General Kuribayashi was a very good tactician One of the few Japanese officers that aimed to prevent senseless casualties of his men rather than resort to suicide tactics. Before his arrival in Iwo Jima the garrison was digging in the coast. He moved everything back to the mountains and caves and held there, where it was safer.
I like it when directors of war movies do this with rare weapons of warfare that barely are seen being portrayed or used in films. As a way it’s an interesting way to portray the extensive use of weapons of all different shapes and sizes that were used during World War 2
