I first met Randi in early ‘96, when I was asked to bring in an early mix of HBO’s “The Late Shift,” the film adaptation of Bill Carter’s book on the battle for the Tonight Show and beyond between Dave and Jay. Because the show was planning something about it that night. While in the show’s editing room, I was introduced to Randi. Her first words to me were “Peach Lady? My idea.” And the night she directed the show: January 12, 1998.

I love the “staff stories”, it really brings to life why this show was so successful! When it was announced that Dave would be moving to CBS, I wrote to CBS requesting tickets 🎫. Lucky I was sent two and, I believe, I was there the first week! The guests were Al Gore, Kim Bassinger and Chris Issacs. I thought Gore was going to be boring, but he was quite funny. As a side note, I met my husband via a New York Magazine personal ad that I placed. In it I said “must love Dave Letterman” we’re together 29 years, and yes we both still love Dave

That's a great story. My friend's dad would only ever let us watch Jay Leno at his house because he didn't understand Dave's humor. I was like, "How would this guy not get Dave?" I would be on the floor before Dave, Big Red, Rupert, Paul, Pat & Kenny, etc. opened their mouths just by anticipating a joke from their facial expressions. I also used to read the weird website by Michael Z. McIntee that had breakdowns of the show and clips, when I had no TV for awhile. One highlight of that was shots of Late Show celebrity guests taken from an upper floor window, all of whom were framed by a window ledge with an old piece of gum on it. I may be wrong, but I think this was Steve Young's idea. After a huge storm, one of them, I think Steve, wrote something to the effect of, "oh no! ...what about the gum?" It survived. It still looked grey, but washed.

I'll say it every time, but I'm just continually knocked out by how decent and down-to-earth so many of the staffers are. There was real heart behind the show. Thanks yet again!

I was always a huge Johnny Carson fan, and I'm old enough to remember Jack Paar, who I also liked. But Dave came along and blew all of them out of the water, before and since. I was slavishly addicted to his show; I used to leave the VCR set up to tape every show, and on weekends would have what we called "Dave-outs", bingeing all 5 shows. Loved it. Really miss the guy. I wish him a long, healthy, and productive retirement. I remember the Zsa Zsa bit--there were dinosaurs pictured on the MacDonald's bags, and Dave told the cashier that when Zsa Zsa was a little girl, she had them as pets. That just killed me.

These are just so outstanding for you all to share with us. I don't know how many days, weeks, & months you worked on that finale montage, but whatever it was, it was totally worth it. One of the most memorable deliveries of a bit of everything that made Dave's shows amazing. Can't watch it without feeling that emotion from the very first time. You should be very proud. The story of sitting as director... the guest is just gonna be Robin Williams! Talk about jumping in the deep end! About the camera ops making things so easy... That's respect, and wonderful teamwork, in a situation that comes from the love of the job.

Dave was one of my many inspirations to chose television and film as a career. I even had a cake at my high school open house just before college, with a caricature of Dave holding my own Top 10 list. I worked in TV for 18 years, but I’ve never had quite the moments that this show did over the years. I’d have absolutely loved to have worked for Dave. I think we have similar senses of quirky irreverent humor, and I’m originally from the Midwest too. I just get him. Only the first 8 years or so of my career were really comfortable, with the next 10 being a see-saw of freelancing with full time work, being out of work, freelancing with partial work, struggling, and most recently and for a long time being unemployed. But I wish I could have worked on Letterman. It just would have clicked.
