Great video! I followed your steps and got my struts swapped out today…one thing ironman didn’t show is that we will have to compress the KDSS hydraulic cylinder with a floor jack on the driver side in order to drop the lower control arm from the passenger side. Otherwise there is no way I can take it out with my 130lb weight 😆…hope this helps for others.

Hi Jimmy, I'm happy you were able to get it done. Thanks for the tip, even with my 250+ lbs I was barely able to get the arm to drop enough. Now I know what to do for my next upgrade 😎

Nice install and a great look. I put in 6112s in front a few months back at a 2” lift with 650lb coils and tricked my air suspension up 1” in back. It has worked out great off-road, a bit harsher than stock on road. Will likely eventually go with kings or BP-51s but look forward to your long term review.

Hey Rob! Thanks my friend. Sounds like you got the heavy duty coils. I actually found one of my rear shocks was blown when i was doing the lift. Glad i did it otherwise i been driving with a blown shock. Ride is a little harsher on road but less body roll and nose dive.

Nice! Im about to order Bilstein 6112 #47-281202 for my GX460 with the bilstein/eibach heavy duty springs. They are good for 150-220 extra lbs up front. I thought #650 may be too much. Do you know remember which clip setting you used in front? Thanks

@@cybrah With the 650# springs I use the lowest setting (least amount of lift) and got 1.7" of lift up front after settling. I have the luxury/drivers assist package which weighs about 150lbs more than the regular GX along with about 300 lbs in mods (Aluminum Victory sliders, full K9 roof rack, aluminum skids etc). I'm always really glad to have the heavier springs when loaded out for a full week out in the desert with a couple of passengers on board. I found unloaded they do exhibit some harshness on smaller bumps but they really eat up big whoops better than stock.

I decided to go with Bilstein 6112s set at 1.6" and 1/4" spacer to get 2" in front and 5100s with 1-1.25" Dobinsons springs in rear. I ordered the fronts assembled and had a local shop install them. When I got it back it was 4" up! The only thing I could figure out was they came with heavy springs - sure enough Bilstein confirmed the spring number was the 700lb version. Sucks I spent $500 for install + alignment and now it has to come out!!!!! Hopefully the dealer I bought the kit from will help make it right... Meanwhile, not going to drive it with the severe angle on the CVs

Dang, that sucks! Hopefully they can send you the correct springs without giving you a hard time. I got the medium weight springs since I have my whole setup (fridge, aux battery, drawer, bunch of plywood, water tanks on the roof, 33" tire & wheel on the rear door, cargo box on the roof) sitting in the rear, in the front I only have a heavier AGM battery and steel skid plates but once I add a front bumper and winch I'll know I'm good since I already have the medium weight springs.

@@DIYSpeedGarage Update: Talked to Josh at 1stGenOffroad, he's sending new set with correct springs and covering the install at my local shop!!!! Couldn't have asked for more. I did the install of the Dobinsons springs and Bilstein 5100s in the rear and installed Kaon shock guards. I should be all set once the new 6112s with get here. I installed the Victory 4x4 tailgate table. Had a hard time with the tabletop going into the molle panel (and tech support doesn't answer or return a call). CVBI has 10% off spring sale and cheap flat rate S&H - looking hard at Covert bumper or sliders. I was waiting to see how much clearance I gained before deciding to cut on bumper. Yeah, I think I wanted to keep the GX a 50/50 vehicle, 50% off road capable and 50% on road duty. I feel like if I took it any higher I'd sacrifice a lot more on-road comfort/stability. I know 3" doesn't sound like a lot more but believe me that extra 1/2-3/4" height changes things drastically. That's just my opinion. Although I do think I will be upgrading the suspension to the OME BP-51 setup in the near future, not because I don't like my current OME Nitrocharger setup, I just want to try the BP-51 setup and be able to have that adjustability on the fly.

I'm still mulling over which lift kit to get. I was wanting something that didn't stiffen it too much because I'm not planning to add a bunch of weight for overlanding gear and I was less radical on tires (Wildpeak 265/65R18). Thinking Dobinson - possibly Eibach. Probably 2" in front and 1" in back. Your choice was tried and true. In retrospect are there other kits you would consider? BTW I saw some people jacking up the KDSS side of the sway bar to relieve pressure on passenger sway bar. I installed MTS/Crawl (thanks to you) and DR KDSS switch - which I like as a "comfort mode." Trying to be careful that mods don't drive other consequences. For example - did your lift cause you to add spacers to rear KDSS mounts. I've seen them hitting the panard bar on some kits
@DIYSpeedGarage
@DIYSpeedGarage Жыл бұрын
Ok so if you can afford it and want to get the best and most customizable suspension setup then I would recommend going with the OME BP-51 setup. That is a suspension which has been tried/tested/developed in some of the most diverse and rugged terrain in the world: Australia. I don't care what anyone says but those are the best in the market. Basically having the BP-51 setup is a one and done setup. You want soft plush them you can adjust them to do that, you want firm and precise you can adjust them to that. Don't get me wrong, the dobinsons are also awesome and probably number two in my opinion but still not as customizable/adjustable as the BP-51's As for the KDSS spacers, yes I have installed a set but not because I had an issues, I just wanted to have them in case of the rubbing you mentioned, why not have that peace of mind.

@@Maximus01776 I'm running comfort springs, no extra weight in the front or rear. It's too stiff when I first installed it, like driving a sport car! After a few thousand miles driving and adjusted air pressure to 30 psi for the tires, now it's just a little bit stiffer than the stock suspension which is okay for me. Some people said it rides stiff because of 3'' lift, if you get a smaller lift it will be softer. Next is my dual battery setup, basically installing all the power accessories (lighting, solar panel, control box...) and I also need to install my awning (still waiting on the brackets). I'll probably go to my mechanic and do a colab video with him on that install video. Electrical stuff is not my forte 😁

I've got a Dobinson's lift kit and UCAs that I'm ready to install. I'm a novice mechanic so Im a bit nervous and don't want to be without my GX too long. How long do you think it took you?

How much did it cost to lift your GX460?
@DIYSpeedGarage
@DIYSpeedGarage Жыл бұрын
With my setup/hardware it was around $1700, that's pre-covid normal prices. Now who knows how much it'll cost. The kit with the springs and socks was around $1k and the upper control arms were around $650, if you count the KDSS spacers then that's also extra. Labor was free obviously 😎

heres a hack for getting the struts in: use straps (or even zip ties) on a compressed strut

You meant that the Ironman video didn't post a video on how to remove the "passenger side" and not the driver side cause the video actually shows them removing the driver side. Would've been easy to just use a floor jack to compress the driver side sway bar, that would've helped you install the passenger side strut easier without you putting all your weight to make it fit. Good stuff though!
@DIYSpeedGarage
@DIYSpeedGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Yes.... i meant they didn't show the passenger side getting done, only the driver side 😉 I did use the floor jack on the rear but didn't know it could be done that way on the front 😆 Don't forget I'm just a DIY beginner when it comes to any mechanical skills, i work with what I've got 😁

What size lift and is an upper control arm required?
@DIYSpeedGarage
@DIYSpeedGarage Жыл бұрын
I think it was 2.5 rear and 2 & 1/4 in the front. Don’t think it’s required but I would recommend it if going above 2” lift so you can get your alignment within spec.
