Question for all, when recording with the HD audio recorder, if you're in the mono mode it seems to record from the mic at the bottom of the phone. Is it possible to have it record at the top, for say recoding vox pops without having to flip the phone and have the screen controls upside down?

The charge port on my V20 fried so I upgraded to the V40 and... wow. It's amazing. I ALWAYS protect my phones with Otterbox Defender cases. Yeah, it hides the beauty and makes the phone so much thicker, but it's saved my phones SO many times. And when I take the case off, I THEN appreciate the look & feel. For a minute. Then I put it back in the case.

Somehow I unintentionally ended up being a LG fan boy. First it was my LG tone platinums for apt x hd, then had to get the LG v30 to use that codec, and now I'm going to get the LG pk5. Then I got a LG 4k tv but then I had to get a LG 4k player since they're the ones that has Dolby Vision, and why not go full circle. Now LG oled TV's are going to include WiSa technology so it can stream Dolby hi-fi audio to home theater systems wirelessly. Seems they care the most about audio/video which I'm all for.

Thank you for being the guy who goes so far to review LG phones. The V10 was my choice after Samsung gave me no option for removable battery after my Note Edge. The wide angle rear camera moved me to the V20. Now I have a V30 with a sealed battery, but the manual camera controls and wide angle and hifi quad dac keep me here. LG makes fine phones. I got a new V35 on sale from Amazon, it's that interim model that one carrier requested from LG - no notch, no telephoto lens. It's a great device, comparable to Samsung. LG forgot who the target audience for V series is.If V is for video,then you dont need to focus on things like portrait lighting,cinemograph etc.Mr mobile said that too much focus is placed on gimmicks rather than perfecting the fundamentals and he is right about this.A video phone like LG v40 can't even stabilize a 4k 60fps footage where a non-video phone like Op6 does it very well.Its a shame

I know that for me, as someone who listens to many genres of music, nothing beats the quad DAC on LG's V-series. It was my favorite thing about the V30 when I owned it, along with the great battery life I had, albeit as a lighter user. What I couldn't handle about the phone was the bad reception on T-Mobile here in NYC, as well as LG's pittance of a theme engine. With other OEM's seemingly (finally) making 4000 mAh batteries standard, there's no excuse for LG to remain stagnant in that area. No one ever complains about having larger batteries. If LG had even half of Samsung's theming options and a larger battery with improved reception, there's no question what my choice would be. As it stands now, however, I'm leaning towards Samsung again, which hurts, considering my love for the quad DAC.

I feel after giving LG multiple chances and liking them for what they offer enough overall for me to outshine the competition. I had the G7 and loved the audio capabilities, got spoiled with the haptic motors, and the pro modes for the camera, but the fact is I slowed down for me after a month of usage, didn't take photos as well, and the battery life was just average to bad. If you are a very niche user I think this phone would be great. However I personally moved on to the Note 9.

Shout out for the G Flex 2 at the end! I'm an old school LG fan who's been underwhelmed by LG of late. In fact, I still miss the buttons on the back! And I also think that LG really missed out on an opportunity to make the curved phone (G Flex) a hit. Just like curved TVs and monitors, I believe that the G Flex line could have been successful if LG had only handled it all better and not given up too soon. The battery and throttling issues on the G Flex 2 with the Snapdragon 810 really hamstrung it. But imagine a larger OLED phone with that curved display including LG's audio prowess and buttons on the back. I'm telling you, it would have been stellar at media consumption and a truly successful phone line/differentiator! Personally, I still prefer the curved display of the G Flex to the curved edges on Samsung phones, which still seem like a gimmick to me, (with limited utility that cause glare and touch issues). I have an LG Stylo 4 right now. I'm a stylus fan and didn't want to pay $1000 (or more) for my phone. Obviously, the Stylo 4 is a budget phone, but for what it is, it's great! I especially love having a built-in stylus.

I honestly don't think anybody is going to miss the design portion of the review. I think we've ooohed our last ahhhh over that stuff. It would be nice if we came back to it when/if a company actually improves the usability of the product through design instead of just wowing us with where tech is. Apples' Face ID is wondrous tech to be sure, but it I just don't see why it's better than a fingerprint when its 'superior security' is debatable.

I've rocked almost every LG phone since the G2, and every V series phone so far. The V30 was a fantastic phone, but my only complaint was that the auto brightness at 0% would make the screen impossible to see. I had to manually adjust the brightness at night so I could see anything. With the V40 I don't have that problem anymore. What's interesting though is the auto brightness stops at 15% on the V40, so if the V30 only dimmed to 15%, it probably wouldn't have been an issue. The 5 cameras are cool (sort of gimmicky), but the telephoto lens doesn't serve a purpose for me. I've used the telephoto camera maybe once (with bad results). I have used the widescreen camera a ton since the V20 introduced it, so glad to still have that and see it get improved every generation. Battery life is fantastic for my use. In the few months since I got the V40, I don't remember ever having to charge mid-day. As an example, I've been using my V40 all morning on and off (between 8AM and 11AM) and I'm still at 90% battery. That's with 1 hour of screen usage and 2 hours of total usage. I usually make it a full day with about 30-40% left, which is the best I've seen on a phone yet from the LG series.

