I don’t understand why everyone automatically expects Bourne (who had just lost his lover) to develop some kind of new relationship with one of the lead actresses (Nikki or Pamela). Also why do they feel Nikki was underutitlized? She was in a 3rd of the movie, and frankly, she had more screen time than Marie this time around.

The thing i really really like about this franchise is that Jason doesnt have high end gadgets at his disposal. He literally has nothing and needs to figure it out on the fly. Grabbing an Emergency Escape board off a wall to see some blueprints to know where he's going. Grabbing a radio from the guy he knocked out to be able to tell where everybody is coming from. Grabbing a book or a pen and use it as a weapon for CQB etc.

For Jen. The reason Bourne was focusing on the two Russians he killed in Berlin is cause remember he was being framed for killing two people in Berlin. And that helped his memories in his first mission being in Berlin. Which was off the books. Cause Nikki didn't even know about Berlin. She told Bourne that "your first assignment was Geneva". Then Bourne went off on her and put the gun to her head. I think a second watch might help connect the story for you.

Remember at the beginning in that Jason Bourne and Marie switched seats at the beginning of the car chase, leading the sniper to believe he shot the driver seat's occupant, and thus killing his objective. On top of that, any special forces training will have had Bourne trained to endure longer underwater times, buying him the necessary time to escape view from his enemy's point of view from the bridge. Very well thought out directing/writing/screenplay. So the trope of the bad guy not waiting to confirm the body here wasn't a trope at all and well within reason, especially since we aren't given a definitive amount of time passed from the sniper shot to the jeep recovery.

He apologizes because he only went through with that mission because he wanted to prove himself to Chonclin and the agency. But not only did he go against his conscience, he did an unsanctioned hit against someone for the personal/political benefit of his supervisors... the guy wasnt s national security threat. Jason never had to take out innocent people and doesnt want to, but he burried that part to be accepted into the agency. But it keeps haunting him which is why he still remembers and dreams about it. It also sheds light on why he didn't go through with taking out Wambozi in the first movie. He'd been haunted by his past action, and was about to repeat it, but couldnt, thus he got pewpewed in the back.
@rmora1
@rmora1 2 күн бұрын
jason would have no way of knowing if it was unsanctioned, he only followed orders, as he was trained. Jason would not have been told if his targets were security threats or innocent only that they were his targets, but in the neski case it went wrong when he killed the wife who was not a target, that was why he felt remorse for his actions. When he went to wambozi he saw his son and could not kill a child so he failed to kill wambozi and was shot escaping, then hit his head when he fell into the water causing his amnesia.

@rmora1 and in Ultimatum, we see that when hes asked in the interrogation room to eleminate the hooded man, his question is "what did he do". The answer he gets back is something pretty much just alluding to the guy being a bad actor, so he does it. But that brings us to one of themes in the series, and its that the agents in the program have given up their humanity to be a part it. They act as machines and its hurting them, giving them the migraines. And i already made it clear that hes mainly remorseful for the wife, but the icing on the cake was finding out it wasnt for national security reasons, but his supervisors personal reason. The end of Ultimatum, he says to the other assassin two things to nail it all home. He asks, "do you know why youre suppose to kkell me?", then he says, "look at what they make give up". Thats not just a call back to first movie, it encapsulates all that we have been discovering about Jason Bourne and the Treadstone/Blackbriar programs

Agreed, I think this is part of the movie that suffers from the PG-13 rating. In general, I trust the trained assassin to be able to KNOW when someone is dead and not recoverable, and have the ability to shut off those deep emotions enough to let her go and escape and deal with the pain later.

Long felt this, but especially after reading comments here, Marie getting killed switches Jason from defensively running, hiding/protecting Marie to offense of going after Treadstone and Kiril(Marie's killer). I know in the books it's different, but the film seems to be using that narrative throughput. As far as the Nevski girl, he says to her 'When people are taken from you, you wanna know why', so I think losing Marie while having the Berlin murders flashing in his brain made him empathize with her loss and he wanted to atone. Similar to how we see him developing with not killing the old guy as opposed to recording him and saying 'She wouldn't want me too'. Her death, and just her having been his life makes him evolve.

3 notes: Regards the shaky cam - you fail to recall this was NOT made for video or TV sized screens, it was made for theatrical release, where screens are 40-60 feet wide. With large screen your zone of focus of the eyes is rather small, occupying only a small fraction of the screen. it is not nearly as jarring in that case, and it gives the sense you are actually there as your head would be bouncing around with Jason. Many movies suffer from improper perspective when watched on laptop sized or even larger TV screens. Two is Marie's death = if you watched on a large enough screen she was shot in the head - which is essentially like a switch regards death. Jason was already about 50 feet under water when he tried mouth to mouth and he understood she was gone. The scene was appropriate regards the no nonsense, pragmatic nature of Bourne. And three, Jason went to the girl, because he remembered killing her parents and he learned it was not sanctioned because Nikki did not know about it. Everyone else he killed were indeed bad people, but this mission was not - and he felt akin to the daughter's pain having lost Marie.... Also remember why he hesitated to kill Wombosi in the first film, because his children were on his lap - his conscience could not accept the collateral damage and this daughter was the same kind of thing - so the story works if you watch/listen carefully.

