VIVIAN! MY GIRL! Okay, story time. The Thousand Year Door was my childhood game, I played it back and forth over and over, and she was always my favorite partner without fail. (Second place went to Bobbery.) I learn that in the original version she was intended to be a transgender woman in the original Japanese localization and think 'oh neat!' because I was first learning about trans people. Cut twenty years later and I'm a transgender woman, and Vivian's localized dialogue in English is changed to make her being transgender FAR more obvious. "It's just, it makes me really happy when you call me your sister, so..." Vivian is without fail the #1 reason I'm following anyone's playthroughs of TTYD. I love her so much and seeing her makes me happy.

Poor Toadsworth =( When it comes to the update, I remember spotting a random youtube video about a certain character having the potential to crash the game, so maybe it was a fix to that? Boggly Woods continues be be stunningly beautiful. You know, Beldam might have been the first time teen me encountered that kind of gaslighting? She is just so incredibly awful if you actually pay attention to what she's doing. Hmm, not sure I like the Boggly Woods version of the battle music. It feels sort of all over the place and hard to follow. You when you... get a heart in Paper Mario? This means Ian need to make that sound every time an audience member throws a heart. Casey manages to nail the Flurrie voice before even seeing her! Seriously, you've been spot-on doing that this game. SO glad to see the changes to how the translation handles Vivan already. In a game full of great characters, she's the best. I feel like the fact that teen me had no particular thoughts about Flurrie's design was one of the overlooked signs I'm ace.

39:50 So Sleep Stomp (and other methods of putting enemies to sleep) are *EXTREMELY* broken in the remake. In the original TTYD, sleep effects could be broken through attacks, but in the remake, this only applies to Mario and his partners: enemies that are asleep can only be awoken by specific effects/attacks, and most attacks won't disrupt sleep. So Sleepy Stomp is basically a very cheap way to stunlock enemies for up to 5 turns at a time. I have absolutely no idea why they changed this in the remake, but I guess Sleepy Stomp basically adds an "Easy/Story" mode to the game.

9:30 Unfortunate that your very first use of Fire Drive was against enemies that are immune to fire, because against normal enemies Fire Drive is CRAZY powerful. That FP cost isn't lying to you, it's easily the most powerful move in the game until you start using the more cheesy strats (i.e. lots of Power Plus into Multihit attacks) 13:40 Aaaaand then the next use was a total whiff. 😅

I personally recommend practicing any moves you get with the battle master because some of the timings are weird. Especially the fire drive move, I think the timing is to hit it when it hits the ground rather than in front of Mario. EDIT: Looks like you got the timing down now but I still think practicing new badges/special moves is a very helpful way to not waste resources. (especially as they get more expensive) A good amount of the localization around Vivian has changed from the Gamecube version. In the original version she calls their group the Three Shadow Beauties and Beldam corrects her to the Three Shadow Sirens. However now it is closer to the original Japanese script. (although handled a bit more tactfully)

Some trivia on the Shadow Sisters’ scenes today: It’s pretty widely known that Beldam’s first scene of transphobia at 37:03 in the GCN’s JP version, though that didn’t make it to English. What I find interesting, however, is how the remake altered this scene. Instead of rejecting Vivian’s name out of transphobia, Beldam instead discredits it due to “not evoking mystery”. I unfortunately have not been able to check the JP version to verify that she says the same there, but since it’s the exact same across the FRE and SPA versions as well, it seems most likely to me. That change on its own, while likely the safest option for the devs, would erase Vivian’s identity from the scene…which is why they *added* Vivian’s line about Beldam calling her “sister”. Seriously, check The Cutting Room Floor for the GCN’s version, that bit was straight-up not there. …TLDR: They reworked the scene to remove Beldam’s transphobic remarks while also retaining her identity.

Day 52 of reminding everyone Ian drank Casey’s chocolate milk. So like… on a previous post we had the paper liquids discussion, so now there’s another Paper Mario question to be posed. How does fire work? In every game, the only fire that’s papery are enemies made of fire. Even fire flowers are kept pretty realistic. But in very few (if any) games are fire attacks an insta kill. Is everyone made of fireproof paper? Or is paper in this world non lethal? It can’t be non lethal because in Color Splash, enemies killed by fire flowers are reduced to ash. So what???

Well it was their actual Japanese name. It’s “the 3 shadows” in its original form, and then changed to “Shadow sirens” in English… despite them not doing anything related to Sirens.
