A really nice plasma was rescued from the recyclers. This one needed to be turned on about 10 times for it to stay on. Definitely a power supply issue.

Hi 12voltvids. Joining caps together is a excellent job and I am sure you have checked them, I have often done the very same and now they are 25 volts so it's another plus it does not matter that they are pulled arts or not, I will never use 6.3 volt or 10 volt caps and with joining them together usually are a much lower ESR anyway, it's a thumbs up from me as it's the way to go,👍 they will be perfect so excellent work as usual and I don't have to say they will last much longer but you already know that, I agree plasma ok they are a heavy set but much better than LCD or LED do not last, so great work an thanks for the video. Kind regards from Jim. 👍👍👍

I guess they put the two 3300 µF caps in parallel to get lower ESR than with just a single 6800 µF (6600 µF doesn't exist) capacitor. So you could say you've improved it even further by putting in all the small caps in parallel. Their ESR can go up quite a bit until the TV will complain again :)
@12voltvids9 жыл бұрын
DrCassette Very true, but I think they probably put them in series to get the capacity as opposed to lowering the ESR, because if it was just obtaining a low ESR they would have put a bunch of them in parallel, and likely chokes in series with the caps.
@DrCassette9 жыл бұрын
They probably used many other 3300 µF caps in the set, so putting two extra ones on the parts list would have been cheaper than one single 6800 µF cap. The 6600 µF are well within the wide tolerance range of a 6800 µF electrolytic cap (-50% and +100%).
@12voltvids9 жыл бұрын
DrCassette Didn't see any other 3300@10v in the set. Had they put in 16v or 25v rated parts they would have never failed in the first place.But then the cost difference between 10v and 16v is going to put the company into bankruptcy, so lets go cheap, make it last past the warranty so we can sell them another one in 5 years.

For that matter I am really not all that interested in fixing any electronics these days. You probably wouldn't know that from all the videos I have put up lately. I did repairs for 20 years full time. Now I work in telecom and just work on electronics when I am bored basically. I certainly don't do it for the money as there isn't any to be made. I do it so I can make a video for the yt channel because I make much more from the views than from the repair. Much of the stuff I fix is my own stuff too that people give me as it is on its way to recycling. I fix and if I can't sell I donate it to value village where they put it in the thrift store.

I used to have a Relisys 42" plasma TV that worked fine. Then suddenly the power wouldn't stay on. I was told it was caused by a chip on the power supply. After servicing, the chip needs to be changed to tell the power supply that the set has been serviced, otherwise the power won't stay on.

I added fans to my video capture card/DVR and to keep any noise down I built a simple circuit that varies the speed of the fans as needed so they only run fast as needed. Only on really hot days do they crank up. So I hardly ever hear them on my security computer. I also added that feature to a 5 way splitter/amplifier so I can run 5 monitors off of one computer. that way I can have a monitor for my camera system in all my rooms. Yes I tried just two monitors on a Zotec GTX 760 and it only lasted a month. This sytem has lasted 6 years so far If I only had the room inside of these monitors I would add fans as well

Thank you for all the good information. Recently I found a Samsung 50 inch 1080p plasma on the side of the road, alongside a bunch of trash. Made in Sept, 2007, this set was totally dead. Turned out one of the four 12 amp power supply fuses was bad. I replaced that and it started right up. It looks wonderful. I picked up an original remote on Ebay. From research, I found that this set has four 2200 mfd 10 volt capacitors on the power supply board that cause problems. I replaced them with quality 2200 mfd 25 volt capacitors. Other than being a power hog, I'm very pleased. Your video makes me feel a lot better that I did the right thing by saving this set. How would you compare a plasma set to the new 4K sets coming on the market? Regards, Tom
@12voltvids9 жыл бұрын
THOMMGB Plasma still have better contrast, and the contrast realm makes the picture.4K can look specular, but they don't have the contrast ratio, but they do excel in resolution. The holy grail of displays is OLED, or as it is sometimes known in the pone arena Super AMOLED.OLED, like plasma the pixels produce the light rather than operate as a shutter to block the existing bright backlight.So you can have totally black pixels. A 4K OLED is what I am saving for.They will be out this fall.
@THOMMGB9 жыл бұрын
12voltvids Thank you for your very detailed answer. I suspect a big screen OLED TV is going to cost a pretty penny. I'd like to get one, but I'll have to wait for the price to eventually come down. Or, I can skip all that waiting stuff if I win the lottery. :-) Regards, Tom

