It feels like Blake (or her team) tried really hard to mimic Ryan's marketing strategies while misunderstanding why those strategies work for him. On the surface, integrating your liquor brand is fine; Ryan used multiple movies to promote Aviation Gin. But none of them dealt with domestic violence, which frequently goes hand-in-hand with alcoholism & substance abuse. Even if the abuser in the movie isn't an alcoholic, naming a cocktail after him is extremely tone deaf. We love watching silly joke interviews with Ryan bc they showcase the same charisma & style of comedy we expect to see in his films. But it's so uncomfortable & borderline uncanny to see him do it for a serious film that he's not even in! He's normally so on-point with marketing & promotion that it's surprising he'd even agree to do something like that. All of it feels oddly forced

While in the film, Lily raises Emmy on her own, with Ryle out of the picture, in the original novel, she allows him to coparent unsupervised with her, with her logic being that her own father abused her mother, but never Lily herself. In reality, not all abusers operate the same way, and there's no guarantee that Ryle wouldn't snap or abuse his daughter.

I personally thought the movie was okay, because if you set the cast and the drama aside, it's perfectly (unfortunately) at the middle between romantacising abuse and representing it from the fmc's POV. For those of you who don't know, I'd like to share a few things about Colleen Hoover and this movie plus advertising. So, Colleen Hoover is a romance author, as we all know. She wrote It Ends With Us with the intention of writing a surviver of abuse, which is very noble and a praise worthy act. Until you start reading her other works where their is examples Of the love interests: stocking, manipulating, gas lighting, physically restraining, verbally abusing, infantilizing, objectifing, and controlling the female protagonist but Ryle is the only one that is viewed as being bad because THIS time it is, whereas every single other pair in Colleen Hoover books are soulmates and meant to be. Even Atlas, the guy that saves Lily from Ryle, displays abusive and controlling behaviour, but it's okay because he's not Ryle. Are we understanding this? Colleen Hoover writes Ryle in every single novel, but this time is bad because she said so. And it follows into the marketing of this movie. If you have the knowledge of how Colleen Hoover writes her books, then it shouldn't be surprising that she wants to market this movie as a "cute romcom to bring your friends to and have cocktails later" because she doesn't understand the weight of what she wrote and what was put on screen because if it was any other book, she would market it the same way. This is the woman who shamelessly made a colouring book for It Ends With Us because of the popularity of the book. She is not above treating this as a light-hearted love story.
@milktea95242 ай бұрын
Can we just acknowledge that this also isn’t Colleen Hoover’s only book that romanticizes men hurting women? Because it isn’t. Just the way he said “we shouldn’t ask why she stayed but why men like that hurt others” shows he has a true grasp and respect for Colleen’s story. And also learning of Colleen’s personal history and how this is an affirmation for her mother truly makes it easier to ignore Blake’s foolishness to support the folks around her moving with integrity and good intention. Blake talked too, damn much.

might wanna rethink supporting the movie, colleen allegedly bashed a young girl for coming to her bc her son SAed her

Coleen romanticize and glamorousize dv and abuse in every single book she made, she is NOT an exemple
@breathoffreshair77952 ай бұрын
That statement is literally one explicitly stating “this is a story about glorifying the abusers intent”… like why? There is nothing to learn there , the film glorifies him and keeps her in a mentality of a child- which only further reinforces those already overly normalized toxic norms in our culture in regards to genders.

Colleen Hoover is well known for being superficial regarding genuine issues. A family member was telling me how she trivialises every one of the issues and I didn’t believe them at first… Just wow.

Blake had far too much of a hand in this movie. I feel bad for Justin, because he clearly had a vision. Blake and her husband just hijacked it. At least the younger actors get a big break 🤷♀️ Despite my dislike of her books, Colleen Hoover seems genuine in her love for It Ends With Us.

They should’ve gotten a different actress as lead …. And also the movie itself didn’t feel like a DV movie, it was so mild. Could’ve been so much better !

I feel like the bigger problem with the book was the author saying she watched her mother be abused by her father, then dedicating the book to her father and thanking him for supporting her. The author has issues she clearly hasn't dealt with.

