It's definitely called a "spectrum" for a reason. My 9 year old nephew has more of the classic symptoms I think, but he LOVES cuddling and lately has been expanding his eating horizons (but it waxes and wanes daily). I think he is still considered nonverbal, but he knows and says a lot more words than he used to. Last summer he finally started being able to call me by my name (Aunt Bri), and it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard! 💙

I really don't know where I am with my 2 year old. He babbles and has said a couple of words but his speech is definitely delayed. He also flaps books especially which are clear signs but he does do so many other "normal" things. He has great eye contact, smiles a lot, responds to his name most of the time, doesn't point with a finger but his full hand, copies words we might say and copies our play most of the time, walk well, runs etc..... It's such a 50/50 and I pray to god he's ok!

My little one had ALL of those early signs at 2 years old, apart from good eye contact and no problems eating and sleeping (which I`m really really grateful for). He was never diagnosed because he came to live with me as a foster child just after his 2nd birthday and had been neglected before, so the developmental specialist he sees every 6 months always wanted to wait. At 30 months he was still on the level of a 10 months old in many ways, for example playing peekaboo scared him because he thought everything actually disappeared. He had about 50 words and only used "car", "train" and "byebye" regularly. Whenever he felt overwhelmed he fell to the floor and lay on his side, moving his cars around stereotypically and spinning in a circle (Like his first day at daycare - I could see the teachers were immediately worried.) His tantrums lasted for hours and he`s hit his head on the floor whenever frustrated. Now at 4 years old he has almost caught up with other children his age. He doesn`t have a speech delay anymore, likes kindergarten, has friends and rides his bike everywhere. He still doesn`t like noise, is very sensitive to smells and also still pees himself quite often. And when there`s too much going on or we aren`t back home by 6, I can prepare myself for a massive meltdown in the evening. He is still obsessed with cars and knows everything about high speed trains. Also, he doesn`t like stories, for bedtime I have to read him a book about household appliances (he`s especially fond of the dishwasher)... His developmental specialist didn`t see any reason for concern during our last appointment. I wonder if I should get him reevaluated? Or should I just enjoy my little boy that teaches me so much about cars and trains? I know how incredibly lucky I am that things turned out like this and I`m grateful every single moment.

My son had the exact same results with his level from his diagnosis, he was about 7-8 months at 14 months, and then at 30 months he was rated 10 months.. my son said go several months ago and I was so excited, but then he never said it again after about 6 times saying it that day. My son also doesn’t do sign he has severe fine motor delay, and he used to have no interaction at all, but recently after working on joint attention for a while, his back and forth interaction is beginning to shine through, he touched my mouth the other day while looking when I was making sounds ❤️❤️ Stuff they don’t rate on the age level they are functioning at, but huge steps regardless

I cant calm myself down and i rarely get a little bit upset. I get extremely upset and it escalates so fast from the time of the trigger. When i was a teenager it was thought i couldnt calm myself down because i hadnt learnt the skills by going to an adult when i was young to seek comfort. But Im much older now and still cant self soothe or seek comfort when distressed, from anyone else.

My son just turned 4 and is in speech, walks on his toes, and lines up his cars. But he doesn’t line his cars up obsessively and doesn’t seem to have sensory issues other than he hates showers (normal toddler thing?). He does flap his hands and jump up and down when he’s excited, it’s very brief. I drove myself insane wondering but the the developmental pediatrician and regular pediatrician explained that lots of kids line cars up, he’s not obsessive about it. I guess a lot of NT kids flap their hands too? He’s very social and sweet. Shares to a crazy level without anyone asking. Lol. But he also does this squealing thing off and on, I’m not sure if that’s normal.

Autistic doesn't mean they aren't intelligent, alot of kids on the spectrum are super smart. But also, my child as SPD (not autistm) but its definitely a sign for sensory issues and autism, something alot of OT's look for in the children they work with.

My 18 month old boy shows a lot of these signs sometimes I think hmmm maybe he’s not on spectrum but then other days it’s really obvious. With the pandemic we havnt been able to have someone come observe him but I have informed them and they will as soon as they are able. I feel sad and nervous that he has it and I don’t know why. I guess I just imagined him to have same childhood as me which I’m sure he will be just fine what ever happens. I say this a lot but he reminds me of my son. Moreso as they grow up. Especially with regression, my son will keep catching up then regressing and not improving for months. He's almost 3 and he went from 0 words to 8 word sentences, still struggles to point or follow pointing but he's done a lot of catching up and I just hope he doesn't regress much. He also plays with toys. His improvements really started at 30 months.

A lot of these are my son except he’s regressing a lot and he’s 3.5 years old. For him a psychological eval helped with diagnosis because his therapist (which he doesn’t have anymore because of things she did and has a new one) pushed it off as he was doing it for attention even after he can’t do things he did at 15 months old and is doing things he hasn’t done since 18 months old and then said he was hyperactive along with the 2 other things she diagnosed him with and kept insisting he was doing it was all for attention. Psychological eval had him diagnosed with provisional autism since they can’t do in person assessments like that yet in my state yet but said it is almost certainly autism so diagnosed it as provisional autism. The one who did the psychological eval is the only one that listened to any of my concerns. He was test at 15 months old and put at moderate risk for autism and said to re test at 2 but he went back on track for the most part then within the last 2 months started regressing a lot and very fast but there was a long wait list for that office so I went with a psychological eval instead so I didn’t have to wait for a year or two possibly to get him the helps he needs. I think one of the most important things also is if you sense something isn’t right with your child and a dr pushes it off to get another opinion because if I listened to his therapist he would’ve never gotten the help he will now. Everywhere says his regression was concerning except his therapist which thought everything he did was for attention and that’s all nothing else even the regression.

