Mate nicknamed me "Boon" or used to say it when we were at college. I was really upset to hear what had happened. Did you know why? Was it money troubles or something? The press wasn't saying that much. Must be weird being famous in your youth and just dealing with all that: money, drugs women etc. He's still alive every time I listen to Level 42.

Boon apparently had suffered from depression for most of his life and was diagnosed as bi-polar shortly before he died. It was truly shocking and very sad news to hear of his sudden death. He is sorely missed.

Funny…I played in a cover band ‘86 - ‘89 and we did a lot of Level 42. We had an awesome bass player, and the vocal range suited me.

Very true. For all their unfashionability (then and after) plus their derivativeness, I certainly didn't ever find another band doing what they did. Still return to them every so often for my L42 fix.

Rubbish! Brit-Funk movement of late 70's early 80's produced Shakatak, Morrissey Mullen, Incognito, Central Line, Heatwave as well as Level 42. Don't forget Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Billy Cobham etc.😂

I’m 64 and I’ve enjoyed all sorts of music in my life, but when my time comes (and I can only take one band with me)…It will be these boys! I’ve seen them many, many times - as they get older Mark’s vocals aren’t quite what they were (like all of us) but they define the jazz funk of the early 80’s. There’s a rumour that Mark was once asked ‘What’s it like to be the best bass player in the world?’ And he replied “I want to be the richest bass player in the world “. Might be true, but I doubt it. Seeing them in 1981/82 was the biggest privilege of my Level 42 years. Raw, not interested in the charts and pioneers of British jazz funk. Thank you boys. And, yes… I will be at the Cliffs Pavilion in 2025….God willing 😂

All of the members of Level 42 were & still are amazing musician's but what struct me about Mark & Mike in the early to mid years was the extra energy they were putting into their performances as no matter how good you are you want to make sure you dont make any mistakes or hit bum notes... But these guys were running around & bouncing up & down while playing their instruments & believe me when i tell you its very easy to lose your timing when doing this but not with Mike & Mark... Though I'll admit Mike would have to rush back to his instruments unless he was singing out in front of the fan's with his head phone on & just egging the fans on... It has been a very difficult trying 12 months on everyone all over the world because of this Coronavirus & we can never forget the one's we have lost to this virus & the one's still battling it but once its under control & we can go back to normality then i hope Level 42's 40th Anniversay Tour which should've been in October 2020 is now back on for this October 2021.. If this is the case then try to get tickets to see them Live as apart from a great night we the fans have to take into account how much more Live Shows they will do & tour as Level 42 have pretty much toured all the time & its just a matter of time when they decide not to play Live anymore... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... RIP Alan Murphy RIP Rowland " Boon " Gould " Sadly Gone, But Not Forgotten " .....

Wow, a fistful of funk to open and then the more thematic Heathrow comes alight with the sax solo, the playout track unfortunately skews on the tape and cools the mood into the credits. They picked up the pop baton as the jazz funk embers faded, the echoes of Montreux became a distant memory and thankfully we knew where they had come from at the start of their long, musical journey.

Marks look to Mike, in dune tune, when he realises how out of tune his bass is to the keyboards .
@greatwhite619673 жыл бұрын
I think this was the main reason that Mark would go on to work closely with Rob Green & then moved on to Status (predominantly) Headless Bass Guitar's... This was becomes John Diggin's aka JD who built the JD Supernatural Series of Bass Guitar's & other models of his range which Mark is playing in this footage had a tendency to go out of tune because John Diggin's made those bass guitars with layers of walnut & maple laminate & this caused the earlier models to go out of tune more than normal... If you were mostly or completely playing finger style it wouldve bren fine but most likely need tuned at some pint but with Mark's powerful & at times insane slapping style most likely caused them tk go out of tune more than it should've... Thats just my theory & only Mark King & John Diggin's know exactly why Mark stopped using JD Supernatural Series Bass Guitar's but my theory would have a strong case to argue as that very reason... John Diggins went on to solve this problem over the years but i think Marl was looking fir a bass that could withstand his playing style & keep in tune but (like myself) just ask any musician & they'll tell you they check their tuning is spot on inbetween each song & with the advent of constant updated technology its so much easier & quicker to do than it was all those decades ago... There are many reasons especially for bass guitar's going out of tune as they are using much thicker gauge strings & like shows like this in the old days if you left you instrument out in the area you were going to go on & play that studios lights could have effect on bass guitar's & this is why modern bass guitar's are built to withstand many elements that could cause them to go out of tune... One of the other factors & the main one is Mark's fault as he shouldve checked his was in tune after each song especially knowing how he plays on the bass guitar... Ive seen Mark up even Status Headless Bass Guitar's as its not always the fault of the bass but the strings themself as they are expanding & contracting while being played & every bass guitar needs checking either before you start your set/inbetween each song & during a song if need be as ive seen many lead & bass guitarists do this inbetween the moments they are not due to play their guitar's... The simple fact is stings bend & go out of tune but a quality high end instrument should keep it from going out of tune down to a minimum... I remember going to see the Power Trio of Jack Bruce/Ginger Baker & Gary Moore Live in 1993 or 1994 when they tour their only one album that they released which was " Around The Next Dream " Jack had started out playing his older Gibson EB-3 & after a few songs his bass tech brought out his Warwick Thumb Fretless Bass Guitar & within seconds i noticed as did Jack that his Warwick Thumb Bass Guitar was not in tune & the look he gave to his Bass Tech was one of someone severely pissed off but within seconds he tuned it up while singing & if your werent really listening or as i was a close to Jack (which was about 3 feet away) most people wouldnt have noticed & probably thought Jack was doing a bit improv... As i wrote this down i just realised that none of these amazing musicians are alive anymore, Eric Clapton not include as he wasnt part of this specific Power Trio... As the one everyone expected to die first was the seriously irrepressible but a one off truly amazing drummer that was mad Ginger Baker as he was a junkie but he outlasted his detractors who said he'd die young if he didnt quit & he passed away in 2019 aged 80 yet many musicians that knew him or about him along with the Press figured hed be dead begore he was 30 but somehow he managed to live to 80... I guess God wasn't keen on taking Ginger sooner as he was a one serious hell raiser... lol But there was no denying his genuis as a drummer & i doubt there will ever be one like him ever again... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe & healthy wherever you are in this world... .....

Ps I had not gotten round to watching all 3 songs & i had only watched " Almost There " when i figured i'd look at the comments & spotted yours to explain this can happen but once i watched " Heathrow " & then waiting to hear Marks bass out of tune i listenef & it wasnt/isnt & i think it was he was a little late on the downbeat at the start of his playing & why Mark looked at him as i cant hear any tuning issues but Mike does playing slightly out of time in the downbeat as he starts & if it wasnt that ive no idea why Mark looked in that direction!... .....
@marcuskingstanley95223 жыл бұрын
@@greatwhite61967 thank you for your reply. They are most certainly out of tune with each other. Now whether that is a fault of mikes keyboards or marks guitar, am not exactly sure, but am more inclined to blame a stringed instrument over an electronic instrument. Having said that i heard that the mini moog was notorious for going out of tune.
@jazzzzdude3 жыл бұрын
Or it could be that Mike's Prophet 5 went out of tune. These analogue synths used to do that as the circuit boards warmed up. My juno 60 had a tuning nob on the back and it needed it. Mike talks about this affecting the Prophet 5 in one of his interviews.
