Oh hell yeah this is an instant classic. The whole mystery setup on who Jason is, is done so well imo. Like we get the idea he was an agent, we understand that it was a mission gone wrong but what was the mission, who gave the order, and why? Finding those out is the real juice of the story. And the fight scenes are insane imo since that even though he has amnesia, Jason’s muscle memory is clearly at peak performance, and he just kinda runs with it even though he has no idea why he knows how he’s doing it.

Was at a used book store and saw a Bourne book, looked at where it was and yea jus jaw dropped by how many there were. For instance there’s …. The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy, The Bourne Betrayal, The Bourne Sanction, The Bourne Deception, The Bourne Objective, The Bourne Dominion, The Bourne Imperative, The Bourne Retribution, The Bourne Ascendancy, The Bourne Enigma, The Bourne Initiative, The Bourne Evolution, The Bourne Treachery, The Bourne Sacrifice, The Bourne Defiance, The Bourne Shadow. I’m amazed at how the put “Bourne” in every title still.

There was already a movie called The Bourne Identity in 1988 based on the same novel with Richard Chamberlain as Jason Bourne. The novel also inspired a franco-belgian comic book series called XIII. The comic books also have a really good video game adaptation and a not so good movie and tv series adaptation. You see the Bourne/XIII family tree is really wide spread ;)

Unquestionably one of the best spy franchises. James Bond (007) and Ethan Hunt (IMF) were cool, but Jason Bourne was more my speed. Because he was so flawed, reluctant, relatable and stoic. The novel series by Robert Ludlum debuted in the year I was born (1980). I saw the very-first screen adaptation on television with Richard Chamberlain & Jaclyn Smith when I was 8 (1988). Definite Inspiration on The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) and Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (1998). Matt Damon getting his own franchise, 5 years after winning an Academy Award was unprecedented. So great from start to finish and more of an tradition approach to the genre. I have the special edition from 2004 with alternate beginning and ending that makes the story more complex. There was a video-game in 2008 called The Bourne Conspiracy on PS3/Xbox 360. It was a retelling of the first movie and kinda fun. The next 2 films (2004, 2007) are incredible. The 3rd film (2012) with Jeremy Renner is not liked very much. But was a decent enough sequel to me. The 4th film (2016) with Damon's return as Bourne, regardless of the years gone by since we've seen him is phenomenal. Extreme Ways (The Bourne Theme) by Moby in it's many versions throughout the films are so good.

By the way... it's never been a big industry secret that we have this flick* and its follow up to thank for getting the James Bond producers to just stop and close up shop and rethink their brand. This movie showed their caviar and tuxedo character had to be updated for a more 'modern' world/audience. Years later we would get Casino Royale and of course a lot of comparisons to the Bourne franchise. *Vin Diesel's Triple-X that also came out in 2002 was also the 'final nail in the coffin'; the very opening shot showed a man/spy wearing a tuxedo trying to get away from some baddies. He tries to allude them by hiding in a Rammstein concert. He can be made out a mile away(!). The world had gone and changed all around him. It was funny and sad to watch. You should look up the beginning scene.

By the way, when you get to the Paul Greengrass directed sequels don't fall for the generic hate for "shaky cam" that permeates KZbin. All Paul Greengrass movies are shot with the documentary style "shaky cam" style & he does it excellently. Every action is captured in a frenetic style but Greengrass doesn't do the generic shaky cam movement. You can clearly followe every move of the actors during action scenes. But of course, Hollywood simply decided to ape that shaky cam style without adopting Greengrass's unique technique. Years ago Chris Stuckman did a fantastic video on how shaky cam ruined action movies but he also pointed out that the Bourne movies are the exceptions to that.

So, technically speaking, movies like the Jason Borne trilogy are not actually spy movies. More like action-operator kind of movies. If you really want to watch a true, good spy movie, I suggest "The spy who came in from the cold", based on John Le Carré's novel. Not material for a reaction probably (it's a 1965 movie and I'm not sure how many younger people have watched it) but it's definitely worth the time for people interested in cinema. It's a true spy movie to the extent that it shows the spy game as a completely immoral activity where there are no good or bad guys, only a network of spy agencies with their own objectives and the determination to pursue them mercilessly to the point of treating even their own people as disposable assets. A great insight into the dark world of espionage.

My dad was a huge fan of both the Robert Ludlum novels and these movies, even though they’re wildly different. Honestly, I’m a fan of both as well. And he preferred these movies to the James Bond films because Bourne wasn’t some slick bloke in a tux. These seemed more grounded to him. He passed away between the release of Ultimatum and Legacy, so he missed the last two films in the series, alas. Anyway, happy belated Veterans’ Day to the Mrs. Thank you for your service.

I always loved the 90s europe vibe, its one of those movies that doesnt take place at the usual american places and takes the hole thing to a really underused setting. Part of that is that as a european its always cool to see a bigger production like that in familiar places. The hole thing is also more grounded and isnt over the top like other spy action movies. Its more believable and it feels very real, at least for me

This was so different from the classic book by Robert Ludlum. In that book, he is actually tasked with rooting out Carlos the Jackyl, a world-class assassin for hire, and Marie's character is a renowned economist attending a lecture when they meet. This was a solid movie and Matt Damon was fantastic in the role. But since it was based so loosely on the book, I never understood why they didn't develop an original character and movie instead.
