@BurlASSque4 жыл бұрын
I love that about the older Mulan movie. She's clever and hardworking. She goes from being useless in training to skilled through hard work and determination and that's why everyone respects her. In the end she's not a badass, she causes the avalanche by being clever and tricks the badguy to win. She never goes out and fights 50 guys that are stronger and have more training and experience, she's far too realistic for that.

They tried to change Mulan for “cultural accuracy” but they made her a superhero, smh. There is no such thing as “chi” in the original legend. Mulan is a legend about a normal girl protecting her family through hard work and perseverance. There is nothing that sets her aside from the rest. After a decade of fighting, the emperor asked her if she wanted power, wealth or fame. She said she just wanted to go home to her family, wear her old clothes and put on rosey makeup. The legend was to show girls that anyone can be Mulan, she isn’t the chosen one, and they can protect their family just as much as a man can so they don’t have to hide behind men’s backs. It shows girls that they can be their own Mulan and she is us. Changing Mulan from an ordinary girl to a superhero was a terrible idea

Two things disappointed me: the exposition and the chi as a superpower. In the beginning of 1998's Mulan Shan Yu is on the Great Wall and the poor solider we all know is going to die bravely lights the warning flame and says, "Now all of China knows your here." To which, Shan Yu responds, "Good". Instant chills. That strong dialogue combined with the atmosphere could have been present for the witch (Xianniang) or Bori Khan attacking the outpost. There were a lot of missed opportunities throughout the film to develop characters. Instead, Mulan's dad is providing exposition over what should have been pivotal emotional scenes. The structure and framework were all there with no payoff.

Just a few bones to pick with their pathetic attempts to be "accurate": 1) Mulan was from Northern Wei. North. She shouldn't be living in a tulou. Those are Hakka buildings. Hakka people live in the South. Like Shanghai. 2) They used the WRONG phoenix myth. Their cringeshot "rise like a phoenix" visual metaphor doesn't work with the Chinese phoenix because the _fenghuang_ has little to do with "rising" or rebirth. It's a symbol of prosperity, happiness, and imperial femininity. The "wife" of the dragon. 3) Their tactics are shit. Just saying. 4) "Qi" doesnt fucking work that way. Even in its most fantastic depictions. Qi is breathing. It's something you supposedly cultivate to grant you superior control over your body and in wuxia films to such an extent that it's borderline magic. That said, it's not something you can just be born with. You cultivate it. You train to get better at using qi to reinforce your physicality. 5) The costumes are an anachronistic mess. Styles from different time periods and different bloody DYNASTIES interact with each other. There are also rules regarding the use of color and symbols for different social classes and this movie doesn't care to learn about them.

Shan Yu was just a fantastic character all around he wasn't just a stereotype that could be summed up in one line from Inigo Montoya. He had intimidation, charisma, and intelligence. His army didn't end up being painted as incompetent by dropping an avalanche on themselves, instead, they were overcome by Mulan's ingenuity and quick thinking. More than that, at the end he simply wanted the Emperor to acknowledge his victory, which really helps characterize him in a way we just didn't get with Bori Khan.

The producers at Disney do not care about culture or feminism for that matter. They cater to a very small (but loud) minority of SJW's that think progression is about giving women superpowers and showing different races on screen, without having them actually do anything meaningful. Its funny that in 1979 we had Alien, which showcased a naturally strong woman, but in 2020 you can't be strong woman unless you were born with special powers...

@fabiofuoco4 жыл бұрын
As much as that would have been better, I think ppl would have still complained about it, and I think a good reason why that is is because it’s nearly impossible to replicate the charm of Animation. See in an animated movie the director has FULL liberty of the characters moves, line delivery, expression, even the world they live in. So it’s pretty clear this new era of Disney is flawed at its base, it’ll never be possible to replicate what their classic were. Period.
@itsjustvin76304 жыл бұрын
@@fabiofuoco then it shouldnt replicate but instead make a better structured story
@miskellaneousK4 жыл бұрын
@@fabiofuoco maybe not necessarily replicate but it should have charm. Aladdin and beauty and the beast are both recent live action adaptations and with whatever faults they might have they did the original justice. With Mulan they tried so hard to please everybody and be "different" that they ended up with a mediocre product. Personally the moment I heard they cancelled General Shan and changed Mushu i knew we were headed for disaster
@lizzymaii44594 жыл бұрын
I agree with you and they could of added a bit more to it maybe how the mom and dad are coping at home worrying about Mulan hoping she is okayy and the ancestors talk about how they wonder if Mulan is saved by the great dragon yet ect... just added a bit more to than before and maybe made a few more things accurate and the woman that voiced Mualn would of been a better option to play her!
