Tip for Ian: It seems like that whether or not Isma does the vine whip or acid throw attack is based on your position in relation to her. When you’re directly below her, she throws the acid. If you’re further away, she does the vine whip.

Y’know what these bosses are missing? THE BIG SCREAM that the Hollow Knight bosses in the base game often do during their introduction and before their next phase. It just doesn’t feel right without them.

They just did it Grimm-stile, Dryya Isma and Zemer do their bow, Hegemol immediately starts with unique introduction attacks. Screams are mostly done by infected bosses

After thinking about it more, the lack of THE BIG SCREAM isn’t what they’re missing. They’re missing a big introduction of some kind. THE BIG SCREAM is just a common big introduction. For example Grimm has dialogue right before the battle, snaps his fingers to switch on the lights, and THEN bows to you. The Mantis Lords stand up in their thrones and slam down huge walls next to you. Even False Knight falls from the ceiling and lands with a big slam. The Great Knights kinda just quietly show up.

To answner your question, yes these fights are supposed to be about the difficulty of white defender or a bit harder. Which is honestly pretty balanced compared to other HK boss mods.

As a game dev, Isma looked fair and extremely well made. It was just so much to keep track of that realizing what you're doing wrong in the moment is difficult, but watching it seemed pretty clear. Draya could use a bit more telegraphing, but it still looks fair. Hegemol's debris and the upswing are pretty bad. I have personal struggled with prioritizing gameplay over thematics. Also, I dislike heavy contact damage. I don't have Hollow Knight on Steam, but this is really making me want to buy it again

this is also a good setup for a glowing womb build as well, since the weavers will collect SOUL which will spawn the hatchlings just never uses defender's crest, the damage of the hatchlings just seems to be decreased

I thought Dryya actually telegraphed all attacks well. The telegraphs are *short*, but every different move has a different pose beforehand.

My current issue with Dryya, which I'll need to see is true to the other bosses in Vanilla HK, she had a few moves where she'd essentially... Cancel them? Into doing a different move. Instead of a 3-slash, sometimes she'd do 2 slashes, IMMEDIATELY into a different move. I don't remember many other bosses having this mechanic. And while new mechanics are fine! I don't think it's as well implemented as many of the Vanilla HK mechanics are. That said, it definitely gets easier with time, and I wish I watched a bit of what I said this video!

If anything the only new mechanic would be the counter but you did amazing against that. Raging is apart of the process, im suprised you havent played cuphead or its dlc yet. Also what in the world was that gray mourner fight lol. I cant even decipher what the phases even were

The reason the White Lady is wrapped in bandages is so she doesn’t leave to… breed. It makes sense though once you consider how she made so many vessels for Pale King. This info may not be correct since it’s been forever since I read the lore but I believe that’s the reason.

It's great to see you playing this game, not only because you have great commentary and entertaining gameplay, but also because you can complain about things being bullshit again when they aren't! Though of course I mean that in good fun. You guys are on fire! 17:31 : Saying that Isma's acid attack is impossible to react to is a little unfair. It holds the acid bubbles on her vine for a whole half second before she fires. and she fires it in three straight lines with the middle one always aimed at the player (Think the primal aspids), and they fall to the ground if they hit a wall. Now then again, there is a lot to focus on with Isma's battlefield, with her spawning plants and making the arena smaller. I'm sure you'll figure out it's less nonsensical later. 33:00 : I do agree more with that sentiment with Dryya, though. She seems like her whole gimmick is that she *doesn't* let up at all. I wonder if the lifeblood charms might be good for it, allowing for extra hits without worrying about healing, or like Casey suggested, having babies there for extra damage without needing to be in range of her. Also, when she goes in her second phase, I see she alternates between going on the ground and charging towards, and leaping diagonally towards, then she vanishes for a second and goes down in a Z pattern. One going up and one going down. Hope that helps. 34:39: Also, no, the final boss doesn't have a stagger, unless you are talking specifically about The Hollow Knight and The Pure Vessel. Neither Radiance staggers. I definitely feel like most of this criticism is inexperience talking, so I am curious how that'll change with you continuing through this. 36:10 : Now, like the last time Ian suggested this, will he just win immediately, forever denying Casey the babies? Also, it was the grubsong that gave you soul with the weavers, not the soul catcher. Edit: Thankfully not! 36:33 : That's cute and hilarious! 39:28 : Also, I am very happy the new defender charm still synergizes with the glowing womb! I was especially worried that it might not and make you hate the baby build. 42:20 : Not at all, that is just good game sense. 45:40 : When he slows down and drags his mace on the ground, he's going to throw debris into the air which rain down, and a small shockwave across it. His charge is fast, and he makes a shockwave when he lands after bouncing off the wall. His flourish has a hitbox when the fight begins. Also he might just be angry because his cool intro was fogged up by exploding children. 45:50 : ... Ian, are you okay? Are you overworked? I have never seen you get so mad at something so quickly. 49:01 : He got hit by a baby, that's why the stagger ended super quickly. Every other stagger does that. Weaversong, Chiptune, Glowing Womb, and Shield all do that, thought I think you can actually not trigger it using the Defender's Crest or the Mushroom charm to get extra damage. 49:30 : I am very happy you realized what it was, though! Many youtubers would just stew in hatred and not think anything was their fault. Another reason I love you guys playing this, you don't go to 'game bad' that often, and when you do you often retract and think on whether it was or not. 54:50 : Well done on powering through that fight even with Baby build though! I would have thought you would have given up and used a different set... especially considering your experience with Lost Kin. XD I look forward to more, you guys! Keep being awesome!

