of my old lenses not giving me exactly the 400 when I set it to while other lenses do.
@pdiseris2 жыл бұрын
@@RyuuzakiJulio When you bypass the electronics with tape on the adapter plaste and use a wake up cable to the lens, this lag doesn't happen, however it does expose the image by a stop less than when you use the adapter plate's electronic contacts. So weird.

Hi Julio Ryuuzaki! Thanks for your wonderful videos! I am a proud owner of a Mamiya RZ67 Pro II D. I foresee that I will buy a digital back in future but before that I have some questions I hope you can answer me. From your videos, am I correct to assume that it is required for me to purchase a HX701 adapter for my Mamiya RZ67 Pro II D to use with a digital back? With that, do I see need a "wake up" cable that connects the digital backs to my camera? Thank you very much and I look forward to your reply
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
Wow nice a pro IID owner! do don't necesarily need to buy that HX701 to use a digital back. But if you don't, there is no use for you to have the Pro IID, since that is the adapter designed for the Pro II D. Also that adapter only comes with Mamiya "M" mount. So your digital back, whatever you choose, it has to be an "M" mount. If you get the HX701 you also get the rotation ability, so 100% recommend you to get that HX701 for your Pro IID. And search for an M Mount Digital Back. And no, you won't need a "Wake Up" cable with that adapter, I didn't had much chance to play with a Pro IID but maybe you don't even need a cable to trigger the camera. But I am not completely sure of that. Does this answer your question?
@litailong15658 жыл бұрын
Hi again! Thank you. What other adapters is available for my Pro II D if I want to purchase a digital back?
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
There is Phase One adapters for the RZ, several versions for different mounts, there is also D&A (Digital Arts Institute) digital backs for other mounts, but this ones do require the wake up cable & in most cases they do not rotate when you set your camera in R mode. Also price range doesn't change at all, from 800-900 dlls all of them, you might as well get the HX701.

The P25+ should have an output for flash signal. It should be the left bottom side connector, almost in the corner of the digital back. Ciao --- I have a rb67 mamiya is there any digital backs too for this mamiya?
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+kp pineda digital backs are not specifically made for a camera but for a type of mount found in certain cameras. If you put an adapter plate on your RB to fit a hasselblad V mount (the cm 500 series) then you can use a digital back with a V mount on your RB, same for Mamiya mount M (645 Series) or new digital hasselblad H series with the H mount. Is all about the adapter plate and yes I believe there are a few plates for the RB that will allow it to use many types of digital backs. PS I would still recommend the upgrade to the pro 2 for the fine focus and the half steps on the speed dial. Hope it helps and sorry for the delay in the answer. Been shooting a lot here in Tokyo.

Hi Julio, love watching your videos - such a laid back unpretentious style - that's rare on youtube! I am wondering how the RZ 67 is fired per shot with a digi back - with film one had to cock the shutter - do you have to do that with a digi back? I read something about having to set the dial to M. Does this then allow the digi back to be triggered electrically via a cable? For example, coul dyou trigger the shutter repeatedly from a tethered computer without needing to go near the camera once the shutter is cocked and set to M? I have a in mind something a but unusual for an RZ setup - if the shutter can fire via cable without needing to cock the shutter for each frame - i want to use a Gigapan panorama head to take around 200-300 shots per session one after the other controlled by the Gigapan head - not sure if the RZ will allow to be used this way? I am interested in a "Fat Pixel" back ..the P25+ or a P45+ ? The res is of no importance as the gigapan will build up the panorama with hundreds of shots that get stitched together. I just dont know if the RZ Pro IID will allow the leaf shutter in the lens to be triggered repeatedly - any thoughts?
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
+Jim Jones Hi Jim! Thank you dearly for your comment and question I'll try to answer the best I can. First of all, the RZ67 Pro II and the Pro IID don't receive any communication from the digital back. The cranking of the Lever as I mention in other videos have several functions (reset the mirror, crank the shutter in the lens and wind the next frame on a film back) when used with a digital back there is no frame to move to so it has to be set up in M (multiple exposure mode) so it ignores that but still need to wind for the mirror and the lens shutter reset. The camera can be winded with a motor winder automatically after the exposure has been made. And the camera could be triggered with an electromechanical contacts in front, I believe some digital backs sell a cable that connects here and is able to shoot the camera from the computer, but I haven't used or even seen that cable before, I just read about it, and since it's made specifically for the RZ67 Pro II (or Pro IID) connector it's a bit expensive. If you know a little electronics you could make a device to trigger the camera since it's a simple contact Switch that is needed. The P45+ has a larger sensor but is just for 1 mm and the extra definition ain't bad if you can afford it. I hope it helps. Feel free to ask anything else, I'll do my best to reply.