I think using shakey cam for the Bourne films is a perfect marriage. The art of it is that each shot tends to just give you one detail & if you’re honed in, it can ironically be a very focused viewing experience. A still frame is not adequate enough to allow us to focus in on what Jason sees. I think it’s a smart choice & I don’t think it takes away from the impact of each scene.

The reasons for Bourne trying to mend his ways with this particular murder are given in the movie. Firstly: Newski was supposed to be alone, his wife was the collateral damage in murder that (secondly) was done of the books to cover up Conklin taking bribe. There is also implied similarity with Jason's own situation. Marie is Collateral damage in his situation. after first movie they thought they escaped Tredstone and it' s successor (watch Legacy for deeper dive in that). And actually they did. the whole situation got stirred up by Russian defector trying to contact US agencies about dirty operatives in their system. Julia styles gives the best performance in Bourne franchise in this movie IMO. Yes, Nikki has more significant role in next two Damon's Bourne movies but the Metro scenes in this movie are the best scenes from her while her reaction to Bourne asking to meet her is the best insight in Nikki as character. While she is an CIA operative she does administrative work so when she has go for field work she is scared. it tells more about her character then what happens in next movie.

The shaky Cam as you put it, was to show how fast paced the action was happening. A lot of the chase scenes were filmed on location, really don't have time for extended car chase scenes. As for the Mistake Jason made was switching seats that got Marie killed, That bit was to force his hand to bring him back into fold by nobody but by the story teller, with him staying under water was to convince the Assassin that he was dead. any type of movement could have been seen from onlookers. So no moving under the bridge. These movies were taken from Novels From Robert Ludlum and of course are subject change. But they did a pretty good job keeping to the story. Keeping in line with the Trilogy you will see his story come to a head and Nikki will play a huge part in it.

If the handful of shaky cam criticisms (which were effective nonetheless) were the biggest directorial issues, that's quite a compliment. Marie's death makes sense, you both (Holden & Jen) assumed she might not make it the first film, so this shouldn't come as a super surprise, but we live in the moment I guess. An assassin of his caliber is no James Bond, his romances are as brief as allowed they can stay undercover.

Repeating my message from the previous Bourne movie, but I really hope you guys watch Legacy. It's definitely better than the fourth Matt Damon's Bourne movie and to me Renner is much more believable agent.

I personally love The Bourne Supremacy book better then the movie. Much better plot. Oh, and in the book Marie doesnt die. Also, (no spoilers because they dont use this plot point in the movies) but Jason doesnt just suffer from amnesia, but also from Multiple Personality Disorder. There are atleast 4 complete and different personalities inside of Jason, and thats what the book goes into, is the internal fight within for control.

I love this movie, but the shaky cam is definitely overused. The fight scenes aren't nearly as crisp as other movies. But don't worry because Bourne Ultimatum will solve everything. Love that movie and can't wait. This entire franchise still feels so underrated and if anyone is interested I completely 100% recommend the books.

Part of the reason for the choppiness is scenes were deliberately left out of the first movie and put in the second movie shot years later and the same thing happens with 3 scenes is this movie were shot and left out to be in 3 which is shot years later. Also, they hired one director for the first one who didn’t have a clear vision of the movie and was way over budget and late finishing which is when the guy who filmed 2 and 3 was brought on board to finish the movie.

On your own time, check out the end of the first movie and notice the project name that Brian Cox's character presented to a Senate subcommittee before watching the 3rd movie (if you haven't reacted to it yet).

Don't forget there's Bourne books by Robert Ludlum that the movies should largely be following (I haven't actually read that series, so not sure how true they stay to them). Marie dying and us meeting up with Nicky Parsons again could well have had nothing to do with wanting Julia Stiles in the movie more...

You should go through the entire series, many people stop after the original three but you get good backstory and understanding of the world Bourne is in and more of his journey.

Another excel movie! You should definitely check out “The Bourne Legacy”. It stars Jermey Rennie and Rachael Weisz. It is in the same time as the Matt Damon films but follows a different plot. I think it is fantastic and it provides more details about the program. Jason Bourne, on the other hand, is a B movie. It’s okay but you could watch other movies. In the espionage stories, I could suggest “Atomic Blonde” with Charlize Theron and John Goodman. A very high-energy film from a graphic novel or “A Bridge of Spies”, a very historical film about the Cold War. Both are excellent.
