Video Summary:
We've all had experiences we'd like to forget. While past experiences can be instructive, re-living them and nursing the festering wound of a past event adds nothing good to your life. Once you've learned the lesson to be had from that experience, you can choose to let it go.
The past, while real at one time, is now just a concept, as is the future. The only time you have is now. Don't let something in the past rob you of your present productivity and happiness. Choose to let it go and live. When you have trouble letting go of the past, it's typically because you keep bringing it back into your life.
Identify the memory that besieges you the most. Use guided meditation to let it go and replace it with the present. During the guided meditation, you dwell on the present, which forces the past out of your consciousness. Repeated sessions of guided meditation will teach you how to deprive the past of the life you've inadvertently been breathing back into it.
Designing a more positive present that's too busy to dwell on the past can help push it out of your life. So can journaling, introspection, and counseling or coaching. Make the choice to stop reviving the past.

You can't forget the past. Nature provides us with a memory for a reason. What you CAN do is recognize what you need to do, or NOT do in the present to feel the best about yourself that you can. And remember having a wonderful past is not an entitlement, it's a blessing. Some people like me and many others, simply lost the lottery for how their past was set up for them.

Who knew a video from 2014, could help me so much in 2022. Thank you so much. I’ve been trying to let go and decided to add this my daily ritual. When you said :” the past only exists cause I keep bringing it up” it’s true. The past and pain doesn’t have to exist anymore if I don’t let it. It’ll be there but I don’t have to fixate on it. I choose to let it go. I can’t do anything about it. And can’t even worry about the future. This helped my anxiety more than anything else. ❤️

I was cheated on, abused and taken advantage of financially, recently I've started new relationship with someone who is incredible but my past keeps coming up in my head. I've searched online for the answer. I spent too long blaming my past on my current, I couldn't trust, I can't change. It sounds small but that 2 minutes of letting go and telling myself it's just a fake memory that isn't worth keeping really helped. She loves me and wants a break so I can work on myself, I hope I can change. Thanks for the videos.

It's a real memory it did happen and no the memory can still hurt you rather if you ignore it or not and sooner or later it comes up and even if really trying to really let it go then really you shouldnt even say what it is that you went through because that can bring back the memories and make the person more upset you shouldnt really run from your past either or pretend like it never happened at all don't avoid it because if you avoid and pretend that the trauma never happened at all then that is a risk that soon rather if you like it or not that trauma can still be hurting you and you may not no what's causing you're emotional discomfort or even physical comfort when it may be the trauma that you just ran from and it really sucks hurting when you don't know what could have caused it I think this guy was talking nonsense all the time

@@davidtichborne2912 I disagree. I've been through therapy several times. Talking about it did give me some relief to keep going. But it did not give me a fulfilled life trying to work on past events again and again. I'm not a fighter, because my past holds me back! I'm not happy, because my past holds me back. I have never just let it go. I couldn't, didn't know how. I obsessed about the past. Trying to understand the meaning, trying to learn from it. There is nothing to learn but pain and darkness. I will try to avoid it from now on. For too long the past has been holding me back, every single day. And guess what - yesterday was thr first beautiful day that I could really enjoy for a long long time. It's gonna be hard to maintain blocking out the past, but I'll try. It felt good yesterday. I want to be happy.

David Arriaga i think detaching onself from the past (like cancer) is a little extreme, i appreciate him being strong minded and offering an intelligent approach to the matter but effectively what hes asking is to detach yourself completely from the past... Noone can really do that, the only thing you can do is acknowledge it and simply move forwards and do your best not to let it affect you and by being strong. It certainly isnt as easy as his quick fix solution, you cant just forget in an insant, i appreciate hes trying but sometimes can be too enthusiastic. also everyones past is different and so requires a different solution.

The 'human mind', or to be specific for each individual 'the person', will always strive to survive. It's the main reason why 99% of the worlds population will never accept this kind of practice, because this video actually shows that the 'mind' or 'the person' is actually an illusion, this video shows that the Awareness is ones true self, not 'the person'. Best example i can give to show that 'the person' is nothing more than just an illusion is an individual having permanent amnesia, 'the person' is totally erased while the Awareness remains exactly the same, perfect and whole. You actually find yourself living in total freedom (without pain and suffering) when you fully realize that you are the Awareness, and not 'the person'. enjoy! :)

Every time I let my mind wander I think of pointless childhood memories both good and bad. Often times when I talk to the people from those memories today in real life they don't remember those things. Essentially I'm holding on to things that meant more to me at the time and to this day and I rationalize that as me caring more than other people and that stops me from letting go. I feel like a historian for a time in life when no one was thinking about the future and were just trying to have as many experiences as possible. It bothers me that's it's all subconscious and the second I start relaxing I'm suddenly thinking about about a day in the 3rd grade when the class made ice cream sundaes and had fun playing board games. I just want to relax but it's like these memories just persist.