I have bought an RZ67 Pro IID and an Aptus II 10 in AFI mount - just not taken delivery of it. But i am wondering if a fat pixel back makes any sense for landscape work and how i can get the RZ to work on the gigapan using a fatpixel back - dont really want to use my Aptus II 10 for this as it involves hundreds of shots to stitch one image - dont want the wear and tear on my Aptus II 10 as its brand new (New Old Stock). I cant be cocking the shutter for every exposure - does the motor winder remove the need to cock the shutter for each exposure ? How can i take a hundred exposures without touching the camera ? Think of it as sitting at a computer and triggering the RZ 100 times to take 100 images - how does one do this - can it even be done on an RZ ? Well whatever....if i cant make it work i will use another camera - but i really want to use those RZ lenses for landscape work - totally committed to the RZ Pro IID. So insanely cheap for what they are - lets keep the secret to ourselves, we dont want the prices to go up ;-) Thanks for the info and keep those great videos coming - love'm and your style.

+Jim Jones well the digital back would have no wear and tear as it doesn't really have moving parts; unless you are talking about transportation and weather. 100-200 shoots are pretty aceptable per session even 1 single good battery should give you around 300 shoots depending on your power settings. And yes the winder removes the need to touch the Lever at all. Like I said it is possible to trigger the camera remotely but you need a very special cable for it unless you can make one. One thing I forgot to mention is that those digital backs can only tether with FireWire and the new laptops won't have power enough to turn them on, you do have to remove the battery to plug in the FireWire. (I'm talking about the Aptus and P+ series) So maybe if you are talking about outdoors it could not be an easy thing to achieve since the FireWire would have to have a powered hub in between the camera and the laptop.
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
+Jim Jones In addition I have managed to successfully power my old DM33 (Aptus II-7) with a laptop but I had to shoot pretty slow and take the backs brightness all the way down to 20%, more than that the back would shut down after a few shoots.

George Mathew i really don’t know how different the mounting plates are from the RZ to the RB. Can you actually fit a film back of an RZ (pro II if possible) into an RB? Feels to me it’s not possible but I don’t know how much they changed the mount it anything at all. What you need is just the trigger signal to take a photo with the digital back, so it doesn’t even need a camera to trigger a photo, so technically as long as you can slap it on the right distance from the lens (as the film would be) you could even just duck tape the crap out of the digital back in place and make sure no light spill happens. That’s how this backs work with Large Format cameras which are just a box with a lens in the other side, the mount is just a holder for the back.

@RyuuzakiJulio Жыл бұрын
@@ignatprokhoropchyuck4652 I assume your question is, do you need an adapter plate to use a digital back on the PROIID. Yes. The "D" part just enables some basic communication between the camera and back. So the connectors exist. However the PRO IID is primarily designed to be used with normal 6x7 film backs, which have a much larger area than any digital back, and no digital back comes in a format that fits the 6x7 mount of the RZ67. Adapter will be needed in II and IID. The IID will only save you the need of a X-Sync cable between the lens and digital back but ONLY if you have the HX-701.

Hello. why do not you want to have Mamiya body with autofocus?
@RyuuzakiJulio5 жыл бұрын
The Medium Format autofocus is still far from good. They usually just have a single center focus point, the optical physics of those lens make it more difficult to create a decent focusing system. Since old times there has been amazing work done before autofocus existed. So is totally possible to do amazing work if you know about depth of field and focusing distances measurements. Is just matter of getting used to the numbers and learn to calculate the field of focus according to your lens and focus distance.

