For songs where Freddie knew he was dying, you have to go to their album, "Innuendo". Freddie worked his butt off to finish recording the songs and even did a video, but if you want to feel how all of us Queen fans felt (after the fact), listen to "The Show Must Go On", written by Brian May. I had the Innuendo CD playing in my car, and that song came on, after I knew he'd died. I had to pull over to the side of the road, because I was crying so hard, I couldn't see anymore. For context, I've been a hardcore Queen fan since I was twelve years old, in 1975. His death hit me very hard. I'm still not over it.

The reason for Live Aid was a a dreadful famine of biblical proportions in Ethiopia that was on the news every night . Bob Geldorf saw it and organised a Song and then this concert. Got knight for it. Many many artists were at the concert but Queen who were really not expected to be, were the highlight of this concert and this is the bit played over and over.

Can I also say, good on you for calling out those who claim to have 'never heard Queen before' and fake reaction videos. Your reactions to Radio Gaga, Hammer to Fall (the best rocking song ever about the theme of 'we're all going to die', by the way!) and 'Crazy little thing called love' were so clearly genuine. Just wanted to say, when you watch this again, note how Dr Sir Brian May PhD plays 3 different guitars in 'Crazy little thing'! And Roger Taylor's vocals are amazing! He doesn't get enough recognition for his role in Queen's Live Aid performance. When you watch 'Somebody to love' from Montreal 1981, you'll see Roger in all his glory! And the way Freddie simply worships at the greatness that are Brian's solos (especially in 'Hammer to Fall') show the humility of the man. He knew Brian was one of the greats. Finally, don't take the film version of Queen's history as the truth - it isn't. It's more a 'representation' of the group's history in film form. Keep going down that Queen rabbit hole, especially live. You won't be disappointed. (My brother saw them at Knebworth in 1986, but I couldn't go - bitter, me? Hell yes! I would have given my right arm to have seen Queen live!). I was 18 when Live Aid happened. I feel 18 again every time I watch this footage. RIP Freddie.

I was 15 when Live Aid was planned and I was determined to watch in all non stop and that's what I did 😂 Freddie had a throat infection and he performed against doctors orders saying 1.8 billion people around the world will be watching and Queen will be there darling. Freddie had 70,000 people and all the world in the palm of his hands especially during Hammer to Fall when he played the audience at home. He was the only artist to acknowledge the camera.. I was already a huge Queen fan and I watched they're performance with my Dad and him and many others became Queen fan Freddie at 70% is better than most at 100% . Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace out ✌️ ☮️

It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star. “Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.” “It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world” Their impact was summed up by Geldof. “Queen were absolutely the best band of the day,” the Live Aid organizer said. “They played the best, had the best sound, used their time to the full. They understood the idea exactly, that it was a global jukebox. They just went and smashed one hit after another. It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world.”

Something to remember was this was live in London and Philadelphia. 70K+ in London and 100K in Philly. The bands would switch back and forth locations so the stage can get reset. So the big screens at each venue were playing the performance of the other venue. Now imagine all that clapping and the call/response happening in front of Freddie and happening 3000 miles away at the exact same time.

Freddie Mercury was THE God Of Rock. Unrivaled voice and unrivaled master of the stage. This performance of 'Radio Ga Ga' is basically the only time you can actually SEE the speed of sound. Agree. I’m not really a huge U2 fan, but I won tickets for the Pop tour, and singing Pride with everyone in the audience was unexpectedly very moving for me. Of course, the best is on the 3 occasions I was able to sing along to PF Wish You Were Here, and Comfortably Numb with 27k people I n 88, nearly 50k in 94, and 17.5k in 24. Although I must say, on WYWH, I really feel the one heart, one mind with the crowd, but somehow on CN I feel like it is more like just me and the band, more like praising/thanking them for that song and what it has meant to me.

To answer your question. Freddie may have had in inkling that he wasn't well at this point but he didn't find out that he was HIV positive until 1987 (despite what the movie says, don't even get me started on that!). Also, Queen have always been a 4 piece band, it wasn't just Freddie then a band. They never officially split up but between 1982 and 1984 they had a little break and Freddie did indeed release a solo album, so did Roger. And again, despite what the movie says, Queen never "reformed" just for this gig. They had an album out the previous year, The Works, that had a full tour.

@@mightyV444Movies are dramatisations, they don’t have to stick to fact per se. Or rather, they don’t have to stick to the correct timeline. Which was the case with Bohemian Rhapsody; it stuck for the most part, to fact, but re-jigged the timeline of events to fit the story they were telling. Only documentaries “have” to stick to fact. It’s just a shame that a lot of folks don’t often make the distinction between the two mediums

Freddie hadn't even been diagnosed as HIV+ yet at this time. That he knew he was sick is what was said in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie but that was done for the sake of keeping the movie going and creating empathy for the audience. The movie is cramming 20 years into 2 hours so the time line really suffered in the movie. It was not a documentary so things like timeline really weren't all that important. Great concert, Freddie had the audience eating out of his hand from the very start. Live Aid was aid for famine in Ethiopia. Queen never split off until Freddie died. They did take a little time off because they were burnt out from constantly touring and producing albums year after year with no time off. The band had actually done some touring earlier in this same year so they were not broken up. Queen songs you probably haven't heard that are great I would suggest March Of The Black Queen (studio version), White Queen, live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975, You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park, Somebody To Love live at Montreal 1981 and Innuendo (studio version) for starters. There is so much great Queen music. There are over 200 songs in the Queen catalog and then there are all the live performances so buckle up! Thank you for your reaction.

HIV wasn’t well-known at the time of Live Aid - my oldest brother died of it around 18 months after this, and it was only at that time that the UK government was doing a public information campaign about this, the “iceberg” tv ad, the “AIDS - Don’t Die of Ignorance” leaflet delivered to every house in the country, etc.
