Ready for another renovation video in the series From Abandoned House To Home? In this video we paint the cabinet doors for the new kitchen, get rid of the very last laminated floor and face our first bigger challenges with some wooden floor that's not in the best condition. I hope that you enjoy!

Just tile the entry way since it’s a wet area and use whatever wood you can save from that parts to replace the wood bits that have holes in them. You can do it!!

Agree. I'd tile the entry. I want to do the same thing in my house. My entry runs straight into my kitchen, so my idea is to have the same tile in both areas. Of course my house is smaller than Elise's.

What I was visualizing was tile in a similar size to the other floorboards. I have seen tile that was a wood pattern, but somehow I think a colour or pattern would be better? If you do any sanding, save the sawdust and either mix with wood putty or a tiny amount of epoxy. Or if you are doing something bright and contrasting by the door, fill in the holes with the same colour epoxy? You will know it when you see it! Maybe try a garbanzo bean blondies with pistachios and chocolate chips if you have a few minutes to bake? I like chopped pecans and coconut in black bean brownies, so now I'm wondering about pistachios in brownies?!

Hi Elise, I am mold expert...please do not attempt to save the moldy floor by the front door! It must be removed, with the door open and while wearing a very high quality mask. You could do a nice tile design in the entry...very common here in the states to do that in entry ways so that peoples wet shoes in winter do not muddy up the rest of the floor. I am also concerned about the big mold spot in the kitchen and I believe there is more in the basement you showed. Ideally this should be handled by a good mold remediation company. The plaster needs to be removed, not spray/ cleaned and/or painted over. And please dont use bleach on mold..,its actually really bad for it...thats why it always grows back worse. Whenever you see mold, it has to be removed and replaced not cleaned! There should be containment put up during any mold removal (like thick plastic hanging around the area, windows open, Hepa air scrubber on). otherwise the mold spores go flying all over the place (you can't see this with the naked eye but they land on other areas and cause mold to grow there eventually). In general once the mold has been taken care of and you are moved in, I would recommend you get a 50 pint or higher dehumifier, one for each floor, to keep humidity levels between 40 and 50%. Anything higher and you can get mold growth just from enviromental moisture. I also highly recommend the company Air Doctors air purifiers. Again one on each floor would be great. This is how you make sure you don't have continual mold issues, as well as ensuring that wherever those orginal leaks came from, you inspect to make sure they are acutally fixed. You wouldn't want to do all these repairs then get the water running and find out theres still issues. Never take the sellers word for it that some water issue has been fixed. Having clean air to breath is so important to our health! Being in this industry I have seen first hand all the determental effects that can happen when someone is living in mold. Hope you guys can prioritize getting the moldy area remediated asap and ideally before you move in. Best of luck!

Didn’t know about the bleach. What do you use to clean it in a bathroom, for example? I live in the subtopics, no extractor or fan in the bathroom, just a tiny window. So it grows on our bathroom ceilings here.

Sweet Elise...my husband and I have remodeled a very large number of homes. The best piece of advice I can give you at this moment is to make a makeshift worktable, out of scrap wood. Just make two saw hoarse and top it with a sheet of plywood. This will allow you to work on your projects at a standing height. Plus, you can move it to the area you are working in so easily that you won't have to bring the work to the table...you can take the table to the work. It will save your back and believe me this is important.

The good part about the front entrance parquetry being moldy is you can think of doing something amazingly creative as an entry welcome to the house. In keeping with the parquetry floor it could be an a mosaic out of different colour woods or use Pinterest again to see entrance floors. Love all your progress and the room looks so wonderful and cozy with your fire going

I would do a victorian tiled entry for the molded area, I think it would work well with your aesthetic, and that way you don't need to worry about mold in the future. Also for the holes, you can either tear out the piece of wood with the hole (since they are so small) and put in a new piece that you salvaged from the damaged areas, or make it an accent piece and get smaller pieces that fit in the grove and stain them darker.

A few suggestions as we renovated our house too a couple of years ago: *use knees padding (unless you don't mind having callous, crocodile skin around your knees😁) *invest in a couple of saw horse that you can use for painting cupboards, doors etc, without breaking your back/knees *use harwear gloves not just because of the paint or chipping nails, but because you actually risk to get splints and chemicals in your hands *you don't need to wash the cupboards before sanding them but you need to wash them afterwards. *they sell some kind of fillers for those holes in the floor in brown colour and you can't see the holes anymore once you have filled them. We have used them too. They work pretty much like those fillers you use for plaster walls but these are specific for wood.

So we tried like 8 different shades of green and FINALLY found the perfect one! And it almost look exactly like the shade you picked, hahaha! Btw just cut out the rotten part of the hallway floor and replace it with some cool tiles. It’s great for wet and muddy shoes. And there is wood filler on tube you can use to fill in the holes. I think the best option would be like a design in front of the door with tiles on the floor and then if you can actually save a few pieces that you remove where you are going to put the tiles you can reuse them and interchange them with the ones that have holes in the other place, I hope you can understand what i mean, that way the wood its the same and would not look weitd if you replace the pieces with holes with completely new wood hahaha lots of love i would totally love to literally go help you do diy renovations at your home just like diy buddies hahaha good luck with the rest of the projects!

It would add a nice contrast, balance and style to them. Maybe a lighter green?! Also for the floor in the entrance, if you can’t fix the holes in the floor maybe you can fill them with something sparkly or beautiful. Like glass?! What a hard worker you are! I like everyone’s ideas about tiling the front of the entry way in decorative tiles and using any wood that is ok to fill your spots where wood is missing. I hope your kitchen has good light from windows so that the green cabinets don’t make it too dark in there. With the right lighting they will be bright and cheery.

Rent a floor sander. You can replace the individual boards, sand and the test out stains that would blend them the best.

Green was my guess! The cabinets are going to gorgeous! If you end up having to redo the floors in the hall, you might be able to salvage some of the parquetry, and keep it, as needed, for repairs and restoration in the living room.

Hey there kiddo, at home depot there's special puddy to fill in the holes, and the front door just let it dry with fan and there's wood protector liquids that you could put. Water may come in cause there's no porch roof. Once you have one, water won't come in anymore. Love your beautiful house.