@@RyuuzakiJulio It is sad a bit ... or maybe the latest body is ok?
@RyuuzakiJulio5 жыл бұрын
NINJA STYLE the pro IID is way too expensive for what it gives you. Manual focus is not bad at all. You can check my work on my Instagram or website. All those photos are made with manual focus with no problems.

Hello Julio! I d wish to have found your great vid before I discovered many things you ve explained , the hard way on my own!. Anyhow I have a couple of questions I think might help others as well. BTW I have a RZ proii and a leaf aptus ii 7. First one: No matter how much care I use , the sensor gets dust. I had the camera cleaned, lenses cleaned, I shoot in studio but sooner than later I find my sensor dirty: I can cope with few dots but when become too visible I need to clean it. In a week of shooting I d need a clean. Easy, yes but anyhow always risky. Someone told me that the bellow is the responsible, don t know, I d like to know if you experience the same and how to avoid it. Second and more serious: Focus. I have a front focus problem meaning the camera thinks the focus is closer than it actually is. Someone over internet , suggests the culprit being the focus screen ( actually I have changed few I have and the front focus remains but changes in amount) . The solution would be a fine tuning of screws that I have been not capable to find out. Do you know how to do it? Is this the solution? Anyhow I am quite sorry to do that because with film the focus is spot on. Hope you can help me out. All the best to you!, claudio

The dust is pretty much the place you are in. I get dust on the back too, but you have to blow it off as soon as you can, since I moved to Japan, dust almost disappeared completely (keyword being "almost"). For the focusing problem you have to calibrate the elevation of the ground glass. Where you assemble the ground glass on the camera it's on top of 3 screws, all you have to do is 1000 tests to make sure the focus is exactly the same as you see in the view finder than the one in the digital back. Definitively don't recommend you to touch the sensor that much, blow as much as you can with a rocket blower or something

By the way thank you so much for your feedback. And is so interesting to find someone with the same camera and back that I had. Got to love that combo!

I ll do that. I suppose that once I adjust it for the Digital back...then it will be KO for film, right? sadness is on me...
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+Claudio Cazzara not necessarily if you are using the HX701 or HX705 it should put the digital back at exactly the same distance of the film. It might make film look even better I got both great focus with film and back without adjusting the focusing screen

Hi, Can you please answer this question? i got RZ67 Pro II, and i got Phaseone IQ160, from what i understand the HX-701 adapter will not work with (Pro II) i need to get the (Pro IID), but what understand from your informative video that the HX-701 will work with ProII with no problem, so is that correct? Thanks
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
The important thing is the mount type of your IQ160 (btw congratulations) the digital back should be having one of 4 common mounts. Is either a V mount for old hasselblad, an H mount for new digital hasselblads a C mount for Contax or TO USE THAT ADAPTER YOU NEED TO HAVE AN M MOUNT. The same digital back has different mounts and this can't be changed. So if you got an M mount you can use the 701 but if is any of the others you would need a different adapter for your RZ. And yes it will work just fine on your Pro II . As long as your digital back is an M mount.
@EsamKabliPhotography8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the informative and fast reply, yes it got M mount since i am using it with 645DF+ body.
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+EsamKabliPhotography no worries I love to be helpful. So is an M mount you can use the adapter for the RZ67 Pro IID and you will be all set up. You also need the wake up cable from the lens to the back if you don't have the D version of the RZ but that's less than 20 dlls.
@EsamKabliPhotography8 жыл бұрын
Hi Julio, i received the HX-701 adapter today, and i installed on the RZ67 pro ii, and i attached the wake up cable between the lens and the back i choose RZ67 pro iid from the back sitting and the shutter latency Zero, but the back is not working? do you got any idea why? Thanks
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
OH YES! I totally forgot to mention that! I was planning to do it on a tutorial of the Leaf Aptus. The RZ67 Pro IID settings assumes that the "Camera Body" will send the signal, so the back is waiting for the Camera to send the signal trough the adapter and completely ignoring the Wake Up Cable. I had the same issue, and its all because I wanted my METADATA to show PRO IID instead of the simple RZ67. All you need to do is set up the back as the RB/RZ67 option, I know it feels wired because is not Pro II, but is only to tell the back to use the Wake Up Cable instead of waiting for the trigger data on the Adapter Plate. This will totally fix your issue.

