Henry Royce of Rolls Royce said a skilled mechanic is better than any torque wrench. I agree and have almost never used one. After well over 60 years the feel acquired for nut/ bolt tightening is second nature. I really appreciated the slow and thorough description here, especially the diagram showing the overflow arrangement. Very valuable video. Thanks.

I have only used a torque wrench for wheels and suspension parts, which definitely will suffer if overtightened, and can fail if not on tight enough.

So people sometimes get lost under the car. The easiest way to find a Toyota transmission fill plug is to look for the WS stamped on it. Toyota transmission always have the fluid time printed on the fill plug so you know what kind of fluid they take. All the current Aisin / Toyota transmissions use ATF WS, but some of the older ones took different fluids. The Aisin transmissions have a notorious reputation for being super cranky when they are low on fluid, and the factory makes mistakes. Or someone pissed around with the transmission when they were the previous owner, or maybe even during the PDI for some reason, so checking the fluid level smart.

@@hwnboi11 That's crazy. When was the last time it was changed? I guess they're not fixing the problem. Probably some supplier in China cranking out junk.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I had a mechanic work on my car to replace the filter and fluid, and he filled the ATF through the over flow plug and said it was okay to fill the fluid through there as well. I wanted to confirm if that is indeed okay or does it have to be filled from the 14mm fill plug on the side? I hope they didn’t mess up my transmission

How often should one replace the transmission fluid? Or transfer case fluid? I have a 2022 Lexus IS 350 AWD 6spd. Previously, I had a 2019 Camry, and I did the transmission fluid change at 60k.
@TheYotaChannel11 ай бұрын
Toyota says they are "lifetime" fluid, and you are not required to change it, but to have it "inspected." On my Rc350, i plan on doing it at 100k
@joejaeg3r6 ай бұрын
great video. wish i found this earlier but more or less i followed the same exact process yesterday. i noticed though that there’s a rattle noise towards the end of higher rpms (2015 350) only when driving (not in park). i’m wondering if it’s a heat shield that got bent when i was squeezing a socket on the fill plug?

Nice work! It's time for me to service our 2013 GS350 F Sport. Gonna do it on jack stands... I was thinking about filling trans, running engine and drain again to get more fresh fluid in. Your thoughts? Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts.

Hey bro I have a 2008 Lexus is350 with 140k miles and never changed the trans fluid and recently I noticed there is slippage when I’m accelerating it’s not showing any codes. Is it safe to do a drain and fill ? Will i make it worse if I do ?
@omfgwtfbbq905 ай бұрын
How about the ATF filter? Where is it? Inside the oil pan? How often should it be replaced?
@TheYotaChannel5 ай бұрын
The ATF filter is inside the pan. I don't have the service interval in front of me from Lexus. Check out a video i made a while back, changing out a solenoid in a Lexus IS. There, you can get a better visual of inside.

I brought my 2009 Lexus IS350 with 78k miles to the dealership on 9/25/24 for a transmission fluid exchange. They advised against it, saying the fluid is considered 'lifetime' and that it would be expensive. I thought this was somewhat routine maintenance for my car. Any recomendations on this?

Hi, how crucial is the car leveling? i have level gauge, but don't have a lift to get car level would the level gauge be sufficient?
@TheYotaChannel6 ай бұрын
It needs to be leveled. Otherwise, the fluid adjustment level will be off, and the measurement will be inaccurate.

I was thinking of doing this to my 2011 IS250 AWD. I just hit 150,000 miles and I don’t think the previous owner did any service of this kind to the transmission. I talked to a mechanic and they said not to because it was too late and I should just hope for the best. Any advice, should I do this?

They are right, don’t change it now, it will cause slippage.

When you were checking the level i noticed you kept pumping fluid. Do you keep pumping fluid until the old fluid starts looking like new fluid then you wait for a trickle... once the color changed?

Question, i was looking to buy a scantool to check the transmission temp but they are so expensive, but i noticed in video you didn't check any temperature with any device, how do I do that without any device so i dont have to spend $$$.....i kept watching the video over and over but i missed the part where u checked the level without any device telling the trans temperature recommendation?

You are correct. You do need a scan tool to tell the temp. Without a scan tool, you can adjust fluid level after 2-3 mins of running

Dumb question here. When you say a garden pump… you mean just like a bucket with a hose attached to it and a hand pump? Would the hose even fit in the plug hole?

Yes, any hand pumps or transfer pumps will do. Just make sure it's nice and clean. As far as the hose size, 1/2 inch should work

If you need a torque wrench for a drain and fill plug because you fear overtightening or leaving it loose, then i wouldn't recommend trying this yourself.
