I studied in a very conservative catholic school. I remember how outrageous Gaga was to everyone. I was a HUGE fan since I was like 8 but I was very afraid of telling anyone cause everyone said things like “she promotes homosexuality”, “she’s satanic”, “she’s gross”, “she’s so vulgar”, “she’s an attention seeker”, “she has a penis”. Despite all those comments, I kept liking her more and more each day cause she made me feel safe with her music and unique, free, amazing personality. I spent ours watching her shows, listening to her interviews, and thanks to her, I wasn’t afraid of being gay in such close-minded social circle. What she did for me, I know she did for thousands of insecure kids out there. I will love her forever.

She was literally raising the LGBT kids to be proud of themselves and become confident in their own skin, during the 2000s and 2010s, when most people were homophobic and ignorant about the LGBTs, especially trans community. Ok but the way you described ARTPOP was amazing. She ended true pop and she knew it was going to happen all along her plans. She had to accept that ARTPOP was the last true piece of art in pop. She ended everything that was created by some of the most iconic popstars of all time and she knew it needed to happen or else the media and the newer artists would try to twist it. After ARTPOP, it all ended. She made a Jazz album and a country album. She finally returned to pop last year but it will never be the same again

You really hit the nail on the head and got to the heart of the issue: what's really set Gaga apart this whole time was her relationship with her fans. Hearing the Manisfesto again over ten years later, it's scary how prophetic it turned out to be because her fandom culture was the stepping stone for the influencer culture we have right now. "They are the kings. They are the queens. They write the history of the kingdom, while I am something of a devoted Jester." "We are nothing without our image. Without our projection. Without the spiritual hologram of who we perceive ourselves to be, or rather to become, in the future."

THIS IS THAT VIDEO! This is the video needed to give credit to Lady Gaga, not just as a singer/songwriter, but as the influential and impactful person that she is in many areas. ICON is used loosely now, but when someone uses this word to describe Gaga it just fits perfectly, her attributions to today's pop culture may be blurry to many, and we probably could've got here eventually, but she really pushed and keeps on pushing society forward.

I would argue that because of Gaga's influence in fashion and how she was able to connect the popstar world to the fashion world, she did have a direct connection to the MET Gala becoming "mainstream". Since Gaga opened the doors for celebs/popstars to dress in haute couture, she opened the doors for the MET Gala to become a place where someone like Rihanna could get attention in haute couture.

It was ahead of its time. At that time, eccentric EDM pop wasn't what the world wanted to hear. Now that they're tired of "real"/"authentic" music, they want to escape reality by listening to music that takes us to another realm - which ARTPOP definitely does. It's like a complete drug trip without the drugs. Especially after this pandemic, people just want to forget reality and dance. If Gaga released ARTPOP today, it would totally smash all the charts.

Gaga is the best & most influential artist debuted on the XXI century, and at this point i doubt anyone could top her, she is so soulful and she has done so much for pop culture, her music & lyrics have so many layers, even the songs that could seem simple, i always have a new take every time i listen to her songs again, that doesn't happen often when it comes to pop music. Yesterday i was listening to Aura, and it blown me away how it is against the "oppressed" stereotype about the burqa & muslim women in western culture and also mocks the male gaze playing with her enigma view, teasing to discover what's underneath but never revealing what because there's nothing really, just the objectification.

I love this video. Gaga really is one of the last music icons that has the impact she has. Gaga really changed modern day pop culture. Gaga brought such a new feel to music yet very different and unique. Of course, Gaga definitely has been influenced by other artist. She has expressed her influences being Madonna, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Led Zeppelin, Queen, icons of pop, rock and jazz etc etc. The thing with Gaga is, took her inspiration from her influences and went FULL steam ahead. I don’t think it’s copying because she’s been more outrageous than anyone she’s next to, or really in history, it’s just influenced with twist from her own ideas. Her music, along with fashion has really a deep meaning, a lot of the things she does that might be seen as “weird” or “horrific” “foolish” etc, really is deeper than it seems she just has a very creative mind. Around that time, 2010-2012 outrageous red carpet ensembles did seem to be a trend, which Gaga did bring out for that era. The other artist probably followed along because they were directed to do so because it was popular. Nowadays outrages and shocking red carpet appearances really are nothing too surprising. I believe Lady Gaga was ahead of her time, she is an artist most won’t understand unless you truly take your time to analyze her craft. There isn’t really any other artist like her. She’s extremely talented, a force to be reckoned with. Just in general, lady Gaga is a performance artist.

Artpop is her best album. thank you for making this video and giving her the credit she deserves!