I can't give an opinion because I have no idea what happened and I didn't follow them close enough post-adoption to really give an objective opinion. And I don't know what caused them to find another home for Huxley. My objective opinion is this: if you can't take care of a child correctly and fill all of their needs, adoptive or biological, then they need to be in someone else's care. That doesn't make it right or wrong but does make it best for their child. Not everyone is meant to be a special needs parent.

Hi Stephanie. I am an RN and my daughter has her masters in counselling and psychology and has worked exclusively with autistic children for years at our children's hospital. Their theory is, that all interventions must start between 2 & 4yrs of age, especially ABA. Anything after that is ineffective and a bandaide solution. She and her team have had great success. What are your thoughts? FYI I am in Ontario Canada.

I do not agree that therapy later is completely ineffective. I will say that intervention begun prior to the age of five is significantly more effective. By anecdotal experience I have found therapy (specifically ABA and CBT) to be tremendously helpful with emotional regulation in my younger son who was not diagnosed on the spectrum until he was 9. His official diagnosis doesn’t exist anymore since the DSM-V update. So I guess he would now be called borderline or mild autistic .... my stepson with the same primary Dx (both boys had a slew of comorbidities) did not receive the same or the same quantity/quality of interventions, despite his being diagnosed at the same age (he’s only three months older than Zack) and his outcomes are markedly less positive. However, some of that can be attributed to his specific constellation of symptoms. As of 2011 (I know, almost a decade ago 😢) there was a lot of research proving the efficacy and importance of early interventions, but I am unaware of any controlled studies specifically geared to measure the efficacy of late onset intervention. I imagine that in order to have concluded that early intervention is of significant importance, however, one of the experimental groups in some of those studies would have to have included late onset interventions as well as a control group. I do not remember any of that information off hand. I’d recommend doing a google scholar search. A lot of studies are inaccessible without paying a lot of money if you aren’t a student or a subscriber to whichever journal they were published in, but often reading the abstract can give you a general idea of the answer you’re looking for.

My 27 month old son is being scheduled for an autism screening... Altho i know he can say Mumma, it's become pretty seldom... I'll sometimes go weeks without hearing it. (Hurts my heart) not using gestures other than doing the hand gesturing thing (i think it's called) He seldomly will make any eye contact or respond to his name...He stims pretty much all day, running back and forth and smashing his body/ head up against couch cushions, repeating this for an hour or more, continuously... He also hand flaps/ wing flaps when he's super exited. He still mouths a lot of things and definitely likes to bite down on things and almost like jolts his body up and down till he's content... He also will bite down me for what I'm guessing is stimulation, regulation type thing... He also just started in with this pinching me behind my biceps area...He doesn't engage in play with others or even show an intrest... He not really into many toys, unless he is able to spin it. He would rather play with a pop it toy or even turn a car toy over to spin the wheels... When he's not happy with his surroundings, he squints his eyes, pokes them with his fingers and will whine... He doesn't use any words, he's not even babbling as of yet. He will make voweling sounds... It can definitely be a little difficult when your child can't let you know their needs, it's a guessing game at times... routine is the only way i know what he truly needs...We're currently working with CDS in which just put out a referral for austim screening... I know we have a very long road ahead but I'm really looking forward to getting things started....

I think your videos are really interesting I am blind but I do like to listen to your videos I also got diagnosed with autism when I was nine years old I did not have any sincerity this function before I was four years old a short while after being sick I develop a sensory disturbances towards the sound of dying batteries literally that sound causes me to become seasick if some part of this comment looks weird it’s because when I am typing something I prefer to use the dictation feature on the iPad because I use voiceover and typing manually it’s really annoying

I’m still in the limbo stage of getting a diagnosis for my two year old..we have the second evaluation on Friday. However this happened today Poo smearing 😩 He is so obsessed with his diaper and when he goes he tries to dig in.. This is new behavior and obviously stressful and he has no receptive language I can’t tell him no... I guess using onesies will be the only option but I don’t want him to continue I just can’t get him To understand that he shouldn’t do that...

I just found your video.My son is 2 years old and he only knows 7 words.But he doesn't talk around nobody but me and his daddy.But he love other kids.I want to know is he austim ??

At 2 they should have more 7 words. Now that doesn't mean he's autistic, some children are just speech delayed but I would bring up the concern to his doctor :)

My daughter was about a little over 2 1/2 yrs when she was diagnosed with Autism. I live in Ohio. Before,she was diagnosed,I knew for about 6 months,I just had a gut feeling. She has been speech for quite awhile. She now has started OT. The Dr. suggest OT,PT,SPEECH & ABA therapy. We have to switch my daughter’s insurance to do ABA therapy. She also has insomnia & sensory issues. They also want us to look into feeding therapy. Just a lot of stuff we need to do for our daughter❤️🧩

Did they put your child in regular class, and then transferred him to a sped class or another school to better accommodate his needs?

My son is 2 and a half and he is speech delayed and walks on his toes (occasionally). He’s. In speech therapy and they wanted to do O.T. due to him walking on his toes suggesting he is on the spectrum.

My eldest son is a shut down rather than a meltdown kid. If he weren’t as severely autistic as he is, that might have delayed his diagnosis. He is 26 years old now. Graduated with honors from high school (had a 1-1 aide his whole life) and has just made an incredibly yummy smelling bowl of popcorn and isn’t planning to share with his mamma. 😢