will the rz67 original version work with the m adapter plate and the backs you are talking about. I have two Rz 67's that I havn't use in ten years. Cliff Posey
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+Clifford Posey there are several adapter plates for the RZ system. The one I am showing here is the HX701. I'm not sure if a modification has to be done on the camera to allow the plate to attach on the original RZ67. I do recommend very much to get the pro II since the price difference isn't that big from the original RZs.
@cliffordposey65288 жыл бұрын
There's not much difference in the pro 2 except the fine focusing knob and the 1/2 stop shutter speeds. I would like to use my original rz's if possible that way I would already have a back up. I really miss using the Rz's I shoot mainly wedding and portraits and events, every thing has went 35 digital. I have the canon 6d. I've been waiting for the price of digital backs to come down. Theres nothing like the Rz. How's the crop factor on your back. I have the 110 mm, 65 mm and the 180 mm.
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
I know is possible to put the backs on RZ and even on the RB, just not sure which one is the one that needs a small modification in the camera depending on the adapter you get. Some adapters also don't turn with the R mode. I made another video on Masks for Digital Backs. There you can check how small I got the crop, I got the 50, 110 and 180, and not thinking on getting any other for now.

Hi again, Julio! I have more questions for you I hope you don't mind. As I am still waiting for the arrival of my lens, I do not have a lens to test my Pro II D. I wanted to test if my hot shoe is still working so I put my flash trigger on the hot shoe and fire the shutter a few times. The flash was not triggered at all. Do I need a lens to be mounted on my camera body in order to test if I can trigger a flash thru a trigger on my hot shoe?
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+Li Tai Long hi again! Of course I don't mind. Interesting question. the camera won't trigger without lens unless you put it on emergency mode. And in they case it won't send any signal, not even to the winder.
@litailong15658 жыл бұрын
+Julio Ryuuzaki so what you mean is, it is normal that my flash won't fire without a lens? What is this emergency mode you were taking about?
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+Li Tai Long on the shutter button on the camera. If you put it on the orange dot it means Emergency mode. It won't send any electrical signals or make any error check. If the camera does not have a lens it should not trigger the shoot. The only way you can trigger the shoot is by putting it on emergency mode and that way won't sent any electrical signals anywhere including the flash.
@litailong15658 жыл бұрын
I see, that makes perfect sense! The lens is on the way so I think I have to wait till I got the lens to test. Thank you very much!
@RyuuzakiJulio8 жыл бұрын
+Li Tai Long I wish I could see another way to test the hot shoe adapter by itself but I did several tests in my camera by taking the lens out. And there is no way to shoot it without a lens unless emergency mode. (There is another way to shoot it without lens not in emergency mode which it would be on RBL mode on the speed dial, but even that this mode sends a signal to the winder it won't actually send a signal to the hot shoe, and my camera's hot shoe is working) it seems like the trigger of the hot shoe is directly linked to the trigger in the lens.

Hi, do I understand you correclty? I now have a RB67 Pro SD with 2 KL lenses and a Pro SD 120 film back. Can I switch the RB67 body to a RZ II / IID, buy the RZ67 adapter to a digital back and use my KL lenses and film back further? Thank you!
@RyuuzakiJulio6 жыл бұрын
The Pro II has a speed setting for RB mode, there you can use an RB lens, but as far as I am aware, it will not receive RB backs, only RZ Pro 1 backs.
@GodOfWaaar6 жыл бұрын
@@RyuuzakiJulio Hm, ok, thanks! Then I should have a look at a whole RZ body with back if I go the digital back route.
@RyuuzakiJulio6 жыл бұрын
Sounds about right. Those K/L lenses have a pc-sync port that will tell the digital back to trigger the image and the RZ Pro II / IID can work with the RB lenses, including those K/L lenses. If anything this lenses came with a plastic O ring adapter that helps seal light when using it with the Pro-SD model. So maybe the RZ needs that to perfectly seal the light.
