I buy/sell on Marketplace often. Never ran into any issues, probably because as soon as I notice a red flag I stop communication/block/gtfo. The number of people that ignore red flags and then swear off Marketplace altogether as if the mere existence of it is the reason they found themselves in trouble is just silly to me.

Exactly! FBMP is not the only place scary situations can occur. It was that way with Craigslist in the early 2000s, where everyone was saying how dangerous it was. It still exists and thrives without any major issues. It is the responsibility of the people who use a site to be watchful for their own safety. Anywhere can be dangerous, whether it's online or in your own driveway. 😔

I agree, most of the people are genuine. I have a few trying to scam me, but it's always the same messages/schemes, so I recognise and never had a problem. They are going more and more numerous, that's annoying. Other than that, I'm really happy that these second hand markets exist.

Well, for my internship, I have to go to people's houses every day. I work in a public housing company as a social worker. The whole job happens at people's homes. Neither me, my advisor and colleagues ever had any issues, as most people are genuine. Even if they aren't, they would have more to loose if they ever do something, as everyone in the service know that I go to their address. But maybe I will have my own horror story to share one day

Same here. When I contact sellers to set a time & meet up place, I tell them right away that I dont do transactions at night nor will I ever go inside a home. Also I google the address once the seller gives it to me; if it looks sketchy in the google photo (like a lonely alley), I cancel.

Common sense isn't common. Naïve people who've lived a charmed life are dumb enough to believe "most people are good," so they're the ones who'd go into an empty house alone.

Exactly. I don't understand how ppl get themselves into these situations. I will admit I have gone into people's houses to try clothes on. But only after we met, and my husband was outside. And it was another woman, and she wasn't creepy or weird. Not to say something couldn't have happened but dang, some ppl are way too trusting.

The camera story: The fact a professional quality camera plus microphone was listed for $100 should've been red flag enough. Used or not, even without a microphone, $100 should've been a dead giveaway. Either she was super naive or didn't actually use professional grade equipment for her business.

@SuperNostalgia.ou are aware that you’re undermining your own message and greatly decreasing the amount of positive responses to your message by imposing on and interrupting people minding their own business, right? In no way am I disagreeing with said message, but being rude like this is not going to help you or anyone else, most of all the religion you claim to speak for. Especially when you think about how hypocritical it is to preach a message against sin, while committing them :/ that’s a big part of what actually turns people against faith, which wouldn’t happen if more people just took a second to be more polite, as we are taught to do in faith. Pride is not only a sin, but one of the seven deadly sins, not to mention when you add hypocrisy to that equation… blessed be, and peace be with you, but worry more about your own faith, devotion to God, and repentance and penance than committing one of the worst sins there are, for no reason other than that sin itself: pride.

I agree. People on the spectrum often have trouble making friends and don't understand what is and isn't socially acceptable. My son has Asperger's and I have two friends with it along with many other family and friends on the spectrum. I have taught myself to look past the odd and sometimes downright uncomfortably awkward things that go on when we go out as a group. It is so hard for these people as it is so I go out of my way to befriend them and listen to them even when what I'm listening to makes no sense or sounds incredibly strange. Mentally these people are geniuses but socially they really have no clue. Once you learn to overcome and look past the social bits you will discover some amazing people hiding within. Everyone on the spectrum that I know is amazing, smart, and intuitive. Not only that but they truly appreciate kindness and love and give you the same in return. Personally, in this situation, I would have researched the guy thoroughly on Facebook and Google to learn who he is and what he is about. If it turned out he was a lonely person on the spectrum I would have taken him up on the offer and met him at the next concert!! Why not? Make his life a little happier and maybe make a lifelong friend for yourself!! What's wrong with that? I run an Asperger's site and I thoroughly check everyone out before befriending them to make sure they are just on the spectrum and not some serial killer crazy person. If they are on the spectrum, when they are ready for it, we meet in person in a public place not too incredibly crowded and take it from there. One step at a time. Baby steps if you will!! I'm sad this guy and his wife didn't look into Victor a lot more and find out about him. They may have missed the opportunity to have a loyal and dedicated friend!
@miss-nomer
@miss-nomer 9 ай бұрын
I’m surprised they didn’t call the cops after he tracked them down and went to their house at night. If Victor was just on the spectrum or something, at least that might have lead to him getting some help.