I bought this phone (refurbished) compatible with my carrier for $280 (free shipping) off eBay. I wanted an upgrade, but I wasn't paying $900-1000 for an S10, note, or iPhone X. So I went with LG. I was going to purchased the V30, but read the V40 fixed most of the issues with the V30. So far so good. A much needed upgrade from my Galaxy S7 edge that ran pretty slow. Esp when I'm playing Madden mobile.

Just picked up the G8 instead. Snapdragon 855 and better battery life. Also smaller, better for one handed use. Had the V30 before and loved it. I'm sure the V40 is still a great phone. For the kind of discount you can get on an LG, it's a no-brainer not to get phone. These other phone companies are just ripping us off, specially Apple lol. Heard iPhone 11 still don't even have an OLED screen, SMH. I liked OnePlus also but they definitely don't have discounts like LG, while they offer less features.

Thanks for the long-term review. There's a lot to like in regards to the V40 but it's discouraging to hear once again how you can get real good pictures with their manual mode (I have a G6 so I'm very familiar with it). The reality is that the vast majority of people shopping for a cell phone are looking for something they can just use as a point and shoot camera and not have to start trying to see what the ISO and so on should be set to for best results. I'm not looking to single out LG on this as every manufacturer's auto mode camera has its faults (Samsung and their ongoing white balance issues) but it seems that when it comes to their software LG does less with more when it comes to the hardware they are putting on their phones.

Could you tell the difference? I trust your ears because of your reviews haha. I want the phone to record footage of music gigs and rehersals and I would prefer a better audio recording than a slightly better vídeo. (Also considering the reduced price of the G7). Nice review. Let me just ask straight up then. I currently have the LG G5. I have no real issues with it other than its battery life now and data storage size. 32GB is terrible when you have a large library of music and also play lots of phone games. I'm in the process of considering an upgrade. I cannot decide if I want the G7 or the V40. The only real "intense" use of my phone on any consistent basis is games. Pokemon Go is a big one. And then a handful of others. I am not a photographer, so the V40's 5 cameras will be wasted on me, but I do like its size and quality. So what do you think?

@T-Tez Music Thanks for the reply. And yeah, I ended up getting the V40. I don't do enough on my phone to give it a fair evaluation myself, or to find if there are any issues, but from what I HAVE used it for, I like it. Serves me better than the G5 did.

I recently switched from my Note 9 back to my iPhone 8+ because I didn't like the Note as much as I thought I would (battery and the camera on mine weren't great) but I still would like to get another phone and I was looking at LG among a couple of others. I'll try and help because I'm in the same position as you. The G8s has reduced specs, the G8 is difficult to source in some markets ( the same goes for its accessories), the V40 is last year's tech but is significantly cheaper. Here in Australia, the most viable option of the three is the V40.

What do you think of the Spigen case? When it's coupled with my quad dac, getting the volume to move enough to notice is very difficult. Hard button presses + very sensitive dac = annoyed. And yeah, the Google assistant button is in the way. But I'm coming from a Nexus 6P where all the buttons were on one side and man do I miss that!!! And coming from a 6P I'm all like y'all need to stop complaining about a little notch. That extra screen real estate for the notifications is freaking awesome. God I miss my front facing stereo speakers though. I was spoiled on those babies.

@GabrielIgnacio 5 жыл бұрын
I'd still keep design but downgrade it to a quick mention, unless a manufacturer does something pretty unique with a particular phone. Frankly, I'd love to see more gradient colors and textured glass in phones like what Huawei's been doing lately to push case makers into making more and better clear cases as you'd have the best of both worlds: protection from drop while still being able to look at the $700+ glass pebble you just dropped cash for. But that's just me as I DO kinda take design into account as well: you're gonna be buying an expensive item that you're gonna be stuck looking at for a while. Might as well like how it looks. As for LG, eh I'm still very cautious when it comes to them. Sure, they make phones with orgasmic audio hardware and having full manual video controls is a treat, specially when playing with Moment lenses and pairing the phone with a Zhiyun Crane (the Smooth phone gimbal line doesn't handle weight as well as I hoped) but their phones still have a few quirks thanks to the software and I'm still not too impressed with auto for both video and images, specially if I just want something real quick to snap that I can throw a few filters onto and post. Either way, I'll still be looking at LG in the future when it's time to upgrade.