I think daily mindfulness meditations will actually help so that even in our idle state, we are living in the present! I can relate to both of these comments. I think many of us can It's mentioned by the great sages from all over the world that policing our thoughts is like weeding a garden. It should be mandatory if you're seeking a peaceful and fulfilling life And when done regularly, it's easy to stay on top of it. Practices like these, mindfulness, presences, are like training the psychological "muscle". The more you train it, the stronger it becomes... strength to keep the mind focused and rooted in the now. Because the present moment is the only place that matters and it's the place where things are usually alright. And in there present moment, if things are not to your liking, this is the only time you may do something about it or change it so it is pleasant.. the present moment I'm sending my love and healing energy your way ♊🧘‍♂️💪❤🕺🙏🕉

There's someone in the past that I would like to forget (it's been like 4 months that I constantly keep thinking about that person)so everyday in the shower or in the car while driving to school, I say to myself repeatedly "I will forget the past" or sometimes "I live in the present". This video was amazing. I’ve been dealing with a lot lately on my mind. In fact I’ve recently experienced what I believe to be an anxiety attack for the first time a few days ago and another one last night. My whole life I’ve ruminated on the past, I know I shouldn’t but it’s like I can’t help it, but knowing the past isn’t real is oddly satisfying. Thank you.

Only this video is amazing beginning ways for me to have my best life ahead of me. For me I know that whatever I did I never meant to do it that way but it is alright (no need to rethinking it over and over like I did for my whole life) I feel so thankful and free even more, yet I also want to master this. I hope everyone here is also healing from your past no matter how bad it is. You are now can change your life and it is up to you. Your life is yours. Thank u Leo for your very impactful teaching. The past might “not be real”, but the person I was wasn’t real either. The beautiful person that I used to be wasn’t real either. We’re not grieving the past we’re grieving the fact our realities are very different to how they should be. The person that I was to attract a partner isn’t real, the person that I was to build my future isn’t real, and the pain I never felt isn’t real but the pain and loneliness and a life of nothing is real.

I'll admit it...this does work for a while because its a coping mechanism. I've done something like this too many times. Its called repression. You repress your bad memories and not think about them or how they make you feel and it seems to work, but for many cases (me included), this isn't a good way. If you continue to just not think about it when it comes up, than you're depriving yourself from the emotions. Those emotions will build up without you realizing and then one day something will trigger it and BOOM the feelings come out. What you need to know is that yes, they are in the past, but all things in the past make you who you are (ESPECIALLY the bad ones). You should work through the bad memories and learn from them instead of ignoring them.

Something I did with my counselor is walking through the situation step by step. Going through it again is pretty painful, but talking about it is the first step. It can really help to look back and see things you missed. The next is to try to learn from it. "What can I do to make sure that doesn't happen?" (if its possible), but don't let your past control you either.

You're confusing"repression" with "supression". One does not know that which is being repressed because it never makes it into awareness. Suppression occurs when a memory occurs and we attempt to force it out of awareness.] One more thing: how many times do you have to dredge up a memory to learn from it. Let's say you accidentally ran a stop sign, struck a pedestrian, and put them in a wheelchair for life. How many times do you have to look at that moment to learn anything that gives the victim the use of their legs? Constantly revisiting painful memories is often a form of self punishment or trying to undo the past or the consequences of those memories. In either case, it is futile. Nothing changes but the sum total of your suffering.

Sonny Starr yes well said, i understand this guy is very knowledgeable and logical. But like you said even when you do that (like cut them off) the emotions still flood back. I appreciate this guys output and i think hes really trying hard to help and like his strong enthusiasm but trying to ignore your emotions makes it even more so, the more you try to forget the more you remember, its always the opposite and theres always a catch. However i think cutting off memories is a little extreme, the past is the only thing that roots us to the ground.. I wouldnt take his advice too literal and is always hit and miss, for some it works, others not.

Tommy Chappell you need to watch the video again because he’s not once said you need to ignore your feelings. you don’t understand the concept of letting go which he so eloquently described. There is a difference between letting go of the past and not feeling or ignoring your feelings. He is not asking you to ignore your feelings in fact he even said talk about them with your therapist or your coach you just did not listen to the video you just want to make a comment for the fuck of it

You actually find yourself living in total freedom (without pain and suffering) when you fully realize that you are the Awareness, and not 'the person'. enjoy! :)

what do you do when beautiful memories are mixed with bad memories in the same event. Do you through away eveything away? Some good memories cant be separated out. In addition, denying the past didnt happen robs you of your history and any lessons you can learn from it. Some bad memories cause deep wounds, and although the wound heals, the scar never goes away.

