This was such a fascinating and thought provoking interview with several gems, but the thing that really stood out was the last statement Eric made about compassion for everyone. Most people would agree that people who think the "system" is entirely to blame and those that think the "individual" is always to blame are both wrong, but few put it as compassionately as Eric did here. Right or wrong, people are only able to operate at the level that their current programming will allow. Help them upgrade, don't condemn or discard them.

I came here looking for it and I'm finding good humor but no help, just references to why he should be believed like his high patrician taste for commie music. Mr. Weinstein is correct about so many things -- it is inconceivable to me (a Cold War era child of a U.S. intelligence officer) that anyone older than 12 and with an IQ over 80 could possibly overlook the degree of intentional privacy invasion and thought control that our technology sector now affords whomever is willing to pay for access. He is also correct that more of us need to shoulder the burden of speaking up -- to the power structures, and speaking out -- to our fellow citizens, to explain the razor's edge on which we now find ourselves. The American reality grows darker.... 😬

Now I know what people 30 years my senior where saying when I was 25 or so. 'I don't even recognize my country anymore.' I just had a discussion today about interviewing for IT contract work. The recruiter was from India. He mentioned the client was questioning how someone could have all these items on a resume. A business analyst, database developer, back end app developer, front end app developer, unit tester, QA tester and acceptance tester. I explained that once upon a time people my age got out of college joined a company and were given several business areas to respond to any request or issue that came up with any of the systems that supported their functional processes. I told him we did in one job what 5 or 6 people do now. I told him that being asked to work one of the 5 jobs would only allow us to use 20% of what we can do. I said that makes us feel diminished in scope and purpose. He said he understood. I can't blame the current generation for playing out their roles in this scenario. I think Eric is onto something about the dangers of allowing value systems to deteriorate in the name of capitalist exploitation. Its more than just 'where has the middle class gone?'.

"We have the insolence to say: why should we fund you with our taxpayer dollars? No - the question is: are you enjoying your physics dollars?" As Lex would say - beautifully put (hah, this was the 1337th comment)

Awesome. I love Eric Weinstein. The more he can talk publicly the better. The last twelve minutes are pure genius and heartfelt.

Actually, I would say that the tradition Eric mentioned when marrying couple visit WW2 memorials has developed due to a lack of beautiful places to go to. This is not about patriotism. It is to make that day memorable.

The ads in the middle of the conversation are REALLY killing the desire to continue listening. Edit: yeah 2 ads in less than 30 min... that's really pathetic

Something in this conversation for everyone. I haven’t listened to a conversation that opened my perspective this way since I had a debate with my in-laws on abortion 15 years ago. So much to process. Thank you both.

He is fast and loose with the idea of intent. What a fun mind to listen to, it challenges me and I like it.

Holy shit.. that last minute of this podcast about responsibility hit me deep as hell. i have had teachers, parents, family, friends, and bosses ALL completely negate responsibility, as have I, yet there are so many times i recognize that i am putting too much of it on my own shoulders. what a profound point Eric brought up there. WOW. woah.

I was recommended this video through KZbin's algorithm after watching both of these men appear on Joe Rogan's podcast. I'll definately be following Eric for the philosophy, logic and wisdom we need for moving forward.

There's actually something profound about what you just said. You picked up the aesthetic before the full understanding. This is a powerful intuition, you know a great idea before you know why.

That analogy about the transference of kinetic energy to potential energy in terms of fighting and tensions, was a great one. I think that's also in alignment with statistics and some general arguments by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and that systemic removals of mild perturbances lead to higher level destructive forces in the long run. That wouldn't bode well for us, if true.
