Thanks as always, Lewis. I quickly picked out that the bottom painting was one I would like just as it is, so I knew you would pick that one to change. And then I loved especially the sort of olive green splay on that particular painting, which you, of course, covered with collage paper. I am learning to let go of not only what I find precious, but what I find beautiful to find a beauty in nature that is deeper and truer. I can see this when I watch you. I don't have it yet when I paint/collage/scratch.

Since I came across you on KZbin I have discovered how collaging relates to sketching and sketchbooks......I have heaps of books and start with good intentions and never continue........ I'm nearly finished my first book with ripped up marks... deconstructed and reconstructed and I love it.... Thanks for being so generous.

hi Lewis what pva glue do you use I cant seem tp get any that are waterproof thanks Trish

It doesn’t matter as long as it’s not ‘washable’ or school glue.

I love to collage but I find that often my collage pieces bubble when I paint over them, even when I take a lot of trouble to make sure they’re well stuck down. I use gloss medium to stick them. Why might this be happening? Might it be because I don’t let them dry properly? Thank you. And thank you for your videos. Always very inspiring. 😊
@LewisNobleArtist4 жыл бұрын
They usually flatten when dry. Probably like I say in the video, it may be that your glue isn't water proof and is softening when working over?
@anneatkinson7554 жыл бұрын
@@LewisNobleArtist Thanks Lewis. Acrylic gloss medium is waterproof, so I suppose it must be that I paint over it before it's properly dry. I might try some waterproof PVA.
@triciarandom4 жыл бұрын
@@anneatkinson755 I take advantage of the bubbles and wrinkles. I might use a knife and slice the bubble and peel back a bit and sometimes encourage wrinkles while pasting on....... great texture to paint over
@m.pilarromeo98774 жыл бұрын
Do you add some water to the PVA?
@LewisNobleArtist4 жыл бұрын
No that would weaken it.
@mcruncleton4 жыл бұрын
I love this. I tend to get wrinkles and air pockets etc when collaging. Never used PVA glue. Do you care if you have wrinkles etc? Does it just add to the texture? Looks like you mark into the glue on top too.
@LewisNobleArtist4 жыл бұрын
Don't usually get air bubbles. If it's a problem, I flatten them out under weighted boards.

Is there any problem with the future paint sticking to the glue you have put on the surface? You said it was water proof. Acrylic or Oil.

I've not had trouble with this. If in doubt, best to test before committing to artwork.

@@martha2mendo ha. Funny. I googled it. We call it Elmers’s glue and we use it in a glue stick. You can use it loose as well. glue sticks work amazingly well. I have told Lewis but it probably didn’t know what I was talking about. Best regards and thanks. Linda from Canada.

PVA is a glue used for a wide variety of domestic, craft and industrial purposes. I buy it from DIY shops or builder's merchant. You can use Gel medium to stick collage but it's wildly expensive to use as glue. PVA is about £15 for 5L whereas Golden Gel medium for example is about £13 for 500ml. That's nearly 10x the price. My motto with materials is 'Save money where you can so you can spend it where you need to'! I wouldn't use PVA glue as a paint medium and don't use paint medium as glue.

The good PVA is going to be archival as well as waterproof. Wish more people undersood that. Speaking of archival, do you worry about the acidity in the plywood? Or is the first layering of gesso enough of a buffer? I'm curious about using cardboad as well. I want to use both wood and cardboard myself. Thanks!
@triciarandom4 жыл бұрын
I seal my wood with gloss medium instead of gesso and only use gesso if I want a ground etc - it's recommended by 'golden' now which has heaps of info on their website. sealing with gloss stops leaching from the wood
@madhabitz4 жыл бұрын
@@triciarandom Excellent - thank you so much!
@LewisNobleArtist4 жыл бұрын
Certainly it's a good idea to seal in the boards. PVA is good for this too! I'd be careful with gloss medium that it's not too shiny so the primer adheres to it and doesn't peel off. I'm sure if you've used this before you'd have noticed any issue though. Thanks
@triciarandom4 жыл бұрын
@@LewisNobleArtist - hi ... just a bit confused when you mentioned primer? I use plywood panels, a coat of gloss medium (or matte but I buy bulk gloss now) as a sealer. Then acrylic paint on that and don’t always gesso. What was the primer you mentioned that might peel off??? I’m going to try pva.... never thought of that. Thanks
@mareequinn59113 жыл бұрын
I paint on acid free card and board. To make sure nothing leaches out, I prep with GAC 100. A golden product. They recommend this as a sealer. Then paint your ground if you want - gesso or texture products. Golden also make one, that will give a paper like surface to your board or card. There are many info vids on their website. I like knowing that my prep / painting is archival. So if you happen to sell, the work will last.
