I know Ryan is a big fan of 24fps, but I came across this on Reddit, which seems to be inline with my own feeling that I could never tell the difference between 24/30 in the motion blur department: "Just to add to this, from the Hero 8 all the cameras use a single clock rate sensor. This is why the lowest shutter speed is 1/30 as the sensor is running at 30hz. To get 24fps the camera is just performing a frame rate pull down on the recorded file so there is no advantage to the lower frame rate. The older cameras could be set to PAL (25fps) and get a lower shutter speed."

I agree with the 9 being a very frustrating camera with glitches, sd card corruption, and sound. When it's working well it produces incredible results for sure and it's impressive to see that in such a small durable package but I swear at this one more than all the previous models I've owned. Having to buy recovery software due to corrupted files or shots that glitched is not an expense I planned. As a channel that makes multi day adventures, it was a neccessary purchase to connect a specific timeline for the viewers. Hoping they fixed this on the 10 with the new GP2 but I'm hesitant to spend again. Great review been following Loam Ranger since its inception. Diggin' the new one.

I did not see a big enough improvement to warrant replacing my 9 with a 10. But I do think GoPro is moving in the right direction. Maybe I’ll take the same approach as I have with my iPhone - upgrade it every other year. 😂

Worried about battery life. Trekking for five months in Nepal often far from electricity. How do we optimize battery life??
@runthejoules Жыл бұрын
I'd recommend the Enduro batteries from GoPro in this case. Bring as many as you can, or bring a decent sized battery bank to plug into. Film in the lowest resolution and frame rate you're comfortable with. Higher frame rates really chew through battery life, in my experience. Have a great trip!

@KevGoesRiding3 жыл бұрын
i agree with this btw. I dont like post processing my files but i have to choice because leaving sharpening in medium just looks too digital still, so i am forced to shoot in low sharpening and add a little sharpening later on
@runthejoules3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Not sure why GoPro does this to such a heavy extent. It’s to the point where there’s so much sharpening that it’s starting to break down the image.
@midlifeshredder3 жыл бұрын
But would you spend the money to upgrade from the 9 to the 10? I'm not convinced until I see what resolutions and frame rates are offered when they adapt the lens mod in November. Since it's the same size sensor I would bet the increase, if any, will not be substantial from the current 2.7k on the 9. Thoughts?
@runthejoules3 жыл бұрын
If your 9 is solid and you won’t use the new features, may as well stick with the one you’ve got. From what I know, GoPro will not be adding a higher resolution option for the Max Lens, but things could always change.

Nice test. I'm surprised that you had trouble keeping footage from the two cameras apart. The local tone mapping/local contrast enhancement on the 10 seems to be quite clearly visible to me. Whether it makes things better or not is subjective of course. What would have been interesting to see is how it performs at higher sensitivities than ISO 1600. At least from my perspective a bit more noise is often the lesser evil than the motion blur due to vibrations at slower shutter speeds (which the digital stabilization can't deal with). So I tend to push it farther there.
@runthejoules3 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting about the tone mapping part. Looking at clips from both cameras, side by side using scopes in Davinci Resolve shows essentially identical contrast/luminance. I spent a while staring at those scopes like a madman trying to find a situation where the two cameras would differ, but it never happened. 🤷🏻♂️
@veers0r3 жыл бұрын
@@runthejoules Since it's local tone mapping the effects on the scope probably aren't going to be that big, it's more or less like trying to see sharpening in the scopes (but with a bigger radius). Could also be that it was less obvious in your footage because GoPro might have coupled it to the sharpening setting which was on low but that's pure speculation. Didn't get my hands on one so far so I'm just going on the full res videos people have shared so far. :)

Hey guys. I’m considering getting my first go pro soon to mainly film my mountain biking. I have no intention on creating “pro” videos at all, just personal use. I ride the same trails that you do and was wondering what camera you would suggest. Also I believe in a previous video you said that a chest mount is better than a helmet mount. Would the chest mount that go pro sells do the job, or is there one that provides more stability that doesn’t cost a fortune? Thanks and keep up the great content on both channels!
@4KMTBRider3 жыл бұрын
You can't go wrong with either the Hero 8,9 or 10 but the 9/10 have a larger battery over the 8. the 8 is more compact and less wait which is ideal for mounting to a helmet. The Gopro chesty mount (padded version) is what most mtb riders use including myself and it is very good but not perfect. If you have a waterproof jacket on for example, the chest mount can slide around and cause the Gopro to have a hard time stabilising the video. Hope that's some use to you!

Appears the 10 is $100+ more than the 9 was last year. Do you think that price hike is justified? I have the 9 but am putting money aside to purchase the 10 in the next few months. Really like the content of your new channel.

I Just think of the 8,9,10 as the White,Silver, and Black and when every new gopro comes out the New One becomes the {Black} and the previous takes the next space Dont know why Gopro Stoped making White & Silver Levels but i guess with the annual Cameras now it makes sense the way ive been thinking about it Even if i just upgraded to a 10 from a Hero 4 Black edition.

The HERO10 produces more detail. You'll need to look at your original footage, but you should notice the H10 producing more detail in grass and gravel detail while in motion than the H9. Another notable thing is that if you put the cameras in a 16:9 mode (not inc Superview) such as 5.3K on the H10 and 5K on the H9, with both set to Hypersmooth Boost, you'll see that the H10 has a wider FOV.
@runthejoules3 жыл бұрын
As far as detail while in motion, given both cameras have the same lens and sensor, the only differentiating factor would be shutter speed. If the 10 leans towards faster shutter speeds than the 9, then you’d see more sharp detail while in motion, but I wouldn’t say that’s a bonus for the 10. Looking at the footage on my calibrated, 5k monitor, I don’t see that difference either way. I’ll have to check out that field of view difference you mentioned! The wide the crop, the better, as long as the stabilization is just as good, so I’m into that! Cheers - Ryan
@simonwyndham3 жыл бұрын
@@runthejoules Thanks for the reply! The detail difference is definitely there. If you shot some grass for example, detail is reproduced much better on the H10, and I think it's down to the compression system. Files off the 10 seem more efficient, and I think it's doing a better job of dealing with the detail. I noticed that on a side by side test the H9 files were often larger despite not containing quite as much detail. I've noticed areas of image on mine (viewed on a 32" 4K reference grading monitor) where the H9 smooths out and 'mushes' the detail, while the H10 shows fine detail, and it's definitely not due to shutter speed. Regarding the FOV, remember when testing it that the extra FOV is only in 16:9 modes (not Superview since that is at heart a stretched 4:3 mode). It's due to the camera using a wider sensor area than the H9, so it doesn't need to crop in as much for the HyperSmooth margin as the 10. I have an example of the extra FOV I my own review, but I won't hijack your channel to link to that! On that note, great new channel BTW!

Couple of questions or may be in your next review of 10 you can cover these… 1. Have you tried continuous recording for over 20m while riding with higher FPS (may be even a timewrap)? Coz I’m hearing it auto shuts down due to overheating 2. I have seen your colour grading videos of the past, does it still apply if you use the Natural colour option of the 10?

Not ignoring it. It's just not actually relevant to normal use, IMO. If you film in your house at 5.3K for long periods of time without moving the camera at all to create any kind of airflow, I guess you would care about the one or two people reporting the overheating issue... but I don't know of one single person who would do that, so. **shrugging shoulders emoji** - Ryan
