The other glands she is referring to are called Parathyroid Glands, they are not normally removed because it does control calcium in your blood. The Surgeons don't even touch these glands, even if you have thyroid cancer unless any of them are producing too much calctonins. The procedure for a thyroidectomy, including for Graves disease, these parathyroid glands are left intact, or not removed.
@StephanieLarrissa3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Arthur! Exactly! My surgeon informed me that there was a possibility that the glands could get damaged during the procedure and so I would need to be on calcium if that had happened.

@@StephanieLarrissa your welcome Stephanie, the main thing to remember is the first Surgery is the most important. I'm 59 years old and a U.S. Army vet hoping to make it to 60 in December, as I will have to have thyroid surgery soon because of malignancy in my thyroid. It's important to find a good Endocrine Surgeon because the first thyroid surgery is going to give you the best outcome. In my case I have a cancerous nodule & 1 of my parathyroid glands are involved, maybe the one hopefully closet to that diseased nodule. I wish you the best!

what is said life expectancy?it is normal operation or major surgery?
@richelle83713 жыл бұрын
thank you for sharing, It's been 3 months since my total thyroidectomy, my concern is that I don't have my period since after the surgery is this even normal?
@StephanieLarrissa3 жыл бұрын
This is normal because of the hormonal massive change. Please keep up with your medication doses as this can be a major factor. Let your doctor know ASAP so that they can check your hormone levels and regulate it. Don’t panic this can happen and is a symptom of hypothyroidism which is what you will be after a total thyroidectomy. Again Please be proactive and talk to your doctor as it is still fresh!
