Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing. 🗡Join the Online Iaido Training with Seki Sensei🗡 Sign Up Here (One Lesson FREE): www.patreon.com/sekisenseiiaidotraining Interested in taking Iaido lessons directly from the 8th Dan Iaido Master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shinden Ryu, Seki sensei? I was wandering about this for a long time, maybe because of my European background: In HEMA we start with drawn weapons, so drawing is not a focus of the discipline. But starting with sheathed weapons is a useful and more wholistic approach. With the partner training demonstrated by Seki Sensei, when attacked a fast response is very important. So I am wondering if Kenjutsu training goes as far as also training the reading of a situation in a correct and fast way. In my interpretation this would be a very useful skill to train. Whenever you draw a weapon you want to be sure that you are actually being attacked, right?

Kenjutsu from my understanding is the combat-oriented part. Reading the situation would be up to individual discretion, but once the other individual initiates an attack, your response should be using the techniques/skills you practiced. And from what I've seen in these videos, he never draws first, only in defense/retaliation.

The art you are referring to is iaido, not kenjutsu. Kenjutsu needs to be trained in tandem to be a competent Japanese swordsman, but iaido specifically focuses on the art of drawing the sword and cutting from the draw, as well as situational awareness known as zanshin. I train in mugai ryu which is a koryu (old school martial art) emphasizing iaido but has a significant proportion of kenjutsu forms

Hello, I have a few questions. Sorry for being presumptuous. The way you sheath the katana, is it your habit to sheath from the side, and pull back to the hip? Is this a habit from Iaido? Does the tip of your katana find the mouth of the saya, as it is horizontal, or as it is vertical? Thank you for your consideration.

for what purpose is the foot put forward first, and only then is the weapon struck? after all, if the enemy is ready to attack, then the weapon comes first, and the foot is put in the wake.
