Even though the Leafs didn't play very well on Saturday against Montreal, these back to back games are brutal! The Leafs looked tired playing the Habs, as they have played 4 back to back games in October alone. So I think the league should do something about it. Maybe make the number of back to back games played by each team per season equal. Say 7 back to back games per team. That would make it fair.

Oh btw Steve...it WAS 3 breakaways, plus the 2 on 1. Drouin had 2 breakaway goals, and Armia had a breakaway off of the faceoff that started the 3rd period. Incidentally, Armia may have gotten the goal there, but Suzuki deserves a lot of credit on that play for tying up Ceci on the faceoff (preventing him from getting the puck, allowing Armia to take possession), and for boxing Ceci out as he tried to backcheck (without crossing the line into holding or interference territory) so that he was not able to hinder Armia in any way, ensuring that it was a true breakaway. People rave about Suzuki's hockey IQ when they see him make smart plays with the puck that lead to goals or good chances, but Suzuki is just as good without the puck, a quality that few rookies in the NHL possess.

The tired because of back to back games theory fails when you think the Islanders are 12-1-1 on the second half of a back to back- even with travel. You’re also running into the problem that prevents the team from obtaining a stud defenseman. Also- great work with Easter Seals!

Old Connor Brown, you know the guy too slow and unskilled to play for the Leafs, well he got his tenth point tonight in Ottawa. Oh yeah, he's plus 7 on a lousy team. But we Leafs fans don't worry about plus/minus. Just give us skill and analytics. We don't worry about things like defensive awareness. Oh yeah, Naz has 5 goals already and is a plus 2. This season the Leafs & Ottawa play 12 back to backs. Boston, Montreal and Buffalo play 9!!! YES you heard that right. Tampa I think plays just 7 or 8 all freaking season. Last year the Leafs got shafted by the schedule. How is this fair? thats 6 pts - 12 possible on the spread. makes a huge difference if you make the playoffs and where you seed. The first 3 Leafs/Canadiens games, the Leafs play on their 2nd of a back to back in ALL THREE GAMES!
@nikithganan5 жыл бұрын
What is the overall record with your backup in the front half of a back to back? what is it with your starter in the back half? and vice versa? What is the win rate for both of those games? I'm really just trying to ask to see if anyone smarter than me knows. From a hockey perspective, getting two points in a back to back is fine. It still keeps you on pace for the playoffs most of the times. While trying the backup in the front half and starter in the second half, I think you are more likely to get 0/4 points than 4/4 and most of the time you are probably going to get 2/4 points. Can someone smart factcheck me? I say secure the two points, but a championship level team rises to the occasion in the second game. The Leafs become lazier.

Unfortunately, I generally agree with your remarks, Steve. I do have one suggestion for a detail you did not mention in this video: You should say something nice about Kevin Gravel: After two games, I am very pleased with what I have seen from him. He makes Martin Marincin completely expendable. He looks to be a better defender in just about every way. Most critically, he can pass the puck. There is no reason for Marincin to ever dress for the Maple Leafs again as long as Gravel is available and healthy.

As for the coaching thing, I wonder if it would be similar to when Pittsburgh won their first cup with Mike Sullivan. The first half of the season was awful because they had a coach that didn't fit with their team. They switched to Mike Sullivan, who I believe was their "Sheldon Keefe" and they went on to be insane and win the cup. Might not happen if we go through the coaching change, but I agree, Babcock doesn't fit with these guys.
