Great thank you such a useful discussion as I try to move from documentary sketches to expressing how I have experienced my time in the landscape 😊

Myhusband was born in 1945 in a castle in Matlock Darbyshire. Not sure of the spelling. His Mum was evacuated because of the war to this castle Woolsley Castle. Anyway, it was on his Birth certificate and filed somewhere. I want you to know how much you have inspired me to be myself. I am totally loving the whole impressionistic atmospheric work you do. I wish I lived closer somI could plein air. I live on a river in Paris Ontario Canada. Today, it was raining and horrible out on the river. I painted my best pics ever just inspired by the grey and white and ochre and green gold and burnt sienna. Truly, i did 5 on multi media paper in 20 minutes and they are like a prize. I will collage them tomorrow. Thank you so much. I believe I had to journey to be able to do this. It isn’t like I can watch what u do and do it. I had to work hard for many years to get it. Thanks Lewis for freeing me up. My roots are from Bedfordshire although I am Canadian. Best regards, Linda

This is so true. Spending time in places that facinate me, exploring and photos all give me inspiration in my work.

I take my own photographs, from different stances and times of the day....I do mainly mountain and sky.....more sky than anything else because they are facinating, and constantly changing.

Extremely interesting talk. I think it is a very delicate way of thinking about a place. Sometimes our interpretation of a place or landscape is really inspired by a nuance we have seen or felt. At least the seems to be what happens when I paint or sketch along the Pecos River in New Mexico. At times it is difficult to extract this feeling. Extract is not the correct word, but you get my meaning.

Such an excellent Idea for a workshop! Help ween some of us off unhelpful reliance on photos. Can't get to this workshop, but would be interested if you do another one. Stella

I've been getting away from taking photo's when painting, it is much nicer and I've even noticed more in the environment around me 🙂 also I have been working from memories of trips I went on with family!

Absolutely. It's just another tool though. It's only when you rely on photos as a crutch or because it's too much effort it becomes a problem.

I follow your art work and watching your process has been very helpful. Thank you. I wish, however the audio was louder for I can hardly hear you. Don't know if it is due to recording or my IPad.

I dont think you should work from photos. A photo is only one moment in time and a painting or drawing can be so much more.

Like any tool it depends how you use it.

@@LewisNobleArtist When people work with photo's they end up by copying the photo. The photo becomes the most important and their goal becomes to deliver a painting which is " as good as the photo. I have seen this happen. They dont use their own imagination anymore. The photo stands in their way for being original. And that is an essence in art.
