Louise Aigrain is a senior staff scientist, working in DNA Pipelines Research and Development group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. In this film she outline all the process involved in sequencing a DNA sample, from receiving a prepared sample to releasing the assembled data to the scientists. She discusses how to working safely and efficiently in the lab as well as how to track samples and carry out quality control checks.
The R & D group develop new and improved methods to sequence DNA samples using a range of different technologies at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
This is one of a series of Life in the lab films providing a more in-depth insight to some of the laboratory processes used by different teams at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The film has been developed to help support the OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 in laboratory skills.

When I first learnt about genetics, I fell in love. Knowing that there's so much to the process tha what I read in my textbooks really is mind blowing.

5tony, she isnt creating life quite yet. She is replicating blocks of coded data that exist in the form of DNA molecules. The code instruction set must be executed by cellular machinery to decode, animate and make it become what we recognize as life. This lab is merely copying and pasting blocks of software code, duplicating it sufficiently so extremely sensitive cameras can detect the glowing phosphors to read the code from a macro point of view; as we lack the technology that a cell has to read it directly. We know for a fact that computer software does not spontaneously exist or create itself and I will end the topic discussion at that. Interesting analogy. DNA stores data as 1 of 4 values each memory location. NAND FLASH memory in our phones and computers also store data as 1 of 4 values (two binary bits) each memory location. Completely different computing systems, yet data is 1 of 4 per memory location.