Wanted to respond to this, mostly for the response of 45:50 to say, I was a bit more stressed than usual because Casey was going out of town in about 6 hours as of time of recording this, and I think that affected my mood a bit for the recording. I regret a fair amount of how I said things, but I still wanted to put out our initial reaction. After Part 2, I'm going to want to stream everything, where I hope to get out some more well adjusted thoughts. Other than that, here's a few other responses! 17:31 Now that I know there's a bit of a mechanic to it (If you move under her during her whip windup, it'll transform into the acid bubble), it's easier to understand, but I don't know if I like it as a mechanic. Definitely difficult though! 33:00 Dryya has gotten a bit easier, now that I've played her a few times. There's a few things I wish were different (Her projectile, and the fact she can almost... Cancel her attacks, and start a brand new a attack randomly sometimes?), but she's okay! She's not the dance that I really enjoy from rushdown bosses like Pure Vessel and Mantis Lords, but still decent. Probably 3rd fav of the 4! 34:39 While no stagger, being able to fully heal after the 1st phase is monumental imo (and I had considered it a stagger, even though it 100% is not lmao) 45:40 Once you memorize his stuff, it's easier to tell where it's going to be, though I do think the projectiles blending into the background (esp since some randomly fall from the ceiling too) is a bit of an oversight, and could be made better if they stood out more. That was one thing nice about the Failed Champion having bright orange on the projectiles, very clear to see them. Thanks for enjoying the video despite my whining! And I hope this could clear up some stuff from me, now that I'm calmer lmao

You can place dreamgates before boss fights which will let you instantly teleport back to the boss from the bench, so no bench is necessary in Isma's grove.

the fact that King's Honour is just the Defender's Crest, but bathed in acid to clean it...sort of implies that Ogrim refuses to go near any acid, or even the grove since his armour is the same colour as his crest...thus, if he bathes in acid, then he'd become the white defender...but he refuses to, as he does not wish to bother Isma in her grove...despite not knowing of her death (and I also wish that the King's Honour made the hatchlings into Pale Explosive hatchlings, to keep the synergy) also...I find it interesting that Hegemol uses a mace...when we have no idea if he actually used a mace in the first place, as his silhouette in white defender does not have a mace and neither does his statue at the gates to the city...and we know that the False Knight's mace was a false mace and...love the charm designs, since they're white look both evokes the image of the pale king & white lady, but also...adds to the idea that each charm was formed from essence

Omg this is so awesome! I'm still waiting to be able to this myself so I just wanted to drop by and say Omg I can't believe Ian still has the compass on. Oh and so interesting, so Isma was a lot more of a far away fighter with minions and stuff which I guess would fit her "Kind" demeanor meanwhile Dryaa is a more aggressive close fight which indeed fits with Fierce but also she fights in a similar manner to the Pure Vessel/Hornet. (I also just realized Ismas vine attacks work similar to the PV void tendrils too)

Right. No spoilers, but I'd recommend you go to Godhome and check out Dung Defender's pedestal in the Hall of Gods, and also practise more with the Mark of Purity charm. While you're there, be aware of the other pedestals in the Hall, as one of them seems to have changed... One more thing, there's also something new in the Abyss: it's that last charm you're missing.

The Five Great Knights are not done with you yet. Head to Godhome and go to the White Defender's statue in the Hall of Gods. There you will be given the choice to "answer the call".

I'd heard about this, but having lost all my save files a few years ago has made me not really up to returning to the game. Interested to see what it's like! Ooh, new title screen music for the mod! Okay, this Isma fight is really really cool. As far as the vines versus the acid, it seems like the acid only happens when you're close to her? Like, it might be a reaction to you being that close, and otherwise she throws a vine. I'll have to pay closer attention to be sure. Seeing as regular Glowing Womb + Defender's Crest makes the babies go explode themselves, this upgraded version might actually work out well! Casey's baby build suggestion could be a good one. Dryya feels VERY Pure Vessel, though minus the teleport obviously, and with a few other tweaks. Like, she has the quick triple slash, the dash attack, a down slam, a parry, and a semi-random arc of projectiles. Oh, now she has a teleport, too. Come to think of it, White Defender didn't have a stagger, either, so I guess they went off of that with this mod. Not sure I completely agree, since WD had brief moments of downtime while he was digging or when you're just dealing with the dung balls, but these fights seem to be more nonstop assault. BABY BUILD FTW!!!! Oh wow, the background for Hegemol's fight is SO good! And agreed that there's too much of the same colors going on here. I'm wondering what sort of dreamnail dialogue these fights have, and when an opportunity to do so would even happen. Isma, you could maybe sneak one in during the bow at the start, absolutely no clue for Dryya, and Hegemol maybe when he staggers. Huh, it seems like whatever music was supposed to be for the Ze'mer fight broke. Oh well =( These charms are really cool! Mini-Pure Vessel! Excited for the next part of this!

jsyk, you can put a bench down wherever you are with the benchwarp mod so that would be easier to use if you wanna change your charm set up etc. Isma is one of the hardest bosses and beating her in 11 tries is extremely good. These are supposed to be the knights at the top of their game so they should be good, and of course with all the modded bosses that have come out they wouldnt want to make it too easy. It's not a mod for people who're just starting out in hollow knight that's for sure. I think it's very cool to see how they incorporated some of Pure Vessel's moveset because obviously the 5 knights would help train it.