Michael Jackson too though interacted heavily with his fans, back in the 90s he basically did q&a‘s, he attended his fans funerals, paid for their medical bills, opened a website in the early 2000s to talk to them and even attended party’s that his fans hosted. He wrote letters for them and consistently met them, hugged them, let them in his house, and brought them on stage with him. He himself even hosted party’s just to meet up with his fans. Even when some didn’t win tickets he still let them in because he loved them that much. When fans said his concert tickets were too expensive, he lowered the price. That’s only some things, so the narrative that you stated in the beginning of Michael ‘seeing himself as being above his fans‘ is false. There’s a reason people were that crazy about him to this day. To this day I still haven’t seen an artist have as much love for their fans as MJ did.

Yeah, the video is a little off when it comes to fandom. Plus alot of what he says Lady Gaga was doing Justin Bieber was doing too. Both of them imo are the last superstars of music. But I still agree with this video. Other than those one off moments the only way fans could interact with Micheal Jackson was through watching his videos on tv, seeing him in a magazine or seeing him live at a concert. Micheal Jackson though he tried to interact with his fans was still very distant. Social media changed the game. People used to faint when they saw Micheal Jackson in person, little kids legitimately thought he had real life superpowers and anytime he appeared anywhere it was a BIG DEAL. If Micheal Jackson was a star today with social media you would wake up and see him on Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok, KZbin... you would know what he was eating, thinking, what he was wearing today, where he was going today. People wouldn't faint if they saw him in person, kids wouldn't think he was superman turned human.

@@serenaistheb.o.a.t i wouldn’t be sure. Cause the people that met him all said he had a strong presence. The staff, or the make up artist that saw him everyday all said he had something that intimidated people and gave them an adrenaline rush. Because even nowadays fans pass out when they see regular artists. So imagine Meeting Michael, a human with incredible high vibrations and energy. A lot of people that passed out on his concerts weren’t even fans. They just couldn’t handle his energy. 23 people died at his concerts. So I believe even if he was an artist today; he’d still have this unique magic about him that would take over the world. Cause a huge misconception about artist nowadays is is that they can’t get to Michaels level of fame. That’s wrong. It’s just no artist is doing what he did, made music that EVERYBODY can listen to, or has that originality that the next gen wants to copy. Even with social media, it can still reach middle aged and old people because the regular media that existed back then still exists today: news, newspaper, magazines, TV, radio etc. those are the ones the older use. If the said artist appears is those media outlets it can reach everybody. But I know what you mean. With social media the artist doesn’t have that mystery anymore that artists back then had. Well, maybe a solution would be if the artist didn’t use social media. To attract younger ones their management team could promote them with a page. That’s how they could keep the mystery.

@@fldas17 I agree with you. Micheal Jackson definitely had a strong presence. It reminds me of what they say Marilyn Monroe did to men in the 50s whenever she entered a room. He's the only pop star I can think off who made grown men act like teenage girls. An aura that very few people possess. I don't think it's a misconception. Micheal Jackson was the biggest star in the world during a time when we lived in a monoculture. In 1991 the Black and White music video premiered to an audience of over 500 million people worldwide, a few years later his Superbowl halftime show was viewed by more than half the population of America and over 1 billion more people outside of America at a time when the NFL was not getting anywhere near those type of numbers outside of America. When the internet and social media came along it broke the monoculture, making it pretty much impossible for one entertainer to ever again experience the level of fame Micheal Jackson attained at his peak. I don't get how more people don't see this. It doesn't matter who has the most followers or who's the biggest star in the world today they will never be as famous as 80s and 90s Micheal Jackson. As for someone doing what Micheal Jackson did in the 80s maybe at some point it will be possible for an artist to do it, but right now it's not possible. Timing is everything. In the early 80s people were talking about how they hadn't had stars as big and influential as Elvis and The Beatles in forever and they were wondering if music would ever produce anything like them again... and then as we all know Micheal Jackson released Thriller and put an end to those talks, but now we are back in the early 80s again. People are having those same doubts about whether music can produce another MJ or Elvis, but unlike the early 80s something like MTV that has the potential to change the way we experience music isn't there for a potential new Micheal Jackson to utilize. What can anyone do right now that hasn't already been done?

@@serenaistheb.o.a.t I agree. Maybe i just keep on lying to myself with the ‘his fame isn’t impossible to achieve‘ thing because I want someone like him again so badly. I do believe Michael was the last Star with ‘SUPER stardom‘. Because before Michael it seemed each decade had a mega star; 50- Elvis 60- Beatles and so on. But ever since Michael there has never been a star again with the super-Fame. And of course super talent and originality. I too have always thought everything that can be done in music has already been done. It’s just keeps on repeating. I guess I’m just very unlucky to not have really experienced that last greatness while it lasted. Being someone who loves the entertainment business especially music in this generation is really sad. It’s not like all artists are horrible, there are a couple great ones like gaga. But I mean something super special like Michael will not come again. :(