These stories are the reason I haven't tried to sell any of my baby's stuff. Not worth the risk considering women have died over used baby stuff. Oh yeah and story 6 is another gem. "My crazy ex threatened me, lured me somewhere, and tried to kill me. So I decided not to press charges and also pay her medical bills." Smh. Honestly I don't care for this guy's sake. If he has no issue with someone trying to kill him, whatever, but he's making the world more dangerous for me and everyone else. He's trying to portray himself as such a nice guy but he's not. If he had prevented a male stalker or attempted murderer from going to jail everyone would be going after him for it, and rightfully so. Also what about the confused old woman who's house she broke into? I guess her pain is also just collateral for your adorably quirky toxic relationship. How cute!

Joel for narrating stories … and John Ballen for his story telling ability , also coffee house crime , that kid is like a protege for both, nice soothing voice for narrating, but his skills for visual story telling is growing .. so I guess those are the 3, out of dozens and dozens

Joel, I absolutely LOVE your videos! Not only is your content great, but your voice is so relaxing!! You are the best narrator! As far as FB Marketplace, you have to be aware of red flags. Just be smart about where you meet & who you meet: always meet in public places, don't go into someone's home alone (like if you're picking up furniture), don't give your address out if you can avoid it, avoid meeting people late at night, listen to your gut & always check their profile to see if they've been on FB for a few years and it's a real profile. I've sold and bought off marketplace for years. Luckily, I've never been in a crazy situation; but I have had to block a few people because there were red flags.

Guy in Story 6 was the true definition of a simp, not the common misuse of the word. Staying chained to a controlling, toxic partner for a decade, giving her all his stuff, not pressing charges when she would have, if possible, taken his life, and then, on top of everything, paying her bills thereafter. Some people are made to be victims. It's a simple as that.

Overlooking that the story's probably fake, you'll find a lot of these narrators are simps. I think back to one about "Breaking up a domestic violence situation, boyfriend ends up holding me down, his girlfriend smashes a bottle against my head, I don't press charges." But honestly...is it any surprise that the weak willed are always in danger by their own hands?

He had a near damn same upload schedule and i was in love with his content until i realized an embarrassing long time later that it was AI. The way i found out was that he repeated the intro twice in one sentence sometimes and would repeat the same stories about 3 times in the same video. When i found Lets Read, i was fully convinced Joel wasnt real either until i heard him talk normally and mess up his words while reading. Wouldn't WayBackMachine solve like half of the investigations presented on this episode alone, since all the evidence are "removed" from the internet before police gets to look at them, or does it not work with facebook? Never had one myself so no idea how the marketplace works undert the hood..

I’m sorry… first guy tried to purchase an entire home on facebook? Like… seriously? And it was cash only and he didn’t think it was a homeless guy selling an abandoned house? Are you kidding…? Are people that stupid now? Or are people literally selling homes on Facebook now? I don’t use social media at all and have no idea what people do on there now but this seems completely ridiculous….

You’d honestly be surprised what I’ve seen people try to sell on Facebook marketplace 😅 I’ve seen everything from pet rocks to “sturdy used king sized bed frame that can hold ten people, it’s ugly but gets the job done” and I wish I was kidding

My fiancé and I bought most of our furniture and kitchen cabinets from FB Marketplace. We ALWAYS meet the seller at our/their local police station. They encourage people to do so for safety reasons. ALWAYS MEET SOMEONE AT A POLICE STATION

As a seller on Marketplace stories like this paint us in a bad light. 😩 I have dozens of stories about bad potential buyers. I never let anyone meet me at my place. I always insist on meeting at the parking lot of a business where there are ALWAYS people around!

the last story… i kind of feel bad for victor. the reaction from op was reasonable, but i have a feeling victor didn’t mean any ill intent. i could be wrong though. i still feel a little bad for the guy though
