As someone who was forced to retire at the age of 45 due to disability (PTSD, burnout, and severe issues with my knees and back), I understand the challenges both you and Biden faced in transitioning to a new life. I too have struggled with this change. My identity was deeply tied to my work in engineering and, before that, as a military EMT. Now, I’m slowly trying to reinvent myself. Without a wife and children, this journey has its own unique difficulties and advantages. To cope, I volunteer and have enrolled in a Psychology degree, purely for the joy of learning. Even if it takes my burned-out brain until I’m 60, so be it!

Learning psychology is good. So is sociology, the art of groups. It can help you understand and hone the gifts you bring to interactions.

When I did corporate VPN support for a living, Crowdstrike was one of the usual suspects, another annoying piece of shoddy, intrusive endpoint-security garbage that we looked for on end-user PCs when trying to identify what stupid thing was breaking their VPN client. So for me, years before this latest incident, Crowdstrike was already synonymous with things breaking. A direct result of our free-market system is that countless unaccountable private firms are now single points of failure for hospitals, ISPs, and governments. If the average person had any idea how many such private single points of failure existed, they would probably scream.

None of our systems were interrupted, including our Emergency Alert System, which is satellite based. I learned about it from FEMA. “Are you okay? Here's something I realized about socialist countries. See...most of them were full of nonwhite people and also had governments that protected women's rights, and even queer rights in some cases--like East Germany, whose dissolution was actually a disaster for German queer and trans rights. Their supreme court once literally ruled that being queer is natural and that "homosexuals therefore do not stand outside of socialist society." (For some reason Americans never hear this in school.) So if you ask the men of the cold war years--the 50s through the 70s in particular--to describe a country, most likely with majority-nonwhite rule, where women had equal rights and free reproductive healthcare protected by the government, would they not have called it godless tyranny? Would a functioning democracy with legal protections on women's rights and access to abortion, and possibly even court rulings explicitly protecting queer people, not have been the worst nightmare of the American white man of 1960? When i realized this, I realized that the propagandists who wrote this narrative had every reason to lie about the communist bloc--because their policies of gender and racial equality were actually among the things those men would have called "communist oppression". Just as American religious-right figures call it a "violation of their religious liberties" that they can't persecute queer people, they called it "communist oppression" when e.g. the Catholic church couldn't take away Polish women's right to choose because the mean Marxist state protected it.