@@fldas17 I don't think you're lying to yourself. It's possible that some guy in the future that we don't know about could somehow achieve it, I just think it's extremely unlikely at this point. In 2021 Micheal Jackson's world is a bygone era. The Guardian even had a great article earlier this year breaking down how the internet changed celebrity. The mainstream space that allowed for a Micheal Jackson sized megastar is shrinking and in its place rises a million and one niches and an endless pit of "stars" competing for our attention. Thats what is this video described as "the void." I'm feeling the same way you are. I feel unlucky that I didn't get to experience that greatness, feel turned off and bored by music today and desperately want something like Thriller to drop and reset the culture.

i feel the same way, even the music has morph to this format, specially the "alternative" pop scene with people like lana del rey, billie eilish etc, it's like artists on the top nowdays just want to appeal to the most common sentiments in order to be relatable to everyone, sometimes sacrificing individuality and things that might be hard to digest or sometimes there's not much personality beyond that, an example of this is taylor swift's folklore which seems made to please your average millennial and gen z. I love gaga because her songs are not easily relatable when you're in the surface, but once you start to layer her art there are really deep meanings, plus she has always an aura of mystery around her and her odd choices, it's fascinating.

I agree that she is the last pop star. With the rise of social media a lot has changed in the music industry and in the world, in general. People can become famous singers and performers, but there are no longer pop stars who have this much impact in the media and culture. I think she reinvented herself because she knew this time was coming and she would no longer be seen as this huge pop star, so she shifted to a lot of different things and managed to stay relevant and talked about. We don't see artists anymore who put on big performances and try to get a message across through it or through an outfit, an entrance. We are at a time in history when is more important to showcase an aesthetic that is appealing to the audience and that they can follow and aspire to have. People want to be able to buy things and look like someone rather than to be amazed and confused by a weird outfit, by an outrageous performance, by art in itself. I'm not saying art is dead, but is pretty secondary nowadays.

Lady Gaga also took heavy influence of K-Pop as well. Especially musically. She made dance music (which k-pop artist called their music on iTunes before k-pop was added) and she always pushed performances, which (like the 80’s) has been a staple from then as well in South Korea. I mean let alone that Teddy Park (or as you might know 2NE1’s and Blackpink’s personal producer) was at one point going to help produce Fame before opting out for 2NE1. And you can even see similar sounds in both Lady Gaga’s Fame and 2NE1’s First Mini Album (though released a year apart), have similar influences and vibes.

People are still going to try and minimise her impact because she ‘tries to make herself out to be original’...she never said she was COMPLETELY original, no one is, not even Gaga’s biggest influences..but you can still be relatively unique because there isn’t one combination of influences that are exactly the same. And let’s be honest, no one revolved all of their looks and songs around a cohesive aesthetic and packaged them into eras that transcended the album as boldly and relentlessly Gaga did. And if the integration of high art and fashion in pop music makes you feel uncomfortable because you think high art is pretentious, you might want to fix your relationship with high art before attacking someone for tribute for their love for it, you wouldn’t want someone attacking your love for something. I feel like people are turned off by Björk for a similar reason, though her influence was more in the experimental and indie music scene than the pop music and pop culture landscape, though I know she most likely influenced Gaga in some way. People generally don’t like to think too hard when listening to pop music, and many people feel dumb when consuming high art and miss the point that you create your own relationship with it, or you can appreciate an artists intent. I do think this video could have talked more about musical and musician-ship influence, because there wouldn’t be the new weirdo pop artists with the songwriting/musical talent to back it up without Gaga, though those artists might have stronger musical influences coming from pop of the 20th century, especially 80’s and the indie of the 00’s, Gaga made way for them to have a platform, especially in the internet age, because before Gaga (at the point where pop music got stale) no one could fathom artists like them existing with their sound. But Gaga gave a stage for pop stars of the internet age to take from less conventional or more underground and avant garde places and fuse it into a weirdo pop star sound and image, and prove that you can also have songwriting/musical talent just like Gaga proved! Grimes, Poppy, Charli XCX, Dorian Electra, Rina Sawayama, FKA twigs, Marina and the Diamonds, Halsey to name a few.

I know I'm late to this, but I definitely agree with all the points made in this video. I also believe the downfall of celebrity culture is directly linked with the rise of social media, because no longer are celebrities put on a pedestal, there's not that aura of 'wanting to be them' anymore, at least not to the same extent (because elements of it are definitely still there). Instead, people have instant access to celebrities pages and a view into what their lives may be like, and the more people can see the good, bad, and the ugly of a celebrity, the less power they can harness. It takes the 'god-like' factor that many celebrities were given in the peak of 2000's celebrity culture and it humanizes them, which is important for celebrities but also the very downfall of celebrity culture.