THOMMGB OLED is still pretty expensive. 4 grand for a 1080p 55" but there are some 65 both 1080 and UHD coming out soon, and in a few years they will be affordable. Till then I will stick with my plasma.

+12voltvids zI have three old Panasonic Plasmas that I got cheap and repaired. The 50" 1080p set has a jaw dropping beautiful picture. We had fiber optic internet and tv installed recently and the installer commented that it had the best picture he's ever seen. Five exhaust fans and a full complement of boards. They don't make lcd's half that good. And a panel half life rated at 60k hours it may last forever.

+James Last absolutely. I have 3 Panasonic plasma. A 2010 42" 1080p in my studio, a 2012 50" 1080p I got for free. Beautiful picture. A 2004 42" 480p SD set not HD but looks great. Got that free too. A 63 1080p Samsung, when Samsung made a full 1080. I was then given a 42 LG and a 50 Samsung 720. Got them working. Most recently a 50" 3d that needs a y sustain and another 50" 1080 that was brought for repair back at Xmas . Abandoned. So I think I am good with plasma sets for a long time. I like the oled and would like to get a 4k oled so I can watch my videos in 4k but these plasma just look too good. I install fiber TV for a living so I get to see everything out there and nothing compares to the plasma for picture. It was the cost to make them that spelled the end of production, nothing else. Uneducated sales people helped too.

+Turnip Gaming97 Not from what I have seen they don't. Most people are uneducated in this field. They buy what is cheap. Have no choice as they don't make plasma anymore, and it was the production cost that spelled the end of plasma. Led back light looks like crap. Contrast varys as you move side to side or up/ down. Why do you think the gimme of the curved screen. To mask uniformity issues. Curved screen is just a way to fool people. The only technology that can match a plasma and is superior is oled.
@turnipgaming97478 жыл бұрын
Not everyone can afford a plasma TV if they still made them they would cost nearly 2k also to me plasma tv's flicker which they strains my eyes. I've seen LCD tv's that can put out 4k picture quality which they have to since the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 came out and for the people who like awsome picture quality so they can watch movies in 4k that's my opinion that's all I'm saying
@12voltvids8 жыл бұрын
+Turnip Gaming97. 4k was one of the reasons that plasma production ended. Just to get to 2k was serious engineering challenge. 4k on a screen under 100" would have been technically impossible considering the complexity of a plasma panel. Lcd technology has improved and they can manufacture extremely cheaply as they use ic manufacturing technology. Photo etch glass essentially. Oled is superior in every way, but it is exceptionally expensive when you go beyond phone or tablet screen sizes. It does yield the absolutely best picture though. I have oled on my phone, tablet and my cameras all have oled screen and eyepiece. My next TV will be oled, and 4k. The problem is right now it is only available in a curved screen, a that is a deal breaker. The 10,000 price tag is also a little steep. I'll wait a few years an keep my plasma TVs running till then. So if the 600 hz plasma flicker bothers you the 50 or 60 hz refresh rate on the old CRT must have driven you crazy.

+Turnip Gaming97 In Canada, the new 65" 4k oled TV from LG is selling the 9,999.95! The 55" HD version from last year is still 3 grand. A very steep price for a TV, but there is nothing else on the market that is comparable yet. LG have an exclusive agreement in place with the panel developer currently, I I wouldn't expect any huge price drops on that technology for a few years. If you get th chance to see one you will be blown away by the image. I hav yet to see anything remotely close to this quality of picture, but being a photographer I have a pretty good eye for image accuracy. It's at the top of my wish list.
