Another idea is to present something that the interviewers might not take into account. I was once asked why I should be hired as a temporary English teacher if I'm not a native speaker. I told them I can antecipate and deal with my students' mistakes in an easier way since our mother tongue was the same. I got the job.

I just found your channel. I really like it. I am a hiring manager at a company in the USA. Most of the people I hire are offshore, meaning English is most likely not their first language. I could not possibly agree with you any more on the point that grammar is secondary to communication skills. The most frustrating thing in the world is not being able to communicate freely with my team mates. One tiny point of contention I have with this video is how you answered the MS Access question. It sounded a little bit contrived to me. You are right on the money with 'be interested and show energy.' But for me personally, I don't want to be fluffed. I would rather hear them say something like, 'MS Access, that's the database program, right? It sounds really cool to me, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it in a business setting yet. I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn how to use it and help your company to be successful.' Excitement, interest, energy, and friendliness are super powers in an interview.

I got a job after watching this video for the second time. I think I improved my Application Letter using a lot of words connected to emotions and just expressed that working for that company would bring me at the edge of climax every minute working for them. At the interview what worked best for me was acting like some of the comments already mentioned: Behave like you already have the best job in the World and you are NOT desperate to get a job. I was so used to rejection already that it was just "another fruitless job interview" so I didn't care that much and BAM! I got myself a position in a foreign country and too bad as well ;). I often have interviews as an interviewer, so the other side of the story. I have to say that there are many situations where we seek "just" skills, mostly social skills and general planning and management skills; AND, we seek it in urgency. So, the first one who is "above the threshold" gets the job - maybe just if she does not wear eyeglasses through the entire interview or so. In these situations (which you never know when you are in it) simply to be able to say the three dots (...) when you have navigated yourself into an unfavourable narrative position is a great advantage. For example, you can say that "in your earlier workplace there were sometimes scheduling issues and the personal environment, well, ... , there were many people there" and it works. The minor part is that you can tell how thing did (not) work, and most importantly, you can show you know the limits and you can be discrete, or loyal, even in though situations. So, when you get into trouble, just do not be afraid to stop speaking or to exit in a short way. It can be viewed as a major skill, anyways.

What if you very rarely get invited to an interview, how do you become experienced in interviews? Companies may not find a lack of work experience a problem when you’re young, but if you are over 50 they’re not interested. I’ve done plenty of courses recently, so my knowledge is up to date, but they’re really not interested. Maybe it’s because I don’t suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect, so I don’t overrate myself. I won’t make claims about myself that I can’t deliver on.

God, its a bloody minefield ! Am doing an application for a job I really want and I've got three days to do it. Realised how many mistakes I've made up until now with regard to cv, letter, interview, well everything really ! I'm really shit at selling myself, I've always considered that an ability to do the job is more important than being able to talk about it, and that the old adage is still true - there are those who talk about it and those who do it and the talkers often turn out to be useless at the job. But...that philosophy hasn't got me far in the past so !
