▼Part2: Why You Give Your Head Away to Your Opponent▼
• Why You Give Your Head...
Every Iai and Kenjutsu Ryuha style has its own Kamae stances. But because our Ryuha, Asayama Ichiden Ryu, has 400 years of history since the end of the Sengoku War period, there are 16 kinds with the basics alone. Many of which involve techniques born of the assumption of wearing samurai armor.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Asayama Ichiden Ryu, will introduce the 16 basic stances separated into 5 categories. Many stances are unique to our Ryuha that absolutely need an explanation to understand what it’s meant for, so please watch till the end to learn more about what fighting with a katana in armor is like.
*The content of our videos is based on the teachings of Asayama Ichiden Ryu and personal studies/experience | There is no intention of denying other Ryuha styles, theories, and cultural aspects

As a 6'5" Jodan player in Kendo, i feel a strong connection to the kamae of fire. Between katate and morote waza, you gain the ability to disrupt your opponents spacing, and hit him in the gaps in his defence.

The previous time I drew parrallels with european 15th century stances, and here it continues: In German Liechtenaurian tradition the Shin-no-Seigan (does that mean guard of death?) is called Pflug (plow)... Even the feet placement is the same. Hira Seigan looks like Longpoint (Langhort), but with a few key differences: since a two-handed longsword has two edges and has a different shape and guard the hand position differs. But keeping the hands loose is the case too. The main difference is that it's not about measuring distance, but forcing your opponent to attack your blade before he comes close enough to attack you. This is reminescend of how Seki Sensei stressed that it is advantageous to let your opponent start moving before you do in a previous video. Migi Jodan and Dai Jodan are guards, but your explanation about them reminded me of named attacks: according to your explanation it sounds like Migi Jodan is made to lead into a diagonal downwards cut (oberhau in old german, litterally "over-strike"), while the Dai Jodan is made to lead into a vertical flinging cut we name scheitelhau (Germ.: crown strike), which is interesting: Do all guards have one assigned attack? If yes, is it incorporated in your Budo to use the "signature attack" of a guard from the wrong guard in order to surprise your opponent? (asking this because in Liechtenaurian tradition both Migi Jodan and Dai Jodan would be called a Von Tag (from the roof) guard, which is (most of the time) placed on the shoulder, but can also be held above your head. There are also other upper guards, like the einhorn (unicorn) which looks like the Dai Jodan, but with the sword tilted diagonally forwards, or the ox, and so on)
@RoninTF2011
@RoninTF2011 Жыл бұрын
Well, hand and blade positioning is slightly different for the "plow", and you want to use the Gehilz(crossguard) and the blade to cover your openings...something the katana can not offer
@scariuslvl9987
@scariuslvl9987 Жыл бұрын
@@RoninTF2011 sure! there are nuances, after all the shape of the weapon does massively impact the use you make of it. The crossguard does indeed offer considerable protection. That said, I'm fairly certain that the blade of a katana can offer cover for your openings just as well as any similarly sized blade.

The kanji for seigan is composed of sei (正, “correct, justice, righteous”) and gan (眼, “eyeball”). It's the guard where you point your weapon at your opponents eye.

@@scariuslvl9987 I am unfamiliar with shin as used in shin-no-seigan, because it can mean a few things depending on the kanji, however I believe that in this case it means "true" seigan.

I recognize some overlap with European sword styles. I saw, in order longpoint, fool's guard, and roof guard. A crossover episode with European sword KZbinrs like Shadiversity or Skullagrim would be enlightening.

The loose grip and direction-switching seems like it would be a great answer to Shad's point or longswords being able to do reverse cuts, while curved swords seem to only accomodate sweeping strikes

Checking measure by using the sword tip covering the foot is seriously the most ingenious thing I've learned on all of sword youtube. I practice and spar HEMA multiple times a week and I'm going to check this one out using Longsword and Rapier. My prediction is that it's a universal sword tip. Thanks MASSIVELY.

@@mr.kennedyt7351 It worked well for longsword. Rapier it's a bit more complicated. It depends on the particular style being applied. Fabris for example, doesn't work well, capo ferro it works well, then styles like Thibault kinda works, but you view measure differently.

i noticed that at the end of the stances part of the video, Seki Sensei had sheathed his sword but was keeping his peripheral vision on the camera person. i wonder if this was from the concept of keeping combat ready at all times or possibly for the safety of the camera person? or possibly something else. i absolutely loved the video 💜 great work.