The problem is that these abusive men becomes fathers and then use the family court systems to abuse the women they were obsessed with. The children suffer as the father does not care about the child as much as he cares about harming the woman. #coercivecontrol

Why is Blake acting like her besty Swift wouldn't give her the rights for using her song
@299meena2 ай бұрын
As someone who read the book... That scene of him finding the Atlas number was so frightening. He literally WAITED for her and premeditated his attack before it happened. That part was never hidden. And the way that only way Ryle was able to understand that abuse is bad is because he imagined it happenning to his daughter??? It was PEAK neanderthal energy. The book was horrid and so was this movie. I think if Justin Baldoni was able to make his vision come to life I'm sure it would be much better. :/

As a DV survivor, I'm so glad I didn't want to see this movie because I would have gone into an anxiety attack not knowing wth this was about. Thank goodness I never liked Blake, even as a tween during the Gossip Girl days, which is the main reason I didnt want to see this. Now knowing all the bs and how she is taking this serious topic as a joke and to promote herself is truly disgusting. Makes me so angry and hurt.

My take - movie is actually decent and puts across the message well. Its not perfect or an art piece. But it manages to do what it sets out to do. But blake is just a basic white girl and it comes across in her interviews. She has not faced struggle or abuse it seems, and Im happy for her for that. But shes just a simple pretty girl living her happy life. I dont expect any depth from her. It really doesnt help that every decision in marketing has just been bad when it comes to this movie. It's sad to see her barely speaking about DV while Baldoni made it is main talking point

I grew up with DV (but becoz of schizophrenia and alcohol) in my family - beautiful, teary ending, and truth of the situation why you stay. I too had a mother strong enough to walk away and build a beautiful life raising us. Cut some slack, not all art is perfect, not all stories are perfect, not all personalities are perfect and a lot of times there are disagreements at work. Of course, being mean and rude is not good. Blake was rude at the first part of her question on how to reach her to talk on dv, but did in the end answered the question on dv (which most did not show on their vids tearing into blake).

I remember when photos of shooting were leaked and everyone was criticizing the clothes (very over the top) and Blake lively as the main character because obviously she is a lot older than the character. I think it says a lot that she hijacked a lot of the movie, like the styling, the marketing, the poster, and even the direction of some scenes, thinking she knew best and those are the the parts being criticized the most. And rightly so. But, hey... it has been a financial success, so she won't consider her mistakes or admit to anything. She will say it's all coming from haters.

Well, 50 Shades of Grey got a movie as well and that's not great either (judging by the 5 pages I managed to get through). I haven't read this book, but it doesn't seem amazing either. 50 Shades supposedly romanticised stalking and controlling, this movie romanticises DV.

I have finished reading the book and it brought me back to my childhood when my mom was faced down with my father on top of her and grabbing her by the hair and slamming her face to the ground. It brought me to tears and reflect on how different my life would have been if she hadn't put a stop to it. I am not sure if i want to see the movie if it makes light of the real issue and drama.

Wow... Blake was digging her own grave in each interview. Like, girl, this is not Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. It's unfortunate that they didn't addressed and promote the movie like it should have been, which is DV. Marketing it as a romcom adds to the damage it is doing to our young girls and boys. Hollywood has romanticised toxic relationships for so long that kids think if there's no drama then the relationship isn't worth fighting for. Scary.

Unpopular opinion at this point with the whole drama thing, but Blake was phenomenal. Yes, she might be a diva in real life but if you watch the whole movie, you maybe understand why she promoted the film the way she did. All of the cast and Justin were amazing. My heart was beating the whole time and I cried multiple times. It was so empowering.

This story won’t resonate with women and girls who have found themselves in abusive relationships and gone through sheer trauma trying to get out of them. One such is my daughter who went through all the stages with a nut-job boyfriend. Thank god we were able to support her against him and see him off, but it was a scary couple of years. From this review it seems that the Rile (sp?) character changes when in reality they don’t change. They can’t. They just eventually move onto the next victim. It doesn’t help that with regard to the film, it would be hard to see Blake Lively as a sweet girl when we now know she isn’t. Far from it.

I cannot lie I was really excited about this movie as I was a huge fan of the books. However, the movie felt like it cheapened the DV to stay PG 16. Don't get me wrong if anyone is in a situation wherein they are in an abusive relationship. Go and don't stay with the person as they don't deserve you. But in the context of the movie, it felt like a whole lot of nothing. I left feeling nothing and not even excited about the 2nd one if it ever does come out.
