Albert was revived at the scene of the crash. He barely survived his car accident. He wasn't expected to move or breathe on his own again.
Nearly given up on, Albert found hope after meeting Ranken Jordan physician, Dr. Nick Holekamp. Albert's fate drastically changed that day. One of our physiatrists discovered that Albert's spinal cord injury was incomplete.
Now, instead of spending his life in a bed at a nursing home he's in therapy and launching his career as a motivational speaker.

It's amazing how one could receive such a debilitating injury and turn it into a plus and motivate people like he does.

My mom broke her neck at C2-C3. Was completely paralyzed from the neck down for months. Thank God she actually made a full recovery. The uncertainty of her injury during the time she was paralyzed was extremely stressful on the family, especially her. My mother loves her complete independence. She once told me that if she was ever got paralyzed from the neck down, that she would not want to live, and I don't blame her. I would feel the same way

It is important for anyone to get a second opinion about their medical care and this young man is probably glad his dad did for him.

My dad was in a motorbike accident two weeks ago. He's had his right leg amputated and is paralyzed (incomplete) below the neck. This was hard for me to watch but also inspiring and encouraging.

Well done Albert! It is his sheer determination that helped him pull through and the love of his family. One of my brothers has a C2 complete spinal cord injury for the past five years and he does not lie in bed just looking at the ceiling (but did for almost 2 years). Nowadays they put complete injury patients in physical therapies too and he has done 4 miles on an electric bike, i.e. one which moves the patients legs to keep the muscles in the body strong. He smiles like Albert! God bless them

This is a great story, and I'm happy for Albert's progress. But as a physical therapist and as a friend to a number of high quads, I have to object to the statement that a complete injury would have meant lying in bed staring at the ceiling for the rest of his life. There are many complete high quads who lead active, productive lives. It's irresponsible for a rehab center to make such a statement. It isn't necessary to diminish what others accomplish in order to highlight Albert's progress.

I’m a C5/6 incomplete for the past 12-years … I live a full life - I do it all on my own aside walk. Your body does the work in its own. I spent 5-months in a rehab centre but I believe I would have healed all the same given time - like 1-year

Happy to hear your mom is fully recovered. How long did it take before she re-gained movement? My brother broke his neck at c4. It's been 22 days and he has only gained back neck and shoulder movement dont know if thats slow or normal improvement. been here with him at the hospital for 22 days straight feeding and taking care of him the stress and sadness is unbearable sometimes. I just want him to get better and feel like there hope.

Sorry to hear about your bother. First off, everyone hopes he'll make a full recovery. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure 22 days is too soon to make an accurate assessment. My mom's prognosis was the worst. All the docs agreed she would be a quadraplegic for life based on the MRI's and cat scans. There were signs of improvement about a week after the accident. Little by little, she regained everything. There were no certainties along the way and she pushed herself real hard in rehab.

It took a good 4-5 months for her to recover fully. This accident ocurred about 12 years ago when she fell on her head from atop a roman bench. Even more astonishing, she broke her back in the lumbar region (not sure which vertebra) as well as her ribs and some internal organs in a horrific car wreck about 2 years ago and made about a 90-95% recovery from it. I think the most important factor in your brother's recovery is will. My mom has it, and if your brother has it, I think he'll make out ok
