I was on a one night gambling cruise and did rather poorly playing blackjack that was up until I sat at an empty table on the left end seat and when the dealer would flip his card over (before I acted) to expose his top car, he was showing me his second card! I played for the last 40 minutes of the cruise and by the end was playing 3 spots at four times the bet I was playing when I sat down. The tough part was not hitting 17-18-19 when the dealer had 20 since I didn’t want it to get to obvious. I invited the dealer to have breakfast with me on the ride in to shore but he declined so I just gave him a very generous tip. My hope was to find out when he would be returning to deal on the ship so I could extend my “lucky” streak. I feel as if the casino gives me an edge it’s my right to capitalize on it, just as Ivy did.

edge sorting isn't "almost not cheating" it's 100% not cheating. The casino offered the game, agreed to ridiculous requests by a whale that they wanted to fleece, and lost money because the player was smarter than them.
@joshitheyoshi2533Ай бұрын
By that dumb logic, every kind of fraud is legal because the victim "agreed to it" (because they were deceived). In this case, Phil had a chinese advantage player tell his picked-out chinese dealer, in mandarin so others couldn't hear, to rotate the cards a certain way "for luck" which in reality was to allow for him to cheat via edge sorting. If he didn't do this deception and was able to edge sort anyway - he may have won the legal case. But he used deceit to fraudulently take the property of another.

If you are playing high stakes there's very few new players join, so when 7-8 new players join that table automatically that would ring a bell to the regular. If it was high stakes you each would need to deposit a large sum each one of you, and also getting that off the site. Good luck when they start analyzing your hands and notice that 7 players joined at the same time, all 7 are new players, all deposited a large amount around the same time and then play against eachother at the same time on the same table. They wouldn't even need to analyze the hand history or need any kind of detection to catch that group. Not to mention the huge amount of rake you all needed to pay to make that profitable.

The ethics of casinos blow my mind, they are allowed to rig the game in their favor but when someone notices they messed up they can kick them put and threaten them for being an advantage player who exploits the casinos. One of the classic cheats on the old Mississippi riverboats was as crude as it gets. The cheater would have co-conspirators standing behind the victims. The co-conspirators would see the victims' cards, and signal them to the cheater. A lot of people lost a lot of money that way. Which is why I was shocked one year at the WSOP, when Negreanu was playing at an outer table, with his back to the ropes. I stood right behind him, behind the ropes, and I could see his cards every single time. I would have thought he'd be protecting them carefully, but he wasn't. I guess he was shielding them from the other players, but not from the spectators. I made it a point to never give anything away about his cards by my reaction when I saw them. But it sure made it much more interesting to watch the game.

@Liwet. Жыл бұрын
I think the cards were made by GEMACO. The specific set used by the casino wasn't mirrored horizontally so you could rotate one of the cards 180° and tell it apart from all the other cards. What Phil did was ask the dealer to rotate some of the cards. After the cards got put in the discard tray and then shuffled, he was able to see if a rotated card was coming up next. That gave him an advantage and let him win a lot of money.

This was a bit of a disappointing conversation (more on Lex's part since he didn't do his research). In poker you don't need any special advantage to cheat. Two players can simply play softly against each other (while playing against the rest of the table), and that is already a pretty large advantage. Very curious of how prevalent this is, but maybe as Daniel said, the people who cheat are weak players anyway so that it doesn't matter.

Pretty much all poker websites have rigged hands for action and rakes at the very least. I've been given and been on the receiving end of getting pocket KK or AA multiple times in a row. On top of that usually someone else will flop a set and another will hit a nut flush draw in the same hand. This happens at a way higher rate than real life random poker hands but it's quite common in the online world. There is HUGE incentive for online poker sites to manipulate hands for rake.

You also see hands at a way higher rate when playing online than in real life so it makes sense you would have this happen for more frequently when playing online. I can go to a casino and play for 10 hours and see the same amount of hands as I would playing 4 tables online for 20 minutes.

@@TaylorSmith-cc3vn Yeah that is always the argument. But used to do online and live. Never the kind of insanity witnessed online. Once in a blue moon you'll experience a truly crazy hand where everyone gets a peice of something in live poker. But usually lots of folding and quick hands. You'll have rediculous streaks of hands online that instinctively you know doesn't add up. It'd be interesting to see stats from poker websites of how many big hands happen vs. a simulated random deal of real cards. But I'm sure no such stats exist for a reason.

@@TaylorSmith-cc3vn its the blind on blind action, its the 1 caller to your raise who somehow hits their miracle hand.. 1 2 and 3 outer all day.. yea not likely. Its rigged

@@timberwolves100 That's the thing with statistics - humans are really bad at recognizing true randomness and we love confirmation bias. It wasn't poker related, but in another card game, I could swear I was having a ~5% situation happen to me almost every single time it could happen multiple times in a row. I was sure there's some sort of bug in the algorithm. But when I started properly tracking the results I saw that it wasn't the case at all. You're right that in theory big action pots are useful to poker providers, but somehow artificially increasing these spots to the point where it's truly noticeable and no one catching it is pretty much impossible and stupid considering the potential fines/ruined reputation that would follow.

@@TaylorSmith-cc3vn Plus there would be many hundreds of players playing way higher frequency compared to a physical table. The thing with frequency of bad beats etc online might seem high to one player but very low to another. IMO, it would be more likely to have rigged hands with online poker where you aren't actually playing with real money, as the only way those site make money is when ppl actual pay real money for fake chips. So there is an incentive for them to keep those people on the line longer to spend more money. Real money only poker sites, would simply have a rake from each game played, so less of an "need" to "rig' the hands. Not saying it wouldn't happen, but I would think less likely. One other thing I'd want to know is where the poker site has been setup.

Give it to Phil for the exploit. But guess what, he didn't factor in the legal system. If u gon play the game of finding exploits, don't be surprised if the casino also finds ways. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Lex ..... Respect bro....... Comparing Maradona to Ivy is an ill comparison and analogy ..... Ivy is much more intelligent and methodical as Daniel describes him casino hopping... Maradona was just hyped up on cocaine and is too short to head that ball so he had to reach for it in the moment with that little dwarf arm..... Ones a cheater.... Ones a genius ...

Of course, there is cheating online. Just ask Chris Ferguson.

I like Daniel Negreanu but just because he doesn't know how it is done, doesn't mean it isn't being done, they would have been better off to ask magicians and computer experts.

For online, i can see potential ways around external tools, but they also have detection tools running to identify unusual activity. To get access to everyone else's hole cards would require altering something and everypiece of critical software is monitored and hashes run over them to validate they haven't been touched