+A.C. Tilly . Im sorry to hear of your loss and understand to a degree how it effects you. Certain unique feelings or emotions are associated with grief. Watching a loved one die through prolonged illness , sudden accidental death etc all create different emotions . I found my friend after he committed suicide. His wife called me about him leaving for work, without taking his car and he could not be contacted etc. He left that morning as normal Kissing her and his kids. I had been with him the evening previous and he was ok.I went over and found him in the garage . The best thing that was said to her came from their local Priest. He said, if her husband survived ,he wouldn't understand or remember why he acted so. We will never know the answer or understand. Its a tragedy and in time we come to terms with it. If he took his car and had a mysterious fatal accident would have been similar. Its very raw with you A C and I hope what I write here will be of some comfort. God bless and strengthen you at this time

Every time i see them in public they say something to me to taunt me. They told their new friends too to get them in on it. I really don’t want my friends finding out about it. It stresses me out a lot and when i’m out with my friends in public i stress about the thought of seeing them while i’m with my friends cause i know that they’ll say something. I find your information very helpful Leo! Thank you for sharing this deep well thought out information! I’ve been saddled with past emotions of a 20 amp year marriage that ended because of my spouse infidelity! It has caused issues with trust in my new ones that have ended because of it! I am deciding right now to let go of that past emotionally divorce and accept responsibility for it! I have to get clarity and reckon with it and see it for what it is, a past wonderful event that ended with a negative experience! It happens to many people, but it is the way that we interpret it and the emotions that we attach to it! So I’m going to label it and catalog it as past and move on! I will not allow myself to label my future mate as untrustworthy or look at her through the suspicious lenses as I have been! Thank you Leo 🙏! I will continue to listen with a empty mind that is open, so I can develop as a sound minded individual!

This was an amazing video, Leo! I really really enjoyed the mindfulness exercise. Extremely valuable to get a reminder of the fact that the past is just a concept. Only the present moment is real, so the past feels real because we keep bringing it up. If we stop this habit, then the past is gone (and with it the bad memories) forever.

+Yato The lonesome one What if I told you there is no better version of your self, there is no better version of anyone. You are just you, and you did what was best for you at that particular moment so don't be so harsh on your self, if anything don't force things to happen, most things happen naturally and with the flow.

Late at night, when my partner’s asleep sometimes i get this rush of emotions and immense sadness out of nowhere, ruminating my incredibly sad and cruel childhood and throughout my teenage to early adult years. It comes out of nowhere, i could be scrolling on my phone and then boom a flood of memories and tears. I’m fine in the day time. Ultimately it is the past, it cannot be changed, its there forever. But i have power/ control at least more so then as a child to change my present and future. Praying for all those who also seek healing

Thank you, thank the God in you for allowing Him to bring you out and birth this purpose, as it's so greatly needed. Im once again functioning, in a world, and society that is so DYSfunctional. Thank you Leo, such a bright soul you are, and tons of clarity coming from your mind and heart. I AM very greatful - have had so much darkness and hindering in my past, that I eventually ended up withdrawing myself completely fromsociety. Not knowing how to get rid of all that old and hurtful stuff. Old tax papers, repeated abuse from people saying they loved me, this happening for years and years, while I was trying to figure out what i did wrong. so I inside of me formed this idea, that I would never by myself be able to sustain a healthy happy living with a healthy economy. I got really sick with fibromyalgia, I think from all the worrying about how to feed my child and myself, so I frantically saved every scrap of paper, to ensure that the bad economy situation, which lasted for years, did not ever happen again, only to now find my house, is a store house for these papers,, and I have no room to do the creative stuff I dream of. And what if I threw out all of the papers of diagnoses from doctors and what treatment they gave me, (which never really worked.anyway) But just in case I had to visite one again, and they needed some informations, - or better yet - what if I forgot!!! ( hahahahahahaha - so silly, right ) because who in their right mind wants to keep sickenss, or the thought of it running in their mind 24/7?... Well I did, I know it sounds silly, but again I was trying to figure out why I had become so sick, that I had to get a pension. Also the fear stepped in everytime I tried to get rid of these old dusty papers of failure, making me feel even worse - its a circkle of suffering, not so easy to get out of - so I have been feeling very trapped. to the point where I coulndt really move or see any solutions, a very lonely place to be... UNTILL TODAY :D Now I know what to do, thanks to your video and some other bright souls videos - I am so very thankful. towards everyone making the effort and time to educate their fellow humans. Still need a lot of work as you said, one needs to keep on working - I think its to make new thought lines in the brain, and that takes time, but the decision of not going there anymore, thats an either you do ro you dont, thats a quick one :) and I dont! :) Thank you for that little meditaion, it really made me realize with my whole body and all my senses what THE HERE AND NOW are, not just a clever mantra :) So... for the first time - I AM really confident that I can handle these old threats to my sanity and happiness. I now know that my future are as bright as I can imagine it to be From the deep in my heart - Thank you so very much and may God continue to Bless you with everything wonderful in your life :)

I literally cannot get over my past. I just turned 20, and ever since i started high school, i cannot stop thinking/wanting to go back to middle school, and the years 2013/2015. I feel pathethic, cause everyone else is moving forward, and i cannot move forward, i just want to go back. I don’t think this is a on-going theme for me, i never missed the past or any previous years before i quit middle school. So i think it’s something wrong
