Glad you tested this. Bought a BUNCH of this bulk stuff from ammunition depot down in Florida. It was cheaper per round than training FMJ’s. Seems to be a nice score if you’re using a full sized tool or a PCC. Definitely worth it for the range.

LEO ammo tends to be 124 grain 9 mm and fired from full size handguns like the G17 with longer barrels. For compact 9 mm, the 115 grain JHP is the way to go for expansion.

You've got that backward. Lighter bullets lose more velocity in shorter barrels than heavier bullets do.

The projectile looks like a Zero Bullets product but theirs is listed at 125gr. Zero bullets does a large business in selling new manufactured ammo to LE departments and providing re-man loads loaded to the same specs for practice. Even allowing departments credit for returned brass.

I just think since it’s for LE, that they don’t usually carry 3.5” barrels. Usually duty use is 4” or 4.5” so I think it might just be tuned for that.

I agree Tools, ammo has to work regardless of the firearm it's being used in. Not looking to take out 2 people, just the bad guy. Good ammo out of the longer barrel length. Put it where it needs to go & expansion/energy will do the rest. Daughter took out a coyote which had grabbed one of her chickens earlier today. Tool of choice was a model 642 with hollow point. Didnt remember to use the laser lol. Teach them right. 👊🙏👍

They are probably running a slower burning powder to guarantee the expansion in 4.5 and longer barrels that is more prominent in law enforcement.

@@TackJorrance 124gr +p is 1200-1220fps from a 4-4.5" barrel, 1150fps is standard pressure. See specs for Gold Dot 124gr vs +p. 124gr +p typically does 1250-1260fps from a G34 or similar (non beretta) 5" barrel.

@@TackJorrance Not sure if my last replies got through, I think because I added links. But if you youtube 'Federal HST 124gr +P velocity" you will see a video showing 4" testing, average 1212fps. Also if you look up the specs for HST, Gold Dot, they will tell you the same. Berettas chronograph slow, some quirk of the design, they always end up equal or less with the 4" G19.

Agreed, another good test in the books. Duty length barrels are definitely what they worked on. But as you said both barrel lengths should perform though with only a 65fps difference should have at least tried. Good test and commentary. Be safe. 🇺🇸🍉🇺🇸

The problem with these results is that you've got about a 65FPS window to play with to get any expansion. So with the G17 you have a HP up to around 25yds (max) and a 124gr ball after that. That might be good for practice, but for defense that isn't what I'd call acceptable.

That is a respectable velocity for non +P 124 grain and when it expands it isn't horrible. Out of a full size handgun or even a 19 might do okay, but I think I will pass on those leftovers. There are just much better options. For a hollow point i will stick to the newest generation Hexvent Ranger T bullets in +p+ and for a modern bullet i will stick with G9 or Xtreme Defender +p+ (in the Shell Shock cases). If i want to stack dirt cheap 9mm hollow points then i will stick to winchester white box or the AAC 9mm XTP loading.

Those are federal HSTs. I personally run 147 in all my pistols. Expansion tests are nearly identical from micros up through 5" duty guns.

I bought some 124 JHP and it performed really well. My wife loved it also. The thing is, a week after we took it out i was sent an email saying it was subject to recall. I'm not going to trust US Cartidge again. My family could have been injured.

Great test, Brian! I'll admit, most of my 9mm's are relatively short barreled so this stuff wouldn't do me much good. As duty ammo it's ok as long as your barrel is long enough. Such is the way of life! If you're the short barreled type, you need some way to compensate! I don't think this stuff gets the job done! Cheers, jc

They slap "law enforcement" or something on it, and sell it as if you're able to get into an exclusive club through the back door. As was said by others, I'd relegate this for range use, exclusively.

The projectile was not expanding from the 3.1 inch barrel at 1,099 fps but was expanding from the 4.5 inch barrel at 1,164. Two things. that is a big difference is barrel length and NOT a big difference is FPS between the two barrel lengths. I would not trust this ammunition given that the expansion threshold is somewhere in that 65 fps. That is too narrow of a window given that most people are not carrying a 4.5 inch barrel or longer.

If a round can't perform out of a 3 inch, I don't trust it as a defensive round. Such a minimal velocity drop shouldn't affect results so drastically, but I have noticed this is unfortunately common with LEO rounds despite them often using their duty ammo for conceal carry off duty as well. Agreed. I think the standards they use need a little "rethinking" myself. The entire "FBI standard" is nothing but a list of bureaucratic BS that people have been totally conditioned to follow. At this point, it's mainly used by the big manufacturers to get govt contracts/cash.
