Stevie was actually holding back. His band mates said in interviews that Stevie respected his idols so much he refused to show them up. Total humble gentleman. They played a gig one night and when Stevie saw BB King opening for him he was pissed and told his agent to never let that happen again. He thought he should’ve opened for BB. Mad respect.

Don’t forget: Albert knew the Essence of the blues is less, not more. He praises Stevie early In the show that “some people play too fast and got no soul.,,” etc. So it’s not about SRV “holding back”- that’s part of the reason he’s so good here- the restraint and taste of the masters he learned from. It s the difference between blues and rock sometimes…It’s not a race and not how many notes you play…

Stevie's idols were Albert King & BB King. He worked in countless dives & several bands perfecting his craft. The fact that Stevie was accepted by them & shared a stage meant everything to Stevie. When Stevie was playing with other greats like them, Eric Clapton, Santana he never truly showed out. He respected others. Stevie shared this: "Albert King himself and his wail on the guitar that spoke to me first. And the day came when he was there in front of me, giving a baptismal sermon: "You’ve got it all. You must know that, although your skin is white, you're a black man with a guitar". "Behind a Stratocaster, there exists no more purifying water. Van, if you’ve not watched entire show, I suggest you do. Albert King was known for NOT sharing the stage but Clifford Antone asked him but had to ask again because Albert just flat out said NO! Stevie was persistent and the blues players did trust Clifford so Albert came around. Then they did this special. Stevie was hungry, constantly wanting to learn and you can see his humility in this special show they did. Watch the entire special; you’ll love it.

I've seen alot of comments that have said Jimi Hendrix was Stevie Ray's influence but the only time he mentioned Jimi Hendrix's was when people compared him to Hendrix but Stevie Ray always said his #1 influence was his brother Jimmy Vaughan. He never named #2 because he loved and respected all the great blues performers, Albert King was actually Stevie Ray's godfather and when Stevie would ask him about that Stevie had a BIG smile on his face he was very proud. The love and respect they had for each other was beautiful, watch Albert King's face he has a big smile while watching Stevie play.

You should watch the whole performance. Albert didn't know who Stevie was before the show, but when Stevie walked in he remembered him. When Stevie was a teenager, Clifford Antone of the infamous Antone's blues club in Austin asked Albert if Stevie could come on stage & play with him. Albert was Stevie's idol & became a father figure for him.

What do I think about this? Hot dam. I can't even believe what I'm listening to. This is a National Treasure! Two absolute greats jamming with each other. Albert King's silky voce distracts you, then Stevie just lets loose in the middle. So Albert decides to go light up while he's of somewhere in Stevie Ray Vaughan land. Looked like Stevie didn't notice he got up. I loved every second of this and it's goin on my playlist. I think they're both incredible, but I have to say Stevie is my guitar hero+GOAT. ☮️to all

This whole show is an absolute picture of Teacher and Student, Master and Apprentice... When they first approached Albert about this show he refused cause he was like.. WHO is stevie ray vaughn.. and his band was like.. dude that is a little stevie!! And the rest is history. Albert simply knew him as little stevie. There is another part in this where Albert gets Stevie to play Pride and Joy. I love how Albert just looks like the proudest papa ever this whole show.

I saw Albert King and Stevie on the same bill. Albert opened and Stevie headlined. You may notice the Albert is a lefty, just like Jimi Hendrix, but he did not switch the strings as Jimi did - so Albert is effectively playing all chords and notes "upside-down" - which is just unbelievable. While players bend a note up, Albert pulled it down.

This is one of my favorite tunes and performances by Albert King and Stevie. Quite a story about the production of this album and glad to see you play it. I have recommended to others that never picked up on it. Really Albert King is the "King" of the "Three Kings of the Blues" but check out some other songs by the other kings Freddie King " "Ain't No Sunshine"; and one more from BB King "if You Love Me" featuring Van Morrison signing with him on his Duces Wild Album. Van this is real music I seen SRV live in Daytona Beach in 1987 and I love the blues music You can feel this music in your soul When he died in that helicopter crash We truly lost one of the greatest musicians that has ever been and He was very good man to He would help anyone Albert King was his god father Albert did not like to perform with anyone until SRV came along He could not believe that SRV could play like this at such a young age SRV loved Albert King and he looked up to this man with so much respect It’s a crying shame that no one plays this kinda music anymore This was the definition of real music My favorite music of all I like all kinds of music but there’s nothing like the blues

This was recorded one night after Stevie performed a concert he left the concert venue and headed to the studio where they had a big jam session. Interesting fact Stevie was either 16 or 17 when he went to Antonio’s in Austin Texas and Albert King was playing Stevie bugged the owner until he asked Albert of little Stevie could sit in with him finally Albert said yes thinking he was going to get Stevie on stage and make a fool out of him but every time Albert played some cords Stevie come right back and played them better and the funny thing is Albert made them up and they was friends ever since then .

It’s a shame that we lost one of the best guitar player’s that has ever picked up a guitar. I had the pleasure of seeing SRV twice, Once in Daytona Beach in 1987 and once in Atlanta Ga. In the fox theater in 1986 It’s amazing that SRV sounded better live than in a Studio How many people can say that He devoted him whole life to the blues and payed his respects to the great blues players that started it all He loved Albert King SRV said that Albert was his Godfather and he was so humble and gave his respect and credit to all of the legendary blues men that came before him We truly lost something special when he died in that helicopter crash in 1991 But his music will never die Love your reactions Van you are the man

Man, I watched your video when you discovered Stevie. You were blown away just like everybody else that has ever heard him play. Albert King was Stevie's main guitar idol and mentor. Albert is the OG. Pay close attention to Albert when he plays and you will notice that not only is he left handed, but his guitar is strung upside down with the little strings on top. I don't remember seeing anyone else play like Albert. Jimi Hendrix was left handed, but his guitar was restrung in the normal configuration. BTW, the whole IN SESSION video is worth a watch.

They work that 'Texas Fl00d' riff throughout many of the songs; it's a nice common thread through their music when they include it. Also, Albert King is his mentor & main influence; you can even hear Mr. King mention when he was given word that some kid wanted to sit-in with him. Wish there was more of their extemporaneous sessions from over the years. I also really like seeing Albert gettin' after him, telling him to play it LOUDER; that's where he got it from. =D It's really cool to get into SRV, then arrive at the Source. And you know, people will say he made those faces as part of a show; but that was just him in that Zone.
